A web scraping API accepts a request for a web page and returns page content or extracted data. Depending on the service, it may also render JavaScript, manage proxy access, perform browser actions, or return structured fields. To choose one, match those capabilities and the billing model to your actual sites and data needs, then test a representative workload before committing.
What a web scraping API does
A scraping API sits between your collection workflow and target websites. You send a request describing a page and, where supported, the extraction you want. The service handles some combination of making the request, rendering the page, extracting content, and returning a result you can use in your application.

The API can reduce the amount of networking, browser, and extraction infrastructure you operate, but it does not decide what data matters. You still need to identify target pages and fields, validate returned values, and decide how to store or use them. Zyte documents single-URL requests and extraction output, while ScrapingBee documents request parameters and extraction rules: Zyte Scraping API and ScrapingBee documentation.
Common capabilities
- Page access: Send a URL and receive page content, often HTML or a rendered result.
- JavaScript rendering: Load pages in a browser when the content you need appears only after scripts run.
- Browser actions: On services that support them, wait for selectors, click, scroll, or fill fields before capture or extraction.
- Proxy handling: Select or rotate IP addresses, and sometimes choose a geographic location.
- Extraction: Return selected fields as structured data rather than leaving all parsing to your code.
Scraping API versus proxy API
A proxy API is narrower: it routes requests through IP addresses, while you may still need to handle rendering, page parsing, and extraction yourself. A web scraping API may combine access mechanisms with those higher-level tasks. Providers use different feature boundaries, so compare documented behavior rather than relying on the product label. See Zyte’s explanation of proxy APIs.

When you need JavaScript rendering or browser actions
Start by checking whether the required information appears in the page’s initial HTML. For some pages, a regular HTTP request and your own parser are enough. If the page populates its content only after JavaScript runs, you may need a browser-rendering option. Pages that require interaction can also need a wait, click, scroll, or form-fill action before the data is available.
ScrapingBee documents JavaScript rendering and browser actions including clicking, waiting for selectors, scrolling, and filling fields in its API documentation. Treat each as a workload requirement: rendering or interaction can add complexity and, depending on the provider, change what a request costs.
How to choose a web scraping API
Compare services against the pages, fields, locations, and volume you actually expect. A feature list is not a guarantee that a particular target will work, and a vendor’s description is not an independent performance test. Before selecting a provider, run a small proof of concept using representative pages and your real extraction rules.
1. Target compatibility
Test the target domains and page types that matter, including the geography you intend to use where relevant. Check whether the service returns the expected content and whether your validation catches missing, malformed, or stale fields. No general capability claim establishes success on every site.
2. Rendering and interaction
Decide whether static HTML is sufficient or whether you need JavaScript rendering and browser actions. Verify support for the exact waits and interactions your pages require. Avoid paying for browser features on requests that do not need them if the provider’s pricing varies by feature.
3. Access and geography
If location or proxy selection matters, compare the available options and how they are configured. Bright Data lists proxy management and worldwide geotargeting; Zyte describes automated proxy selection. Those are provider descriptions, not guarantees for a specific target or location: Bright Data Scraping Browser and Zyte Scraping API.
4. Extraction and output
Choose between receiving page HTML for your own parser and asking the provider to extract fields into a structured result. Confirm the actual output format and whether it fits your downstream code. ScrapingBee documents extraction rules; Zyte and Bright Data describe structured extraction or parsing options in their product materials.
5. Real cost, not headline price
Compare how a billable request or credit is defined, which options multiply usage, what volume is included, and what limits apply. ScrapingBee documents credit costs that differ with rendering and proxy mode; Zyte describes usage-based pricing. Pricing and credit schedules can change, so check the providers’ live pages before choosing: ScrapingBee pricing and Zyte pricing.

6. Throughput and integration
Read the API reference for authentication, rate or concurrency limits, request formats, errors, and retry guidance. Zyte’s reference documents authentication and synchronous single-URL extraction: Zyte API reference. Confirm that the documented integration model suits your job scheduler and error-handling approach.

7. Operational ownership
Decide how much of parsing, retries, scheduling, monitoring, and maintenance your team wants to own. A hosted API can abstract parts of the workflow, but provider marketing does not establish that operational work disappears. Include these responsibilities in your proof of concept.
Provider examples to compare, not a universal ranking
These examples illustrate different feature combinations. The cited product pages describe what each vendor says it offers; they do not establish a controlled head-to-head winner.

- Choose representative pages. Include the page types and locations your production workflow will actually request.
- Define the expected result. List required fields and acceptable formats, or specify the image or document output if the task is visual capture.
- Test the minimum feature set first. Try a basic request before adding JavaScript rendering, proxy options, or interactions.
- Add only necessary options. Test browser actions and extraction rules against the pages that need them.
- Validate failures and edge cases. Check missing fields, malformed output, timeouts, and error responses; ensure your application can detect and handle them.
- Calculate workload cost. Apply the provider’s current request or credit rules to your expected mix of features and volume.
- Check operational fit. Verify authentication, limits, integration effort, and the monitoring and retry work your team will retain.
Or skip the browser setup
If the deliverable is a clean website screenshot or PDF rather than extracted records, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.
For a quick test, replace the target URL and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a web scraping API guarantee that a target site will return data?
No. Compatibility depends on the target and workload; verify behavior with representative pages rather than treating a provider feature list as a guarantee.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is a screenshot API the same as a web scraping API?
Not necessarily. A screenshot API returns a visual capture or document, while scraping APIs may return page content or extracted structured fields. Choose based on the output your workflow needs.
Can I compare providers using a general speed or success-rate ranking?
The provider materials cited here do not supply a comparable independent benchmark for a universal ranking. Measure candidates under the same conditions on your own representative workload.
