An AI-driven stock sell-off would hurt portfolios in proportion to their exposure, concentration and need for near-term cash. The first losses would likely appear in individual AI companies and technology-heavy funds, but a decline could spread to broad U.S. indexes: Vanguard reports that technology accounted for nearly 40% of the S&P 500 in 2026. A diversified portfolio can still fall, yet holdings such as value stocks, non-U.S. equities and high-quality bonds may reduce the damage. The right response is to compare your actual allocation with your plan, protect withdrawals you will need soon and rebalance deliberately—not to make an all-at-once decision based on a frightening headline.
What an AI stock sell-off would mean for your investments
A sell-off is a rapid, broad decline in prices as investors reduce positions. In an AI disappointment, the trigger could be slower revenue growth, weaker corporate spending, disappointing product results, tighter financing conditions or evidence that expected profits will take longer to arrive. Prices can fall before the underlying businesses change because investors are repricing future earnings.
The immediate effect depends on what you own. A portfolio containing one or two AI companies could lose a large percentage quickly. A broad-market index fund would spread the loss across hundreds of companies, but it would not be insulated: technology represented nearly 40% of the S&P 500 in Vanguard’s 2026 analysis. That concentration means a large technology decline can pull down an apparently diversified U.S. fund.
Diversification changes the path and size of losses; it does not guarantee a positive return. Value-oriented shares, companies outside the United States and high-quality bonds have different economic and valuation drivers. Vanguard says those assets may be more resilient if enthusiasm for AI weakens, and that the diversification benefit of bonds may be unusually strong. Bonds can still lose value, particularly when interest rates rise or credit quality deteriorates.

Why valuations make an AI disappointment consequential
Vanguard placed U.S. large-cap stocks near the 95th percentile of their historical relative valuation range in 2026. When prices already assume strong growth, even a profitable company can fall if its future results do not justify those expectations. The risk is not limited to companies that sell AI hardware or software; suppliers, cloud providers and other large technology firms can be repriced together when investors reduce exposure to the theme.
Vanguard’s 2026 outlook estimated a 25% to 30% probability of an AI-disappointment, lower-growth scenario. That is an estimate of a possible state of the economy and markets, not a timing signal or a prediction that a crash will occur. Market outcomes can be milder, more severe or unrelated to AI.
Stress scenarios are not forecasts
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta modeled S&P 500 declines of 25%, 35% and 50% to study potential effects on household consumption. These figures are analytical stress cases, not forecasts of an AI crash. They are useful for asking whether your plan would survive a large decline, not for deciding that one of those exact losses is coming.

Use a scenario test for each account:
- Estimate the balance after a 25%, 35% or 50% equity decline.
- Subtract cash and high-quality bonds that are available for near-term spending.
- Identify which expenses would still require selling shares.
- Check whether the resulting withdrawal rate remains workable under your written plan.
A scenario that exposes a cash shortfall calls for planning, not an emergency market bet.
Find your actual AI and technology exposure
Before selling anything, inventory every account and holding. Record the fund name, number of shares, current value, asset class and percentage of the total portfolio. Then look through fund holdings for overlapping technology companies. Owning several funds does not necessarily diversify you if they all hold the same large firms.
Direct exposure
Individual AI companies, semiconductor manufacturers, cloud platforms and specialized software create direct company and sector risk. Compare each position with your investment policy. Fidelity says that holding 5% or more of a single stock can increase portfolio risk. That is a risk signal, not an automatic sell instruction: a written plan, tax cost and your time horizon still matter.

Indirect exposure
Broad U.S. funds, growth funds and technology-sector funds can contain many of the same large companies. Calculate the combined weight, not just the percentage shown for each fund separately. Your brokerage’s holdings view, fund fact sheets and annual reports can help reveal overlap.

Account-level exposure
Keep a separate total for taxable accounts, a 401(k), an IRA and other plans. A target allocation may be correct across all accounts while one account is dangerously concentrated. Also note which funds are actually available in a workplace plan; you may need to rebalance with contributions rather than sales.
Compare the portfolio with your written allocation
Write down your target mix of stocks and bonds, and the intended split between U.S. and international shares. Compare current percentages with those targets. A position that grew because of market gains may now exceed its planned range even though you never chose to increase risk.

Use a rebalancing rule stated in advance—for example, a calendar review or a permitted percentage band—rather than a headline-driven threshold. If the portfolio is outside the rule, rebalance toward the target. If it is inside the rule, changing it solely because of an AI narrative is a market-timing decision.
Choose a response that fits your time horizon
Decades before retirement
Younger savers with stable income and a long investment horizon generally have more time for markets to recover. That does not justify ignoring concentration. Correcting an oversized single stock or technology allocation can reduce the chance that one theme dominates your future savings. Regular contributions can be directed to underweight assets, gradually restoring the target without one large trade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWithin a few years of retirement
Fidelity advises investors approaching retirement to reduce avoidable volatility and preserve savings needed for income. Map essential withdrawals by year and hold an appropriate reserve in cash or high-quality, short-duration bonds so a market decline does not force immediate equity sales. The reserve should be sized from your spending plan, not from a universal stock/bond formula; no source supports one percentage for every household.

Already withdrawing
If you are taking distributions, identify which assets fund the next several years of spending. Selling depressed shares to meet a fixed withdrawal can lock in losses and create sequence-of-returns risk. A diversified reserve gives you flexibility to let equity holdings recover, but it cannot eliminate the risk of a prolonged downturn. Revisit the plan when income, spending, tax rates or health needs change.

Taxable brokerage accounts
Sales can realize capital gains or losses. Before trading, note the purchase dates, cost basis, holding periods and any tax-loss harvesting rules that apply to you. A tax bill can offset the intended risk reduction, while an unrealized loss may be useful only if it fits a broader tax plan. Consider the effect on your filing and consult a qualified tax professional for personal advice.
401(k) and similar workplace plans
Plan menus differ. You may be able to exchange funds, redirect new contributions or use a target-date option, but some plans restrict trading frequency or impose fees. Keep the account’s role coordinated with your other accounts; moving everything to the most conservative option can create a new inflation and longevity risk.
Traditional and Roth IRAs
IRAs usually offer broader investment choices, but withdrawals and conversions have different tax rules. A Roth IRA’s tax treatment does not make an unsuitable investment allocation safe. Base changes on the portfolio’s role, withdrawal schedule and estate objectives rather than on the account label alone.
Ways to reduce concentration without making a panic move
| Approach | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Rebalance to target | Sell or exchange overweight assets and buy underweight assets according to your written allocation. | May realize taxes in a taxable account and can feel uncomfortable if the concentrated asset keeps rising. |
| Redirect contributions | Send new savings to value, international or bond holdings until percentages move toward target. | Works slowly and may not correct a very large position soon. |
| Stage the change | Use several scheduled trades or contribution changes instead of one transaction. Vanguard says flow-based tilting can reduce the emotional and market-timing challenge of a one-time shift. | Prices may move against you while the transition is incomplete. |
| Build a withdrawal reserve | Hold planned near-term spending in cash or high-quality bonds, reducing forced equity sales. | Cash and bonds may earn less than stocks over long periods and can lose purchasing power to inflation. |
| Trim an individual stock | Reduce a position that exceeds your policy limit, such as Fidelity’s 5%-or-more risk signal. | Creates taxes or trading costs and does not predict the stock’s next move. |
What not to do during an AI sell-off
- Do not treat a modeled 25%, 35% or 50% decline as a promised market forecast.
- Do not assume a broad index fund has no AI exposure; technology’s nearly 40% S&P 500 weight makes concentration relevant.
- Do not sell every stock and wait for a perfect re-entry point. Missing a recovery can permanently damage a long-term plan.
- Do not use a 5% single-stock guideline as an automatic sell trigger.
- Do not assume bonds will always rise when equities fall; interest-rate and credit risks still apply.
- Do not change a retirement allocation without checking required withdrawals, taxes and the account’s available investments.
A practical decision process
- Pause and document. Save the headline or event that prompted concern, but make no trade until you can state the specific risk you are addressing.
- Inventory holdings. List every account, fund, individual stock, current value and overlapping technology exposure.
- Measure concentration. Calculate single-stock and combined technology weights; flag positions at or above 5% for deliberate review, not automatic liquidation.
- Check the plan. Compare the current stock/bond and U.S./international mix with your written targets and rebalancing bands.
- Map cash needs. Separate short-term spending and retirement withdrawals from money that can remain invested for many years.
- Select the least disruptive correction. Consider contribution redirection, staged trades or tax-aware rebalancing before an all-at-once change.
- Record the decision. Note the target, date, tax assumptions and next review date so the next headline does not restart the process.
When professional advice is warranted
Consider a fiduciary financial adviser and tax professional when a single holding represents a large share of your wealth, you are within several years of retirement, withdrawals are already under way, a sale would create substantial gains, or several account types must be coordinated. Ask for a written allocation, withdrawal reserve and rebalancing policy. Advice should reflect your income, taxes, insurance, debt, health and other assets; a generic market call cannot do that.
Bottom line for 401(k)s, IRAs and taxable portfolios
An AI sell-off could lower both concentrated technology holdings and broad U.S. funds, but the effect on your retirement depends on exposure and whether you must sell while prices are down. Long-horizon savers can focus on correcting accidental concentration and maintaining diversified contributions. Near-retirees and current retirees should prioritize a sustainable withdrawal reserve and an allocation that limits forced selling. Use Vanguard’s valuation and diversification observations, Fidelity’s strategy-over-emotion guidance and the Atlanta Fed’s stress cases as planning inputs—not as reasons to abandon a written plan in panic.
