For tracking where rain is falling and how it is moving near you, weather radar is usually the more useful view. Satellite imagery is better for seeing broad cloud systems and storm development. Use both for a fuller picture: radar follows precipitation echoes, while satellite shows the clouds and atmospheric conditions around them. Neither image alone confirms exactly how much rain reached the ground.
What radar shows when you’re tracking rain
National Weather Service Doppler radar sends radio-wave pulses and detects energy returned by targets such as precipitation. The resulting echoes help show where precipitation is occurring and how it is moving. Doppler and dual-polarization products add information about target motion and characteristics. The National Weather Service’s radar overview describes these capabilities.
Radar is therefore usually the better starting point when your question is local and immediate: Is a precipitation area approaching, passing, or moving away? But radar echoes are not always rain; quality control and dual-polarization capabilities help distinguish precipitation from non-precipitation targets.
What satellite imagery adds
Satellite imagery gives broader cloud and atmospheric context. Different channels answer different questions, so “satellite” does not mean one uniform view:

- Water vapor: Shows moisture aloft and atmospheric circulation. It can help explain conditions that may support heavy rain, but it is not a direct picture of rainfall at the surface.

When satellite can give an earlier clue
Satellite can show developing thunderstorms in their earliest stages, before radar detects them, according to the National Weather Service. That is useful storm-development context, not proof that rain is already reaching the ground. The NWS imagery guide discusses this early view.

Which view should you use?

When choosing between weather maps or apps, check what product you are viewing, how local its detail is, whether it updates when you need it, and how it handles radar limitations and non-precipitation echoes. Do not treat one technology as universally more accurate without specifying the location, product, and method used to verify it.
Why radar does not guarantee the rain at ground level
Radar-derived rainfall is an estimate, not a direct measurement at your location. Reflectivity does not translate uniquely into surface rainfall. The radar beam can overshoot shallow or distant precipitation, and terrain blockage or calibration issues can affect estimates. Radar scan timing is not app refresh timing
The National Weather Service says, “In precipitation mode, the WSR-88D completes a volume scan every 4-6 minutes depending upon which VCP is in effect.” That is the scan interval described for the radar system, not a promise that every third-party app refreshes its display on the same schedule. The National Weather Service identifies the rain gauge as the standard for measuring rainfall at the surface. A gauge measures one location, so it can help you compare a local observation with a remote radar estimate but cannot show a moving rain area or replace radar and satellite imagery. The NWS Southeast River Forecast Center’s radar and satellite overview describes how multi-sensor precipitation estimates combine a radar mosaic calibrated with ground-based gauges.
