Western Digital’s Ultrastar Hs14 was a 3.5-inch, 14TB helium hard drive designed for enterprise storage. WD called it the world’s first enterprise-class 14TB HDD. It used host-managed shingled magnetic recording (SMR), a capacity-focused design intended for data-center workloads with software able to manage its sequential write pattern—not a universal drop-in replacement for a desktop hard drive.

What WD launched—and when

The product at the heart of the announcement was the Ultrastar Hs14. WD’s story unfolded in two stages: a roadmap announcement in 2016, followed by a named product and availability statement in 2018.

  • December 6, 2016: WD said it planned to extend its He12 platform with a 14TB SMR drive. At the time, the company said it was sampling the product to select OEMs and expected general availability in mid-2017. That was a forecast, not confirmation of when the drive ultimately shipped. WD’s 2016 announcement
  • June 18, 2018: WD identified the drive as the Ultrastar Hs14, announced that Huawei had qualified it, and said the drives were then available. WD described it as a 3.5-inch helium HDD built with fourth-generation HelioSeal and second-generation host-managed SMR. WD’s 2018 announcement

So the Hs14 is the answer to “What was Western Digital’s first 14TB hard drive?”—with an important qualification: “world’s first” was WD’s description of its enterprise-class drive, not an independently adjudicated title.

How the Hs14’s SMR recording works

Shingled magnetic recording increases storage density by writing tracks so that they overlap, much like shingles on a roof. The trade-off is that updating data is less straightforward than on a drive that writes tracks without that overlap: rewriting a track can affect neighboring tracks.

#1 Best Overall
Western Digital 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 SATA HDD - 7200 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, 512MB Cache, 3.5" - WUH721414ALE604 (Renewed)
  • Massive 14 TB capacity in a standard 3.5″ form factor—great for high-density storage arrays and large-scale data environments.
  • HelioSeal helium-sealed platform reduces turbulence and power consumption—achieving industry-leading efficiency at ~0.39 W/TB idle
  • Advanced performance tech: 7200 RPM spindle, 512 MB cache, TDMR tech, and dual-stage microactuator enhance throughput (~255 MiB/s typical) and resilience under vibration.
  • Enterprise-grade durability & reliability: Rated for 2.5 million hours MTBF, supports 24×7 availability, 600K load/unload cycles, and low non-recoverable error rate of 1E-15
  • SATA 6 Gb/s interface with Power‑Disable feature allows precise power control in dense server configurations. Note: may require adapter (e.g., Molex‑to‑SATA) for older systems.

The Hs14 used host-managed SMR. In this approach, the host system’s software must account for the drive’s sequential write requirements. Data can be staged and then written as a larger unit, so the workload and software need to be designed for that behavior. WD says enterprise deployments require software changes to handle it. Its explanation of UltraSMR and sequential data handling describes the broader technology; the Hs14 release identifies its recording method as second-generation host-managed SMR.

That makes the Hs14 a poor assumption for a general-purpose desktop upgrade unless the host and workload explicitly support host-managed SMR. A buyer should verify the recording method, host software, and intended write pattern rather than choosing by capacity alone.

  • Designed with a workload rating up to 550TB per year, 10X desktop rating (Workload rate is defined as the amount of data transferred to or from the hard drive; Workload Rate is annualized (TB transferred X (8760/ recorded power on hours); Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations
  • Up to 2.5M hours MTBF with a 5 year limited warranty
  • Five generations of HelioSeal technology (10TB and above)
  • Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology for vibration protection

What helium and HelioSeal mean

HelioSeal and SMR describe different things. HelioSeal is WD’s helium-drive platform; WD identified the Hs14 as using fourth-generation HelioSeal. Helium describes the drive’s internal environment and platform, while SMR describes how the magnetic tracks are recorded. One is not a synonym for the other.

Where WD positioned the Hs14

WD targeted cloud and hyperscale data-center customers. Its launch example was Huawei’s OceanStor 9000 storage system for video-surveillance data. WD said Huawei used Redirect on Write to make use of the SMR drive’s capacity.

HGST WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB SATA 6Gb/s 3.5-Inch Data Center HDD - WUH721414ALE604 0F31152 (Renewed)
  • 14TB Ultrastar data center high capacity internal hard disk drive
  • Sata-to-sata power adapter cable included for legacy system compatibility, power-disable feature enables host power control, power supply cables that have 4 wires do not require an adapter.
  • HelioSeal technology is key to achieving higher drive capacities, greater reliability ratings, and extreme power efficiency.
  • Up to 58% lower idle W, TB than 8TB Ultrastar air-filled drives, top of the line mean-time-between-failure of 2.5 million hours.

WD reported that this Huawei solution, compared with solutions using 8TB drives, could save up to 40% of room floor space and deliver more than 40% lower power consumption than 8TB-drive solutions it said were commonly used in the industry at the time. These are WD’s figures for the described solution and comparison—not independent measurements or a promise for every installation.

“The Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive advances Western Digital’s portfolio leveraging the HelioSeal platform to deliver industry-leading high capacity HDD storage with exceptional power efficiency.”

Hs14 versus WD’s later 14TB HC530

The Ultrastar DC HC530 is a separate, later WD enterprise drive—not another name for the Hs14. WD’s April 2020 data sheet gives the following specifications for the HC530. It notes that specifications can vary by part number and are not a warranty.

What to check before choosing a 14TB drive

  • Workload and recording method: confirm whether the drive is host-managed SMR and whether the host software supports its required sequential write handling.
  • Interface: verify that the system supports the drive’s SATA or SAS connection; capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
  • Product identity: distinguish the Hs14 from the later HC530. Specifications for one model should not be attributed to the other.
  • Current availability: WD said the Hs14 was available in its June 2018 announcement, but that historical statement does not establish present-day stock or sales status.
