In a 2014 laboratory experiment, researchers transmitted data at a gross rate of 255 terabits per second through a specially fabricated optical fiber. That result showed how multiple cores and spatial modes can increase the capacity of a single fiber. It did not mean that one deployed strand carried the public internet, or that a household could buy a 255 Tbps connection.

What did the 255 Tbps experiment demonstrate?

A team from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the University of Central Florida’s CREOL reported transmitting 255 Tbps through a specially fabricated fiber. The underlying paper by R.G.H. van Uden and colleagues appeared online in Nature Photonics on 26 October 2014; TU/e’s report followed on 27 October. The report described the result as more than 20 times the then-current standard of 4–8 Tbps. TU/e’s 2014 report, published by Phys.org

The fiber was less than 200 microns in diameter, close to the size of conventional fiber. As TU/e’s Dr. Chigo Okonkwo put it: “At less than 200 microns in diameter, this fibre does not take noticeably more space than conventional fibres already deployed.” The resemblance in size did not make the experimental fiber an ordinary deployed cable: its internal structure and the transmission equipment were specialized.

How can one fiber carry so much data?

A conventional optical fiber carries information as light. The 2014 demonstration increased capacity by sending independent data streams along multiple spatial paths within one fiber, then separating and recovering those streams at the receiving end.

Seven cores create parallel paths

The research fiber had seven cores within a shared outer cladding. Each core provided a separate spatial channel for light. This is called space-division multiplexing: rather than relying on one core alone, the system uses several paths inside a single fiber.

Multiple modes add channels within each core

The experiment also used two additional orthogonal spatial mode dimensions. Modes are distinct patterns in which light can travel through a core; using more than one lets a system carry more independent channels through that core. The combination of multiple cores and modes is sometimes pictured as turning a one-lane road into a seven-lane highway with additional stacked lanes.

  • CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.

Transmitters and receivers make the channels usable

Transmitters encode data onto light channels. At the receiving end, coherent detection and digital signal processing help separate and recover the signals. The headline rate therefore belongs to a complete experimental transmission system, not to a passive cable operating on its own.

Does 255 Tbps mean one fiber can carry all internet traffic?

“Could carry all of the internet’s traffic” was a scale comparison and an argument about possible future capacity, not a description of network architecture. The 2014 result came from a laboratory demonstration using specially fabricated fiber, test transmitters and receivers, and signal-processing equipment. It did not route the public internet through one strand.

Nor does the gross experimental throughput translate directly into usable end-user data rates. Error-correction and protocol overhead, equipment limits, transmission distance, and the need to combine links across a network all affect the rate delivered to users. A household fiber plan is not a 255 Tbps service.

How does the 2014 result compare with later demonstrations?

The 255 Tbps figure is a historical result, not the current record across all fiber experiments. Later demonstrations reported higher capacities using different fiber types and test conditions. Their rates should not be treated as directly comparable without considering distance, cores, wavelength bands, coding, launch power, amplification, and whether the fiber was laboratory-made, commercially available or field deployed.

Reported result Fiber and test details Source
255 Tbps (2014) Specially fabricated seven-core fiber using additional spatial modes; diameter under 200 microns. The report does not state a transmission distance. TU/e report via Phys.org
301 Tbps (2024) Commercially available standard optical fiber; 1,097 wavelengths across E, S, C and L bands; tested up to 150 km. The system used bismuth-doped fiber amplifiers, gain equalization and distributed Raman amplification. NICT, 2024
1.02 petabits/s over 1,808 km (2025) Coupled 19-core fiber with standard 0.125 mm cladding; 180 wavelengths in the C and L bands; recirculating loops and optical amplification. NICT and Sumitomo Electric, 2025
300.28 Tbps over 39 km (2025) Field-deployed fiber. UCL reported adding the O-band to an existing S/C/L-band system on standard single-mode fiber, nearly doubling available bandwidth in that demonstration. UCL, 2025

These figures answer different engineering questions. A record over a short laboratory link, a long-distance test using a many-core fiber, and a demonstration on field-deployed cable do not measure the same system under the same conditions. Throughput alone cannot show which approach is easiest or cheapest to deploy.

Does the experiment mean ordinary fiber cables support 255 Tbps?

No. The 2014 result depended on specially fabricated seven-core, few-mode fiber and matching transmission and reception equipment. Ordinary consumer fiber-optic cables are not that research fiber and are not rated for 255 Tbps. The experiment demonstrated a way to increase the physical transmission capacity of an optical link; by itself, it did not establish manufacturing yield, field reliability, compatibility with existing amplifiers, or economical network deployment.
