An AI mindset coach can help you sort through thoughts, brainstorm options, or practise a skill you have already discussed with a professional. Treat it as an optional aid for low-stakes reflection—not as a therapist, a dependable source of diagnosis or treatment, or your only emotional support. If symptoms persist, worsen, disrupt daily life, or involve immediate risk, seek help from a person.
What an AI mindset coach may help with
A chatbot can offer prompts that help you put a concern into words, consider possible next steps, or reflect on a situation. The American Psychological Association (APA) describes organizing thoughts, generating ideas and prompting reflection as possible uses. It may also be useful for practising a skill you have already learned in professional care, as a supplement rather than a replacement for that care. APA’s health advisory and its consumer guide distinguish these limited uses from relying on AI to relieve symptoms on its own.
For example, you might ask a chatbot to help turn a vague worry into questions to discuss with a therapist, or to rehearse a conversation. Treat the result as a starting point to consider, not an expert assessment or a personalized care plan.
What it cannot reliably do
Diagnose or make dependable clinical judgments
AI is not a reliable way to diagnose mental or medical conditions. A response can sound certain and still be wrong. The chatbot may not know relevant personal history, circumstances, or nonverbal cues, and it cannot reliably evaluate your situation as a qualified professional can. Do not use an answer to label yourself, rule out a condition, or decide to start, stop, or change treatment. APA states that “AI is not a safe or effective replacement for care from a licensed mental health professional.”

Replace therapy or human connection
A chatbot is not a licensed professional, friend, or romantic partner. APA advises against making it your main source of emotional support. Pay attention if chatting begins to displace time with people, sleep, work, hobbies, or social interaction. A tool that feels understanding can still lack the context, responsibility, and reciprocal human relationship involved in professional care or personal support.
Guarantee safe or beneficial responses
Tools differ in purpose and design, and responses can be inaccurate or harmful. Evidence about some purpose-built mental-health technologies in particular settings should not be generalized to general-purpose chatbots. APA says research on general-purpose chatbot use does not yet support strong conclusions. A reassuring exchange may feel helpful in the moment, but it does not establish that a problem has improved or been treated.

Is it safe to tell an AI chatbot about your mental health?
Do not assume that sensitive information will remain private. Before sharing, check the service’s current privacy terms and settings: what it collects, how long it retains conversations, whether it shares information, and whether chats may be used to improve or train its systems. Avoid entering details you would not want handled under those terms. The APA cautions that AI tools may retain or share personal and health-related information; an interaction that feels personal can also encourage you to disclose more than you intended.
When to talk to a therapist or another professional
Contact a qualified mental-health professional when concerns persist, get worse, or make everyday responsibilities difficult; when you need diagnosis or treatment; or when AI use leaves you more distressed or confused, or starts to foster dependency or isolation. APA recommends consulting a licensed provider when possible. If you already have a care team, tell them how you are using AI so they can help you judge whether it is supporting or interfering with your care.
When to seek immediate human help
Do not rely on AI in a crisis. Seek immediate live human help if you are thinking of harming yourself or someone else, have urges to self-harm, hear or see things other people do not, or hold strong distressing beliefs that others do not share. These are reasons to reach a person now, not to wait for a chatbot to assess the situation.
- In the United States: Call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department, as advised by the APA consumer guide.
- Outside the United States: Contact your local emergency services or a local crisis service.
If you can, involve a trusted person who can stay with you or help you reach support.

How to assess an AI coaching tool
A product’s name does not establish that it has been clinically validated, is appropriate for your needs, or is regulated as a medical device. Compare the tool’s actual function and safeguards—not just its label.
- Purpose: Does it describe itself as wellness support, coaching, or clinical treatment? What does it actually claim to do?
- Evidence: Is there evidence for this specific use and the population it is intended for, rather than a broad claim about AI?
- Clinical involvement: Is a qualified clinician involved in the design or care pathway, and what role do they have?
- Crisis boundaries: Does it clearly explain its limits and direct people at risk to live human support?
- Privacy: What information does it collect, retain, share, or use for training or improvement?
- Effect on your life: Does using it support your relationships and professional care, or crowd them out?
Regulatory status depends on what software does and how it is intended to be used. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Digital Health Policy Navigator distinguishes, among other functions, software that supplements professional care with coaching but no specific treatment suggestions from software that performs patient-specific analysis or gives directives for diagnosis or treatment. The agency says its oversight focus is on software functions that are medical devices and could pose a safety risk if they do not work as intended. This function-specific guidance is not a blanket approval or rejection of mental-health apps; a product name alone cannot tell you its regulatory status.
