Yes—you can capture a webpage for free with a browser extension. The right extension depends on whether you need the visible viewport, a stitched full-page image, a selected region, editing and redaction, PDF output, and local processing. “Free” may cover basic capture while placing advanced features behind an upgrade, so check the current listing, permissions, and export limits before installing.
What a free webpage screenshot extension does
A browser screenshot extension runs inside your browser and saves what the page renders. Basic tools capture the visible viewport. Full-page tools scroll through content below the fold, capture several sections, and stitch them into one tall image or PDF. Selected-area modes let you capture only a component such as a pricing table, article, or chart.
- Visible-area capture: saves only the portion currently shown in the tab.
- Full-page capture: scrolls and combines sections so content below the viewport is included.
- Selected-area capture: captures a rectangle or, in some tools, an element you select.
- Editing: crop, annotate, blur, pixelate, or redact sensitive information before saving.
- Export: commonly PNG or PDF; some tools also offer JPEG or JPG.
Long or interactive pages are not photographs of an immutable document. Sticky headers, animations, lazy-loaded images, infinite scrolling, cross-origin frames, and pages that require a login can produce seams or missing content. A reliable workflow waits for the page to settle, checks the result at full size, and recaptures with a different mode when necessary.

| Extension | Browser and capture modes | Editing and output | Free-plan and privacy notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Page Screen Capture | Chrome; the listing describes full-page capture. | Built-in editor with crop, annotation, blur/pixelation, redaction, and OCR; PNG, JPG, and PDF. | The Chrome Web Store listing says it is free without signup, watermark, or premium tier. These are listing claims, not independent testing. |
| GoFullPage | Chromium browsers; full-page capture. | Capture workflow and dialogs are described in its listing. | The listing records version 8.9, updated September 25, 2026, and mentions fixes for Chromium 153’s new URL requirement. It also contains a developer statement that it will not collect or use data. Recheck the current listing because version and disclosures can change. |
| FireShot | Chrome; full-page, visible-area, and selection capture. | PDF, PNG, and JPEG. The listing describes an upgrade for additional editing and workflow features. | The listing shows version 2.1.4.18, updated May 24, 2026. Basic availability and advanced-feature boundaries can change. |
| OpenCapture | Chrome, Edge, and Firefox; full-page and visible-area capture. | Crop, annotation, blur, undo, and PNG/PDF export. | Its product site says processing is local and these capture/editing functions are free. Optional tiled logo or text watermarking costs $5 for 1,000 credits as a one-time purchase, according to the site. |
| Full Page Capture | Chrome; full-page capture. | The vendor site lists PNG, JPEG, and PDF export. | The site claims it is free, requires no account, and processes captures locally. Treat those as vendor statements and inspect the current permissions. |

Choose editing and redaction first
If screenshots may contain email addresses, order numbers, API keys, or customer names, choose a tool that explicitly includes blur, pixelation, or redaction. Full Page Screen Capture and OpenCapture describe those controls. Zoom into the final image and verify that the obscured text cannot be read around the edges.

Choose PDF output for records
FireShot, Full Page Screen Capture, OpenCapture, and Full Page Capture list PDF output. PDF export is useful for a handoff or archive, but check page breaks: a very wide page may be scaled down until text is difficult to read.
Choose local-processing claims for sensitive pages
OpenCapture says captures remain local. Full Page Capture also claims local processing, while GoFullPage’s listing contains a developer data-use disclosure. These statements apply only to those products; they do not prove how another extension handles data. For confidential work, review permissions and privacy information immediately before installation.
Choose the simplest no-account workflow
The Full Page Screen Capture listing says no signup, watermark, or premium tier is required. Full Page Capture’s site says no account is required. Confirm the current listing because stores and vendors can change these conditions.
How to install and take a full-page screenshot
- Open the official extension store. In Chrome, open the Chrome Web Store; in Edge, use the Edge Add-ons store; in Firefox, use Add-ons and Themes. Search the exact extension name and verify the publisher, permissions, update date, and privacy disclosure.
- Install only after reviewing access. Select Add to Chrome, Get, or the equivalent Firefox control, then approve the requested permissions. Avoid extensions whose access is broader than your use case.
- Open the target page. Wait for the main content, images, fonts, and consent dialog to finish loading. If the page uses “load more” or infinite scrolling, trigger it until all required content is present.
- Open the extension. Select its toolbar icon. If it is hidden, use the browser’s Extensions menu and pin it for easier access.
- Pick a mode. Use full-page for everything, visible-area for the current viewport, or selection for one region. FireShot explicitly describes all three modes; other extensions may use different labels.
- Let scrolling finish. Do not switch tabs or interact with the page while the extension scrolls and stitches sections. Long pages can take noticeably longer than a viewport capture.
- Edit and inspect. Crop unwanted margins, annotate if needed, and blur or redact private data. View the image at 100% to check for duplicated sticky headers, blank strips, seams, or missing lazy-loaded images.
- Export and name the file. Choose PNG for lossless screenshots, JPEG when a smaller photographic file is acceptable, or PDF for a document-style handoff. Use a filename containing the site, page, and date.
Making full-page captures more reliable
Lazy-loaded images and infinite scroll
Scroll the page manually first, or use the page’s “load more” control, so images exist before capture. If a tool offers a delay or a wait-for-element option, wait for a distinctive content selector rather than guessing that the page is ready.
Sticky headers and fixed chat buttons
A fixed navigation bar can appear in every stitched segment. If the extension supports hiding an element, hide the header or chat button before capture. Otherwise, use a visible-area capture for the affected section and assemble a document manually.
Animations, carousels, and videos
Pause carousels and videos when possible. Capture after the desired frame is visible. Animated content may differ between segments because the page changes while the extension scrolls.

Frames, restricted pages, and browser-internal URLs
Extensions may not be able to capture browser settings pages, extension pages, or content protected by frame restrictions. Capture the frame directly if the browser allows it, or use the page’s own export function. For a logged-in page, keep the session active and never share the resulting file unless the account owner permits it.

Editing, redaction, and format decisions
- PNG: best for text, interfaces, and diagrams where crisp edges matter.
- JPEG/JPG: useful when file size matters and minor compression artifacts are acceptable.
- PDF: convenient for review and printing, but verify scaling and page breaks.
- Blur or pixelation: use enough area to cover the complete secret, including labels and nearby identifiers.
- Crop: remove browser chrome, unrelated navigation, and excess whitespace before sharing.
Keep an untouched original when the screenshot is evidence or part of a support ticket. Make a separate redacted copy for external recipients.
Privacy, permissions, and changing listings
A screenshot extension can read the page you ask it to capture. Before installation, inspect the permission prompt, the store’s privacy section, and the vendor’s policy. Do not infer that a local-processing statement from one product applies to another. The OpenCapture page says processing is local; the GoFullPage listing includes a developer data-use declaration; Full Page Capture’s site makes its own local-processing claim. These are product-specific statements rather than an independent audit.
Version numbers, update dates, browser compatibility, prices, and feature boundaries change. For example, the GoFullPage listing records version 8.9 and a September 25, 2026 update, while FireShot’s listing records version 2.1.4.18 and a May 24, 2026 update. Use the current store page when you install, especially if your browser has recently updated.
Troubleshooting common failures
The extension captures only the visible area
Choose the explicit full-page command rather than the browser’s built-in viewport screenshot. If no full-page option exists, the extension may not support it on that page or in its free tier.

Reload without other heavy tabs, wait for images, disable an obstructive content blocker temporarily, and recapture. For lazy-loaded pages, scroll through the page once before invoking full-page capture.

Headers or buttons are duplicated
Fixed elements are being stitched repeatedly. Hide the selector if the extension offers that control, or capture smaller sections with the header visible only once.
The page stops halfway
Infinite scrolling, a navigation change, a login timeout, or a browser memory limit can interrupt the process. Load a finite amount of content, capture in sections, or export from the site itself.
Text is too small in the PDF
Use a narrower capture, landscape orientation if offered, or PNG for the original image. A PDF that scales a desktop-width page onto portrait paper will reduce readability.

Cancel and reassess whether the requested access is necessary. Check that you are using the official store listing and a current browser version. Do not install a repackaged extension from an unknown download site.

For automated jobs, CI pipelines, bulk URLs, or screenshots that must be reproducible, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server rather than a browser extension. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameter details. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so AI agents can take captures without browser setup.

FAQ
Can I capture a page without installing an extension?
Yes. Desktop browsers have built-in viewport screenshot commands, but full-page support and export controls vary. An extension or an API is more practical when you need repeatable full-page, PDF, or automated captures.
Will a free extension capture a page behind a login?
Usually the extension sees the rendered tab, so an active browser session may be required. Read the extension’s permissions and avoid sharing captures that contain private account data.
Why does one extension offer more features than another for free?
“Free” is a product-specific boundary. Some listings include editing and OCR at no charge, while others reserve advanced editing or watermark-related features for an upgrade or credits. Verify the current listing before choosing.
