Google says the glasses will come in audio and display versions and can help with directions, calls, messages, translation, photos, music and other tasks. Its announcements do not establish that the glasses work without a phone, network access or companion apps.
What Android XR smart glasses are meant to do
Google describes the glasses as a hands-free way to ask Gemini about what you see and use phone-connected features. The examples below come from Google’s announcements and demonstrations, not independent tests or a guarantee that every capability will ship in every model or market. The May 2025 demonstration was of a prototype; Google’s May 2026 announcement is its later feature and launch description. Google’s 2025 prototype demonstration · Google’s May 2026 announcement
Ask about what is in view
Google says Gemini can respond to questions about objects and surroundings the wearer is looking at. Its examples include finding restaurant reviews, identifying a cloud formation and interpreting a parking sign. The idea is to ask in the moment rather than take out the phone and search manually.
Get directions
The announced experience includes turn-by-turn directions that take account of the wearer’s position and facing direction. Google also describes asking to add a stop or find nearby restaurants. Display glasses can put information in the wearer’s view; the 2025 prototype demonstration showed heads-up directions.

Smart Re-Centering snaps your view back instantly.
- 【BIGGEST: THE ULTIMATE IMMERSIVE GIANT — 174″ Screen, 58° FOV, 1200p】The largest virtual display in consumer XR. Period. Every frame is edge-to-edge sharp, silky-smooth, and jaw-droppingly vivid. It's like strapping an IMAX to your face.

- 【BOLDEST: NEXT-LEVEL CLARITY & AUDIO — 1250 Nits + HARMAN AudioEFX】1250 nits of peak brightness — over 2× brighter than the competition — means you can actually see your screen outdoors, in sunlight, no squinting required. Pair that with HARMAN AudioEFX: deeper bass, wider soundstage, and crystal-clear highs tuned by the world's leading audio engineers. Other XR glasses make you choose between picture and sound. The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.
Handle calls and messages
Google says wearers can manage calls, send texts and ask for summaries of missed messages without reaching for the phone. These are hands-free interactions; they do not show that the glasses can connect or perform these tasks independently of a paired phone.
Listen to audio
Audio glasses use speakers for spoken help, calls and music, according to Google’s descriptions. They are the screen-free option in the announced family.
Take photos and videos
Google says the glasses can capture photos and video. Its announcement also describes asking Gemini to edit a photo with Nano Banana. Specific camera specifications and the final feature set for each model have not been stated.

Use apps and carry out multi-step tasks
Google says wearers can invoke phone apps by voice, naming Uber and Mondly. It also describes a Gemini task that prepares a DoorDash coffee order while the phone remains in a pocket, with the wearer giving the final order confirmation. That example shows how the glasses may reduce phone handling, not that the phone is unnecessary.
What still requires a phone?
The clearest current description is that Android XR glasses pair with Android and iOS phones and can access phone apps by voice. Google said in May 2025 that the glasses work “in tandem with your phone”; in May 2026 it specified Android and iOS pairing and access to phone apps. In practical terms, Google presents them as a hands-free interface to a phone, rather than as a replacement for one. Google’s May 2026 announcement

Google’s phrases “without reaching for your phone” and “while your phone stays in your pocket” describe not handling the phone during an action. They do not establish phone-free operation. The announcements do not specify whether pairing is required for every feature, whether the glasses can operate independently, whether a network connection is needed, which tasks run locally, or what works offline. Companion-app setup requirements are also not detailed.
Google’s December 2024 platform vision described glasses working seamlessly with a user’s other Android devices and envisioned directions, translations and message summaries without reaching for a phone. The later descriptions are more specific and include iOS pairing; the 2024 vision should not be read as the current compatibility statement. Google’s 2024 Android XR vision
Audio glasses versus display glasses
Google’s May 2026 announcement identifies two kinds of eyewear. The distinction is whether information is delivered through audio alone or also shown in the wearer’s view; final model-by-model specifications and prices were not included.
