Nested virtualization passes those virtualization functions through to a guest VM, allowing software inside that guest to run its own hypervisor or virtual machines. You only need the nested setting when the guest workload itself needs virtualization access.
What AMD-V does for VirtualBox
AMD-V is a feature of the host processor, not a VirtualBox product or a guest operating system. Intel’s corresponding technology is VT-x. VirtualBox uses these processor features to run guest code while retaining control over operations that could affect the host. Oracle’s Technical Background says hardware virtualization may need to be enabled in the computer’s firmware before VirtualBox can use it. It also documents hardware virtualization as required for 64-bit guests and multiprocessing support.
That is ordinary hardware virtualization: the host’s processor assists VirtualBox in running a guest. It does not, by itself, mean that the guest can run another VM.
What nested virtualization adds
Nested virtualization passes hardware virtualization functions from the host through VirtualBox to a guest. The arrangement is host → guest → nested guest: VirtualBox runs the first VM, and a hypervisor inside that VM can then run another VM. This is useful when the guest workload is itself a hypervisor, a virtualization lab, or software that requires access to virtualization extensions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.0 Beta 2 User Manual describes the control as “Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V” and says it enables passthrough of hardware virtualization functions to the guest VM. The manual locates the option under the VM’s Settings → System → Processor → Acceleration section.
When to enable it
- Enable nested virtualization for a particular VM when software running inside that guest needs to use AMD-V or VT-x—for example, to start another VM or run a hypervisor.
- Leave it off for a guest that only runs ordinary applications and does not need to host virtual machines. It is not a universal speed setting; VirtualBox’s manual says its defaults generally work well.
Nested paging is a different feature
Nested paging is a hardware-assisted memory-address translation mechanism. It helps translate guest memory addresses and can reduce work the hypervisor would otherwise perform. It is distinct from passing virtualization functions into the guest: nested paging concerns memory translation, while nested virtualization enables the guest to run virtualization software.

VirtualBox lists the controls separately: Enable Nested Paging and Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V. Similar names do not make them interchangeable. Enable nested virtualization only when a guest workload needs virtualization access; do not turn on nested paging as a substitute for it.
What affects whether it works
There is no blanket compatibility promise for every processor, host, VirtualBox release, and guest setup. Nested virtualization depends on the host CPU and firmware exposing hardware virtualization, the host operating system or hypervisor, VirtualBox version and configuration, and the guest workload and its configuration.

Version and architecture matter. The VirtualBox 6.1 changelog records nested hardware virtualization support on Intel CPUs beginning with 5th-generation Core i processors and notes testing with a guest running VirtualBox. That is a historical, Intel-specific release note—not a current guarantee for all Intel systems, and not evidence about AMD processors. The VirtualBox project describes the product as general-purpose full virtualization software for x86_64 hardware; it notes macOS/Arm support beginning with version 7.1. That does not establish that x86 AMD-V guidance or this nested setting applies to every Arm configuration. Check the VirtualBox changelog and the manual for the release and architecture you use.
Troubleshoot a guest that cannot run another VM
Check the layers in order. This is a practical diagnostic sequence based on VirtualBox’s documented firmware dependency and per-VM passthrough control, not a tested procedure or a guarantee of resolution.

- Check the host processor and firmware. Confirm that the CPU supports hardware virtualization and that it is enabled in the computer’s firmware settings. Firmware menus and labels vary by manufacturer.
- Check the host virtualization environment. The host operating system or another hypervisor can affect what virtualization functions VirtualBox can use. Consult documentation for your host and its active virtualization configuration.
- Check VirtualBox version and architecture. Confirm that the installed release and host architecture support the configuration you are attempting; do not infer AMD support from the historical Intel-only 6.1 changelog note.
- Check the affected VM’s setting. Open Settings → System → Processor → Acceleration for that VM and verify whether Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V is available and enabled. This is a per-VM passthrough control.
- Confirm the guest workload’s requirement. The software inside the guest must be able to use virtualization functions and be configured to run its hypervisor or nested VM.
Do you need the VirtualBox Extension Pack?
The Extension Pack is a separately licensed package, but the cited VirtualBox documentation does not say it is required for AMD-V or nested virtualization. Do not treat it as a prerequisite for enabling the nested-virtualization setting.
