Webb’s observations indicate that a likely Jupiter-sized planet died by spiraling into its star, not because the star swelled into a red giant and engulfed it. The evidence comes from infrared measurements of the star and its aftermath, reported by NASA/JPL on April 10, 2025.

What happened to the planet?

The system, called ZTF SLRN-2020, lies about 12,000 light-years away in the Milky Way. The doomed planet was probably about Jupiter-sized and orbited closer to its star than Mercury does to the Sun.

Rather than wait for its star to expand, the planet gradually lost orbital distance over millions of years. As it began grazing the star’s atmosphere, drag slowed it and caused it to fall inward faster. The planet then plunged into the star and was destroyed.

How did Webb change the explanation?

The original 2023 interpretation was that an aging, Sun-like star had expanded into a red giant and swallowed a nearby planet. Webb’s follow-up observations, reported by NASA/JPL in 2025, instead favored a planet-driven plunge: the star was not bright enough in the infrared to be an expanded red giant.

Proposed explanation What it predicts What Webb found
Red-giant engulfment The star expanded and engulfed a nearby planet. MIRI measured infrared emission showing that the star was not bright enough to be an expanded red giant.
Orbital decay and plunge The planet gradually spiraled inward, then fell rapidly through the star’s atmosphere. The star’s measured brightness and the observed hot gas and cooler dust supported this interpretation.

The observations support this reconstruction of one event; they do not establish that every planet engulfment follows the same sequence.

What did Webb actually observe?

Webb did not photograph a planet intact as it entered the star. Its instruments measured infrared light from the system and analyzed what remained. NASA/JPL describes this as the only planet-engulfment event observed in action.

MIRI measured the star’s infrared glow

The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) resolved the star’s otherwise hidden infrared emission. That measurement showed the star was not luminous enough to be an expanded red giant, weakening the original explanation.

NIRSpec identified gas and dust

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) analyzed the system’s light by wavelength. It found a hot disk of molecular gas close to the star, including carbon monoxide, as well as a cooler, expanding cloud of dust farther out.

The two regions represent different parts of the aftermath. Gas expelled from the star’s outer layers cooled, and heavy elements condensed into dust over the following year. The hot inner gas and cooler outer dust together helped researchers reconstruct what happened.

Why does the result matter?

A planet spiraling into its star offers a possible final chapter for close-in worlds and a way to examine how planetary systems evolve. But ZTF SLRN-2020 is one observed event, not a measure of how often engulfment happens. NASA/JPL said future observations from surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope are expected to help test how common similar events are.
