Agentic payments are transactions that an AI agent initiates or completes after you delegate a shopping or payment goal. The agent can search, compare products or services, build a cart, ask for approval (or follow rules you set), and submit payment with a scoped token or other controlled credential. It does not need to receive your raw card number.
In a typical flow, you say what you want, the agent evaluates available options, shows you the proposed purchase, and then completes checkout after an authorization record and payment credential pass the required checks. Whether a person must approve every purchase depends on the rules, value, merchant, payment network and risk signals.
What makes a payment “agentic”?
A conventional online purchase requires you to search, choose, enter payment details and confirm. An agentic payment delegates some or all of those decisions to software that can act across websites or payment APIs. You provide an intent such as “find a laptop below my budget with delivery this week” or “rebook my flight if the price stays below a set limit.” The agent interprets that intent, gathers options and executes the permitted transaction.
The important distinction is delegated authority. A chatbot that only recommends a product is not making an agentic payment. An agent that can submit an order or authorize a charge is acting on your behalf, so the system needs evidence of what you authorized, a way to constrain the payment and a way to identify the agent and merchant.

How an AI agent completes a purchase
The following sequence describes the controls used by emerging agent-payment systems. A merchant may support only some of these steps, so the exact user interface varies.
- You state an intent. You give the agent a goal, constraints and, where relevant, a spending ceiling, delivery requirement, refund preference or list of acceptable brands. A useful intent is specific enough for the agent to distinguish an acceptable purchase from a merely similar one.
- The agent discovers and compares options. It queries merchant catalogs, product feeds or web pages and compares price, availability, shipping, taxes and stated policies. It can narrow results according to your instructions instead of presenting an unfiltered search page.
- The system records your authorization. Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) separates an initial request from approval of a specific cart. An Intent Mandate records the request. After the agent presents a cart, your approval creates a Cart Mandate containing the exact items and price. Google describes these mandates as “tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital contracts that serve as verifiable proof of a user’s instructions.”
- A provider provisions a controlled credential. Rather than handing the agent your card number, the payment provider can issue a token scoped to the customer, merchant, transaction or stated intent. Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens are designed so an agent can initiate payment with permission while the underlying payment credentials remain hidden. Network tokens can be limited to the relevant customer intent.
- The agent and merchant are checked. Mastercard’s Agent Pay framework registers and verifies agents and uses dynamic agentic tokens plus Web Bot Auth so merchants and their delivery networks can distinguish approved agents from malicious automation. Visa’s approach uses cryptographic signatures to carry agent intent, consumer recognition and payment information.
- Checkout is submitted and authorized. The agent can send the token through a normal checkout form or an agent-compatible application programming interface. The provider or network verifies the token, signatures and authorization data, then requests approval from the issuer. The merchant returns an order confirmation and fulfillment details to the agent.
- Exceptions trigger human control. A high-value, unusual or ambiguous purchase can require another confirmation. Visa describes passkeys as a way to authenticate token creation and request confirmation when a transaction needs a double-check. A decline, changed price, unavailable item or policy conflict should stop the agent rather than silently substituting a different purchase.
How the agent pays without seeing your card number
Tokenization is the central protection. A token is a substitute credential that a payment provider or network can validate without revealing the underlying account number to the agent. The useful security property is not simply that the token is different; it is that its permissions can be narrower than the original payment method.
- Scope: A token may be restricted by merchant, amount, currency, transaction type or the intent and cart that produced it.
- Lifetime: A one-time or short-lived token limits the damage if an agent session is compromised. The exact expiry rules depend on the provider and are not universal.
- Revocation: The issuer or provider can reject a token without replacing your physical card when an agent, merchant or session becomes untrusted.
- Context: Signed intent, cart details, consumer recognition and agent identity can travel with the authorization request, allowing risk systems to compare the charge with what you actually approved.
Tokenization does not make an agent automatically safe. A token issued for an overly broad instruction can still authorize the wrong purchase, and a compromised agent may try to manipulate the data it presents. The authorization record and limits are therefore as important as the hidden card number.

Do you still have to approve each purchase?
Not necessarily. You can choose a fully interactive workflow in which the agent must show the final cart and wait for approval. You might instead authorize a bounded rule, such as buying a replacement consumable below a specified amount from an approved merchant. The system should still expose the item, price, fees and delivery terms before execution when those details could materially change the decision.
Step-up confirmation is appropriate when the transaction is expensive, unusual, outside the normal merchant set or inconsistent with the original intent. A passkey or another device-bound method can confirm that the real account holder approved token creation or the final charge. A service that offers no understandable approval history, spending limits or cancellation path is not giving you meaningful delegated control.
How the major approaches differ
These initiatives solve overlapping parts of the problem rather than representing one universal standard. AP2 is an open, payment-agnostic protocol; network frameworks focus on trust and acceptance within payment ecosystems; a provider token is a building block that can be used by an agent.

| Approach | Primary focus | Authorization and identity | Credential handling | Coverage or integration detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AP2 | Signed intent and cart mandates, verifiable credentials, authorization, authenticity and accountability. | Cryptographically signed mandates provide evidence of the user’s instructions. | Payment-method agnostic; a separate provider supplies the payment credential. | Google announced development with more than 60 organizations; universal merchant coverage is not established. |
| Mastercard Agent Pay | Agent registration, dynamic agentic tokens, purchase-intent data and Web Bot Auth at the content-delivery layer. | Registered and verified agents can be distinguished from untrusted automation. | Dynamic tokens are used instead of exposing the underlying payment credential. | Trusted agents can use standard checkout forms, but participation by every merchant is not guaranteed. |
| Visa Trusted Agent Protocol and Intelligent Commerce | Cryptographic communication of agent intent, consumer recognition and payment information. | Signed data links the agent, consumer and transaction context. | Works with Visa’s token and authentication controls; exact product availability depends on the participating ecosystem. | Visa Payment Passkeys add biometric or device-bound step-up confirmation. |
| Stripe Shared Payment Tokens | A provider-level primitive for agent-initiated payments. | Permission is represented in the token and the associated payment flow. | The agent uses a shared token while the preferred payment method remains hidden; Stripe says support is expanding to Mastercard, Visa, Affirm and Klarna tokens. | Availability depends on the merchant, provider and supported payment method; no universal cross-merchant guarantee is stated. |
Can an agent shop at any merchant?
No. An agent may be able to read a public product page, but completing payment requires a compatible checkout, an accepted token or a supported API, and fraud controls that recognize the transaction. Some systems are designed to work through existing checkout forms; others require a merchant-side integration.
Compatibility also varies by payment method, country, currency, recurring-billing rules, age or identity checks, shipping restrictions and refund process. A merchant that accepts ordinary card payments is not automatically prepared to accept an agent’s signed mandate or token. Until broader interoperability exists, an agent should clearly identify when it is using a fallback flow, such as asking you to complete the final checkout yourself.

Delegating a purchase combines payment risk with software and data risk. The main failure modes are:

- Over-broad authorization: A vague instruction can be interpreted as permission to buy an item, quantity or subscription you did not intend.
- Prompt or tool manipulation: A malicious page, product feed or connected tool may try to change the agent’s instructions, redirect payment or hide fees.
- Impersonated agents: A criminal automation system may pose as a trusted agent to obtain a credential or make merchants treat hostile traffic as legitimate.
- Stale or incorrect information: Price, inventory, shipping dates and return policies can change between discovery and authorization.
- Privacy leakage: Shopping history, address data and preferences may pass through the agent, merchant and payment provider. Minimize the data shared and understand retention and access controls.
- Fraud and disputes: If the agent followed a flawed rule, responsibility among the user, agent operator, merchant, provider and issuer may be unclear. Keep the mandate, cart, confirmation and receipt so a dispute has an audit trail.
- Automation lockout: A merchant may block bots or require a human challenge, making the transaction fail even when the payment method is valid.
AP2 explicitly treats authorization, authenticity and accountability as shared protocol problems. Agent identity, intent data, token controls and step-up authentication reduce exposure, but they do not eliminate the need for review in every situation.
A safer way to use agentic shopping as a consumer
- Start with narrow permissions. Set a maximum amount, permitted merchants or categories, quantity limits and an expiration time for the instruction.
- Require a final cart review. Check the exact product, seller, taxes, shipping, subscription terms and return policy before allowing payment.
- Use a dedicated token or virtual payment credential. Prefer a credential that can be limited or revoked independently of your primary card.
- Enable strong step-up authentication. A passkey or device-bound confirmation is appropriate for token creation and high-value or unusual purchases.
- Keep notifications and records. Save the mandate, cart, authorization result, order number and receipt. Configure alerts for token creation, authorization and settlement.
- Revoke quickly when something looks wrong. Disable the agent session or token, contact the issuer and merchant, and preserve the relevant logs rather than continuing the conversation with a compromised agent.
What product and payment teams should evaluate
A retailer or platform deciding whether to support agentic checkout should assess more than API connectivity. The following questions expose the operational trade-offs:
- Authorization evidence: Can you verify the signed intent and exact cart, and can you show what the customer approved?
- Agent identity: How are agents registered, authenticated, rotated and revoked? Can your edge or bot-management layer distinguish a trusted agent from impersonation?
- Token policy: What are the amount, merchant, currency, expiry and reuse limits? Can a token be invalidated without replacing the customer’s account?
- Human approval triggers: Which values, categories, policy changes or risk scores force confirmation?
- Merchant integration effort: Can the system use your existing checkout form, or must you implement an agent-specific API and mandate validation?
- Payment and geographic coverage: Which networks, wallets, currencies and countries are supported today? Do not assume a protocol announcement means production access everywhere.
- Privacy and data minimization: What customer data does the agent receive, where is it stored and who can use it for model training or analytics?
- Disputes and accountability: Which party handles an unauthorized or incorrectly interpreted purchase, and what immutable records can each party inspect?
- Interoperability: How does the payment flow connect with agent communication standards such as MCP or A2A, and what happens when another protocol is absent?
Why agentic payments are gaining attention
Visa reported a 4,700% surge in AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail sites, citing Adobe Data Insights from August 2025. In the same Visa account, 85% of shoppers who had used AI to shop said it improved their shopping experience. Those figures measure traffic and reported experience, not completed agent-authorized transactions, but they indicate why merchants and networks are preparing for software-mediated shopping.

Stripe’s guide, accessed in 2026, says 78% of the Forbes AI 50 use Stripe and that more than 700 AI-agent startups launched on Stripe in 2024. These are ecosystem signals rather than a guarantee that any particular agent can pay at any particular store. The commercial opportunity is concentrated in payment infrastructure: token issuance, mandate verification, agent registration, risk scoring, authentication and dispute evidence.
What remains unresolved
The technology can document intent and hide primary credentials, but it cannot decide who should bear the loss when an agent misunderstood a request or a merchant supplied deceptive data. Cross-merchant coverage, payment-method support and geographic availability remain uneven. Rules for subscriptions, refunds, chargebacks and taxation also need to work when no person typed the final checkout fields.
For now, the practical definition is simple: an agentic payment is a purchase made by software under delegated, auditable authority. The safest deployments combine narrow instructions, signed intent, scoped tokens, verified agent identity and human confirmation at meaningful risk boundaries.
