A screenshot API can preserve how a webpage looked when it was rendered, but it does not create a replayable web archive. For preservation, save the page and its resources in a web-archive format such as WARC; keep a screenshot as a visual reference and document when and by whom the capture was made.
What a screenshot API archives—and what it doesn’t
A screenshot is a visual record of a rendered webpage at a particular moment. It can show layout, text, images, and visible interface details, but it is not a package of the page’s underlying content and resources that can be replayed later.
A web archive has a different purpose: collecting web content and resources so they can be preserved and, where supported, replayed. The Library of Congress recommends non-proprietary output that conforms to standard formats and requirements. Its guidance also cautions that some web content cannot currently be captured. Library of Congress web-archiving guidance
Use a screenshot as supplementary visual evidence, not as a substitute for a preservation capture. A screenshot API’s options describe image capture; they do not, by themselves, establish that it saves a replayable web archive.

Choose an output format for preservation
| Format or file | Role and preservation fit |
|---|---|
| WARC | The Library of Congress’s preferred web-archive format, with record-at-a-time GZIP compression. |
| ARC_IA | An acceptable alternative identified by the Library of Congress; a precursor to WARC. |
| WACZ | An acceptable alternative identified by the Library of Congress and used in the Webrecorder project. |
| CDX | A component file for WARC file content; it is not a screenshot image format or a substitute for the archive itself. |
| PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshot | A visual artifact for reference. It does not provide the collected content and replay role of a web archive. |
These formats serve different purposes. Choose an archive format when future access to collected content matters; choose image output when you need a visual record. If you need both, keep both and label them clearly.
A practical workflow for archiving a webpage
- Decide what you need to preserve. If the goal is to show how a page appeared, capture a screenshot. If the goal includes collecting content and resources for future replay, use a web-archiving workflow that produces a standards-based format such as WARC.
- Capture the rendered view. Browser automation can capture the viewport, a full page, or a selected element. For example, Playwright documents
page.screenshot(), full-page capture, element capture, and saving image output to a buffer. Playwright screenshot documentation - Save the preservation capture separately. Use a tool and output format suitable for web archiving. The Library of Congress prefers WARC with record-at-a-time GZIP compression and lists ARC_IA and WACZ as acceptable alternatives. A screenshot alone is not this preservation capture.
- Record the context. Note who or which institution made the capture and the date and time. The Library of Congress recommends displaying the archiving institution, capture date and time, and statements that distinguish archived functionality from the live site.
- Describe the limits. Record what did not capture or may not work in replay. Do not imply that an archived page has the same functionality as the live site.
Capture a screenshot with Playwright
Playwright is useful when you need to automate a browser and save a rendered visual snapshot. The following Node.js example captures a full-page PNG for a target URL:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Install Playwright and its browser before running the script. The screenshot documentation also describes capturing a specific element and returning image data as a buffer; consult it for supported options and details. A successful image capture does not make the result a WARC or guarantee that every page element was rendered.
Check whether a Wayback snapshot already exists
Internet Archive documents two distinct ways to query its public archive. The Availability API can check whether a URL has an accessible snapshot and return the closest one when available. The CDX API supports more complex capture queries, filtering, and analysis. These lookup capabilities are separate from taking a new screenshot or creating your own preservation capture. See the Internet Archive Wayback APIs documentation for current details.

Know the limits of web capture
The Library of Congress warns: “Tools currently available cannot capture all web content, so certain types of web content may not be preservable through web capture at this time.” Its examples include multimedia-rich content, streaming media, deep web content, and databases. Library of Congress web-archiving guidance
- A screenshot records only what was rendered and visible in the captured view; it does not establish that hidden, interactive, or later-loaded content was preserved.
- An archive may collect content without reproducing every live behavior or resource. Describe known gaps rather than promising a complete replica.
- Keep the archive and screenshot as separate, identified deliverables when both preservation and visual reference matter.
Automate the visual capture with ScreenshotNeo
If you need the screenshot portion without managing a browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It returns an image or PDF from a GET request. This creates a visual capture, not a WARC or replayable web archive; use a web-archiving tool as well when preservation is the goal.

The API can capture a viewport or full page, and supports output options including PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Its additional capture controls include element selection, device and viewport settings, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting conditions, and resource blocking. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and behavior.

Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

- The screenshot looks incomplete. A page may load content after initial navigation or place it outside the captured viewport. Use full-page or element capture as appropriate, and consult the browser automation documentation for wait and capture options.
- The archive does not behave like the live page. Archived functionality can differ from the original, and some content or resources may not be capturable. Document the difference and avoid describing the archive as a full working replica.
- You have an image but need to preserve the page. Keep the image as visual evidence, then create a separate web-archive capture using an appropriate archival workflow and format.
- You cannot find an existing snapshot. An Availability API lookup only indicates an accessible snapshot when one is available; use CDX for more complex capture queries, filters, or analysis. Check the Internet Archive API documentation for current endpoint details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot count as a web archive?
No. It records a rendered appearance; it does not collect page content and resources for future replay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich format does the Library of Congress prefer for web archives?
WARC with record-at-a-time GZIP compression. Its guidance also identifies ARC_IA and WACZ as acceptable alternatives.
Can a web archive capture every part of a page?
No. The Library of Congress identifies multimedia-rich content, streaming media, deep web content, and databases as examples of content current tools may not preserve.
