Webb did not first flag the planet: NASA’s TESS mission had already identified evidence of a candidate. Webb’s observations validated it and began probing whether it has an atmosphere.
What did Webb discover?
LHS 475 b is a rocky planet about 41 light-years away in the constellation Octans. NASA and ESA report that its diameter is about 99% of Earth’s, making it almost exactly Earth-sized. That describes its size—not its climate, atmosphere, or habitability.
The planet orbits its star in approximately two days. The study estimated its equilibrium temperature at 586 ± 12 kelvins, assuming zero Bond albedo and uniform heat redistribution. This is a model estimate, not a direct measurement of the planet’s surface temperature. The 2023 study reports a radius of 0.991 Earth radii.
Why is this Webb’s first planet discovery?
“First” refers to Webb confirming the planet, not being the first observatory to spot a clue. TESS data had indicated a candidate. Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) then observed two transits—events in which the planet passed in front of its star from our viewpoint. Those observations confirmed the planet and supplied data for studying its atmosphere.

How did Webb use the transits?
The light curve confirmed the planet
As a planet crosses its star, it blocks a small amount of starlight. The resulting change in brightness—the transit light curve—helps establish that a planet is present and constrain its size and orbit. Webb observed two such transits of LHS 475 b.
The spectrum tested for an atmosphere
During a transit, some starlight passes through the planet’s atmospheric limb, if it has an atmosphere. Different gases can absorb different wavelengths, leaving patterns in the light. Examining those patterns produces a transmission spectrum, which researchers compare with models of possible atmospheres.

Did Webb find an atmosphere?
No definitive atmospheric composition was identified in the 2023 analysis. The team reported a featureless transmission spectrum across wavelengths of 2.9–5.3 micrometres. A featureless spectrum does not prove that the planet has no atmosphere; it means these observations did not distinguish among several remaining possibilities.
- The analysis ruled out a primordial hydrogen-dominated atmosphere and a cloudless, pure-methane atmosphere.
- A high-altitude cloud deck or a tenuous atmosphere remained possible.
- The observations were also consistent with no appreciable atmosphere.
- NASA noted that a compact, pure-carbon-dioxide atmosphere could be difficult to detect.
The paper says the observations demonstrated JWST’s ability to constrain terrestrial-planet secondary atmospheres with absorption features below 50 parts per million. That is a capability shown in this study, not a guarantee that every atmosphere or atmospheric composition can be resolved.

Does Earth-sized mean Earth-like or habitable?
No. LHS 475 b is close to Earth in diameter and is described as rocky, but it is significantly warmer than Earth and has a very short orbit. The available observations did not establish a temperate climate, an Earth-like atmosphere, liquid water, or habitability. They also did not detect life.

Webb confirmed a small, rocky exoplanet and demonstrated how transit observations can both validate a planet and begin testing atmospheric models. The observations narrowed the possibilities without settling whether LHS 475 b has an appreciable atmosphere.
