A Strong Sell rating signals a negative view under the scale used by the analyst, broker, or platform that issued it. It is not a standardized forecast that a stock will fall by a particular amount—or at all. To understand the label, first find out whether it is one analyst’s opinion or an aggregated consensus, then check the provider’s scale, time period, and methodology.

What does a Strong Sell rating mean?

In general, Strong Sell is the most negative category on a provider’s recommendation scale. The exact definition belongs to that provider: it might refer to an expected absolute decline in a share price, underperformance against a benchmark, or a score calculated from multiple analysts’ recommendations.

For example, Fidelity’s research glossary describes two distinct product definitions. ValuEngine’s Strong Sell category means a forecast one-year return below -12%. S&P Capital IQ STARS’ one-star Strong Sell means expected underperformance against the applicable benchmark, with the shares also expected to fall in absolute price. These are definitions for those products, not thresholds that apply to analyst ratings generally.

Does Strong Sell mean the stock will go down?

No. The label records a negative assessment under a particular methodology; it does not guarantee a future price move. A rating’s assumptions, forecast period, and benchmark may not be visible in the label itself, and future performance can differ from the assessment.

The definitions available from the providers explain how categories are assigned, but they do not establish a comparable predictive-accuracy rate across services. There is no sound basis here for turning Strong Sell into a universal probability of decline or expected loss.

Is Strong Sell an analyst’s rating or a consensus?

It can be either. An individual analyst or broker may issue a recommendation, while a platform may combine multiple recommendations into a consensus. A consensus is a separate calculation, not simply another name for one analyst’s view.

TipRanks consensus described by IG

IG’s Help Centre description of TipRanks says the TipRanks consensus uses analyst ratings from the prior three months and groups them into five categories. Under that methodology, Strong Sell corresponds to a score above 4.5 and requires at least three ratings in the period. If there are only one or two ratings, the result is normalized to Moderate Sell. Those thresholds and rules are specific to this consensus.

TradingView Analyst rating

TradingView’s support documentation says its Analyst rating represents the consensus of broker recommendations for a security and identifies FactSet as the source. Strong Sell is one of its five possible labels. TradingView distinguishes this Analyst rating from its Technical rating, which is based on technical indicators; the two should not be treated as the same signal.

TD Analyst Centre

TD Analyst Centre’s description says recommendations are usually expressed as Buy, Hold, or Sell, although terminology can vary, and explains that its overall rating uses its own scoring approach. A label from one centre therefore cannot be assumed to use another provider’s aggregation rules.

Do all analysts use the same rating scale?

No. Providers can use different labels, thresholds, inputs, and forecast conventions. Even when two services display Strong Sell, the underlying meaning may differ: one may describe a forecast return over a stated period, another benchmark-relative performance, and another an aggregation of recent recommendations.

Before comparing labels, check these details on the source platform:

  • Issuer: Is this an individual analyst’s or broker’s recommendation, or a platform consensus?
  • Scale: What categories are available, and how does the provider define Strong Sell?
  • Combination method: If it is a consensus, how are ratings weighted or grouped, and how many are required?
  • Period: Does the definition use a forecast horizon or a lookback window for ratings?
  • Performance basis: Does it imply an absolute price decline, underperformance versus a benchmark, or another measure?

How to interpret a Strong Sell label on a platform

  1. Open the rating’s methodology or help page. Look for the platform’s definition of the category rather than assuming the wording is standardized.
  2. Identify the source of the rating. Determine whether it is one analyst’s recommendation, a broker’s view, or a consensus assembled by the platform.
  3. Check the period and comparison basis. Note any forecast horizon, rating lookback window, benchmark, or absolute-return condition.
  4. Read the label as one input, not a conclusion. The category alone does not establish whether a security will rise or fall, or whether the rating has been accurate.
