Reviews find positive average results for several outcomes, alongside a non-significant metacognition result in one major meta-analysis. Whether AI helps depends on how students use it, what the course is trying to teach, and whether learning is measured as immediate performance or independent understanding. Evidence about faculty trust is more limited: one university survey found broadly similar student and faculty attitudes, but it cannot establish what faculty nationwide think about students’ AI use.
Does AI help students learn?
On average, some studies find that it can. A 2025 meta-analysis by Shuzhen Chen and Alan C. K. Cheung synthesized 57 studies and 97 effect estimates on university students. It reported a positive pooled effect for learning outcomes overall, but results varied by outcome and study. These are averages across different interventions and measures—not a prediction that a particular student, class, or AI workflow will improve.
The reported standardized effects help show that the review did not find the same pattern for every kind of learning:

A separate 2025 meta-analysis by Ruiqi Deng and colleagues, focused on experimental ChatGPT studies, also reported improvements in academic performance and affective-motivational states. Its authors called for longer-term research and stronger objective measurement. Short-term improvements should not be treated as proof that learning persists after AI is removed or transfers to a new task.

Why can the same AI tool help one task and undermine another?
“Using AI” covers very different activities: asking for an explanation, translating a passage, revising a draft, generating a complete answer, checking reasoning, or planning study sessions. These uses place different demands on the student. An answer that is polished or factually plausible can help complete an assignment without demonstrating that the student can explain, reproduce, or apply the material independently.
A 2026 systematic review by Qin An, Joyce Hwee Ling Koh, and Qian Liu examined 39 peer-reviewed empirical articles on student use and learning outcomes in higher education. It categorized use as creator, translator, refiner, navigator, evaluator, dialoguer, and self-regulatory supporter. The review found actual outcomes from student GenAI use were predominantly successful, while students’ perceived outcomes differed by use pattern. Self-regulatory-support use had the lowest challenge-to-success ratio in the review; that is a synthesis across studies, not proof that a particular prompt will work for everyone.

Use that supports learning
AI is more plausibly serving learning when it helps students work through a learning process rather than replacing the work being assessed. For example, a student might ask for a concept to be explained at two levels, compare the explanation with course materials, identify what remains unclear, and then answer a new question without assistance. The important check is whether the student can do the relevant work—not whether the tool produced a clear response.
Use that can obscure learning
If AI supplies the reasoning, evidence, or final response that a student is meant to produce, the submission may reveal little about the student’s own understanding. That does not mean every use of generation harms learning; it means a submitted product alone may be a poor measure of independent mastery when assistance is part of the process.

What does the evidence say about motivation and engagement?
Reviews report positive average results for some motivation and engagement measures, but those measures are not interchangeable with achievement, mental effort, self-efficacy, or agency. A 2025 review and meta-analysis by Qi Xia and colleagues found that outcomes varied with subject, instructional strategy, context, and sample size. It did not find a statistically significant moderator effect for agency engagement. The evidence therefore supports neither a blanket claim that AI makes students more motivated nor a claim that it inevitably makes them passive.
How a student uses a tool matters. A tutor-like exchange that prompts a learner to explain a concept may feel different from asking a system to finish an assignment. Motivation reported during a short intervention also does not by itself show that a student will continue studying, retain knowledge, or work independently over time.

Do faculty trust students to use AI responsibly?
The available direct comparison is a bounded case, not a national measure of faculty trust. In a voluntary online survey at one large public university in the southeastern United States, 982 students and 76 faculty members responded in Fall 2023. Junghwan Kim and colleagues reported similar student and faculty attitudes on most measures. Students rated GenAI as easier to use and more enjoyable, and showed more interest in exploring new technologies; faculty reported more habitual use. Both groups expressed concern about possible negative effects on several learning competencies.
The survey did not establish that faculty generally trust—or distrust—students’ AI use. It covered one institution, had a much smaller faculty sample than student sample, and measured perceptions rather than a population-wide trust rate. A 2025 systematic review focused on educator trust in GenAI recommends faculty involvement in policy, phased adoption, and clear integrity and ethics guidance; those recommendations do not quantify how common trust or distrust is.

How can students and instructors use AI without confusing assistance with learning?
The 2026 student-use review recommends prompt training, integrity guardrails, and preserving students’ authorial voice. The evidence does not establish that any one policy or prompt causes better learning, but these practices make expectations and the student’s role more visible.
For students
- Check the course rules before using AI, especially for assessed work. Ask what uses are allowed and whether disclosure is required.
- Use the tool to clarify, question, or test your understanding, then verify important claims against course materials and other assigned sources.
- After receiving help, try to explain the idea or solve a related problem without the tool. That gives you a better check of what you can do independently than a polished AI-assisted answer does.
- Keep your own reasoning and voice in the work, and disclose assistance when the instructor or assignment requires it.
- Do not enter private or sensitive information unless the course and the tool’s data practices make that appropriate.
For instructors
- State which AI uses are allowed for each assignment and what students must disclose.
- Align permitted assistance with the learning objective: if the goal is independent problem-solving, assess that ability directly rather than inferring it from a polished submission.
- Teach students to evaluate outputs, check sources, and recognize errors, rather than treating AI fluency as evidence of accuracy.
- Consider assessment opportunities that reveal student understanding, such as explanations, revision records, oral follow-up, or a related task completed without assistance, where appropriate to the course.
- Include faculty and students in policy discussions and make integrity expectations clear; broad adoption should not outrun the clarity of those expectations.
For any course policy, the most useful questions are concrete: What may students use AI to do? What must they disclose? How will the assignment assess learning rather than tool output? What information must not be entered into an AI system?
