A webpage screenshot archive can help you inspect an older version of a page, but an archived webpage is not the same as a standalone screenshot image. For most readers, the practical starting point is the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine: search for a known page URL and choose an available capture, or use Save Page Now to submit a single page for capture. Neither route guarantees a complete copy of the page or its interactive features.
What a webpage screenshot archive is—and is not
The Internet Archive Help Center describes the Wayback Machine as “a service that allows people to visit archived versions of Web sites.” In practice, it lets you open a webpage as captured at a particular time. The result is a replayable archived page, not necessarily a single image of the page as it appeared on screen.
A screenshot is a visual record, typically an image file such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. A replayable archive may instead serve captured HTML and whatever related resources were saved, such as stylesheets or images. It can preserve more context than a picture, but can also be incomplete or behave differently from the original page. A screenshot is easier to use as a fixed visual reference; an archive can make text and links accessible, but its fidelity depends on what was captured.
That distinction matters when you need to prove what a page looked like, recover a removed article, follow a historical link, or preserve a page for later reference. Choose the format that suits the task, and do not treat an archived page as a complete backup of a website.

Find an existing archived webpage
- Get the most specific URL you can. A full page address is more precise than a domain. If you only know the site, start with its domain; a particular article or product page may have a separate capture history.
- Enter the URL in the Wayback Machine. The archive displays available capture dates for that address. A result is not guaranteed: the page may never have been captured, or a particular date may not be available.
- Choose a capture date and open it. Check the calendar or capture list for a date close to the period you need. Captures are snapshots, not a continuous recording, so the archive may have gaps.
- Check the capture timestamp in the address. Wayback timestamps use the pattern
yyyymmddhhmmss. For example, the digits represent year, month, day, hour, minute, and second of the capture. Treat that as the archive capture time, not the page’s publication or update date. - Inspect the page and relevant resources. Follow important links and look for missing images, styling, or other content. A page opening successfully does not show that every part of it was preserved.
If your goal is to find a site rather than revisit a page whose URL you already know, Internet Archive Help Center material also describes Wayback Machine Site Search. Search results and archived coverage are different things: finding a site does not guarantee that the particular page or date you want has a capture.
Save a page that has no useful capture
Internet Archive’s Save Page Now is a one-time submission tool for an individual page. Submit the page address and, if the service can access it, it provides a URL for the resulting capture. Internet Archive says the save includes the entered page’s images and CSS, but does not save outlinks or crawl the entire website. Saving a page therefore does not preserve every linked page, and one submission is not a scheduled preservation plan.
Use Save Page Now
- Open the Save Page Now function in the Wayback Machine.
- Enter the complete URL of the page you want saved, including the path after the domain.
- Submit the page and wait for the service to attempt the capture.
- When a capture URL is returned, open it and review the result, including images and layout.
- Keep the returned URL with a note of why you saved the page and when you checked it.
A failed or partial save is possible. The site may block the process, require access the crawler does not have, or depend on scripts and resources that cannot be replayed from the archive. If only one element is missing, check whether that resource has its own archived copy; do not infer that the whole page is intact from its text alone.

Submit from a browser extension
Internet Archive also documents browser extensions as a way to submit a page while browsing. This can be convenient if you are already on the page, but it does not change the scope of the capture: it is still a one-page submission, subject to access and completeness limits. It is not a substitute for a crawl of a site or a guarantee that a dynamic page will replay exactly as it did in your browser.
Why a page may be missing or incomplete
The archive does not contain every page or every version of a page. Internet Archive notes that crawlers may not have discovered a site, while pages can also be password protected, blocked by robots rules, otherwise inaccessible, or excluded at an owner’s request. A missing capture alone does not tell you which of these explanations applies.
- No capture appears: Try the exact page URL as well as the domain, including older or alternate paths if you know them. The page may simply not have been captured.
- Text appears but images or layout are missing: The dependent resources may not have been captured, or the page may call resources from its live origin. Check the capture at another date before concluding that the archive has no usable version.
- Controls or interactive content fail: JavaScript that relies on a live service or origin may not work in an archived replay. A captured page can preserve visible content without preserving the behavior behind it.
- A specific page is absent although the site is present: The page may be an orphan page that crawlers did not discover, or its path may not have been linked from pages the crawler visited.
- The content is behind a login or blocked: A crawler may not be able to access it. Do not assume that submitting the URL will bypass access controls.
Simple HTML is generally easier to archive than a page that depends on extensive scripts. For an important historical reference, inspect the page’s relevant assets and nearby captures rather than relying only on the timestamp or the fact that a replay loads.

Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Look at an older version of a page | Browse an existing Wayback capture | Availability varies by URL and date; review the capture and its assets. |
| Submit one page that is not archived | Save Page Now or a browser extension | One-time page capture; no crawl of outlinks, and access or replay can fail. |
| Capture a live page as a visual image or PDF | A screenshot tool or screenshot API | Creates a new visual capture, not a historical Wayback version. |
| Collect a site or set of sites on a recurring schedule | An organizational web-archiving service such as Archive-It | Paid institutional service for recurring crawls, with archivist and technical support; confirm current scope and terms. |
For individuals, the distinction is usually straightforward: use the Wayback Machine to look for a past capture, and Save Page Now when you want to submit one accessible page. An organization that needs repeatable collection, broader scope, or staff support should evaluate a managed crawling service. Archive-It is described by Internet Archive as a paid service for organizations with recurring preservation needs; current pricing, scope, and referral terms should be checked directly with the service.
How to cite an archived webpage responsibly
When making a historical claim, identify both the original page and the archived version you actually consulted. Include the page title or author where available, the original page address, the Wayback capture URL, the capture date, and your access date according to the citation style you are using. Internet Archive’s help guidance relays MLA advice to give ample details and include the archived URL; when an update date is absent, the nearest capture date may be used.
Keep three dates distinct: the page’s original publication or update date, the archive’s capture timestamp, and the date you accessed the replay. The timestamp helps identify the archived version; it does not prove every embedded resource or interactive behavior was captured. For legal matters, do not assume the Wayback Machine is a court-ready record: the Help Center says it was not expressly designed for legal use and points to a separate affidavit process for court requests.
