We Are the Borg is an Esper (white-blue-black) Commander preconstructed deck led by The Borg Queen. Its 99 may contain only white, blue, black, and colorless cards; red and green cards are illegal even though Assimilate can later steal creatures of any color from an opponent. The box contains ten double-sided token cards—five Borg (0019) // Copy and five Borg (0020) // Copy. The Queen costs seven mana, so the most effective upgrades accelerate her, protect the artifact-creature engine, and multiply Borg or Queen tokens without adding off-color cards.

What colors is We Are the Borg?

We Are the Borg has an Esper color identity: white, blue, and black (WUB). Wizards of the Coast labels the deck “White-Blue-Black,” and The Borg Queen’s mana cost is {4}{W}{U}{B}. You may therefore play white, blue, black, and colorless cards in the 99.

Commander identity is broader than the colors printed in a card’s name or artwork. A card is illegal if its mana cost, rules text, color indicator, or other characteristic contains a red or green mana symbol. That rules out most red or green multicolor cards, hybrid cards containing those colors, and otherwise colorless-looking cards with an off-color activation symbol. Artifacts and lands with no off-color symbols remain legal.

The restriction applies while building the deck. It does not stop the deck from taking an opponent’s red or green creature during the game. Once assimilated, that creature is under your control and becomes a Borg artifact creature, so it benefits from the deck’s artifact payoffs.

Can The Borg Queen lead another Commander deck?

Yes. The Queen can command any deck whose identity includes white, blue, and black, or she can appear in the 99 of a commander with an identity that contains all three colors. She cannot lead a mono-white, blue-black, or other deck missing one of those colors.

Locutus of Borg is not reported to have partner, so he is not a second commander alongside the Queen. A player could choose Locutus as a commander for a separate Esper list, but the precon’s face commander is The Borg Queen.

What does The Borg Queen do?

The seven-mana Queen is a 4/4 legendary artifact creature. Her static ability gives artifact creatures you control +2/+2, including herself, making her a 6/6 before other effects. Whenever she enters or attacks, a target opponent exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a creature card; you then assimilate that card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assimilate puts the creature card onto the battlefield under your control with a +1/+1 counter, or changes control of an already-battlefield creature and puts a +1/+1 counter on it. The creature becomes a Borg artifact creature and loses its other creature types. It keeps other card types, supertypes, and printed abilities unless an ability depends on a creature type that was removed.

Library versus graveyard: which wording is correct?

The printed Queen trigger uses an opponent’s library, not a graveyard. Wizards’ product blurb says she “pulls creatures from your opponents’ graveyards,” but that sentence describes the deck’s broader theme and conflicts with the printed ability. The library wording is the version reported for the card’s rules text and should be used when playing.

Graveyard assimilation is still present elsewhere in the 99. Assimilation Assessor exiles a graveyard on entry and assimilates from it on attack, while Assimilate the Wounded also works from a graveyard. Gift of Perfection takes a creature from each opponent’s library, and The Best of Both Worlds assimilates a nonartifact creature an opponent controls before returning that borrowed creature in a later chapter.

What tokens come in the We Are the Borg box?

The regular deck includes ten non-foil, double-sided token cards: five Borg (0019) // Copy tokens and five Borg (0020) // Copy tokens. The two Borg faces are different art variants; each card has a generic Copy token on its reverse.

Collector’s Edition contains the same token count, with a surge-foil treatment on one side and non-foil on the other. The deck does not use transforming permanents for these cards; they are token representations supplied for play.

Why do Borg tokens have Copy on the back?

Several cards create token copies rather than Borg bodies. Hugh, First of Many can replicate artifact spells, and Jurati, Cordial Queen copies an artifact token when your artifact creatures connect. Upgrade cards such as Quantum Misalignment, Reflections of Littjara, Sakashima of a Thousand Faces, Auton Soldier, and Cybermen Squadron also create copies. A double-sided insert lets the same token card represent either result.

Do I need special sleeves?

Use opaque, standard-size sleeves if a token might enter a library or another hidden zone and you need to keep its reverse face concealed. Standard 63.5 × 88 mm opaque sleeves work; inner sleeves with opaque outers are optional. The tokens are not cards in your 99, so they do not need to be shuffled unless a specific effect puts a token into a hidden zone.

Extra official tokens or clearly marked generic 1/1 colorless Borg artifact-creature and Copy tokens are functional substitutes if a game creates more tokens than the ten supplied cards.

How does Assimilate work in a game?

Assimilate is a keyword action, not a deck-construction exception. Resolve it in this order:

  1. Identify the creature or creature card the effect specifies.
  2. If it is a card in a zone, put it onto the battlefield under your control. If it is already on the battlefield, gain control of it.
  3. Put a +1/+1 counter on it.
  4. Make it a Borg artifact creature and remove its other creature types.

The card retains noncreature types such as Vehicle or Spacecraft when applicable, and its printed rules text remains. An ability that says “whenever another Elf…” may stop functioning because the creature is no longer an Elf, but an ability that refers to artifacts, counters, or its name can continue to work.

What is in the stock deck?

Wizards’ 100-card list contains one traditional-foil borderless face commander, 99 non-foil cards (including 32 new-to-Magic cards), ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. The deck has 38 lands, including four Plains, four Islands, and four Swamps.

Stock-list feature Reported count or role
Creatures 20 total, including The Borg Queen; all 20 are artifact creatures
Creatures in the 99 19, all artifact creatures
Artifacts 43 artifacts of any kind, including five Spacecraft
Ramp and mana rocks 13 pieces
Artifact-creature payoffs 14 cards that refer to artifact creatures you control
Assimilate cards 5
Borg-token makers 10
Average nonland mana value 3.34

The 99 also includes 11 instants, five sorceries, and three enchantments under the conventional card types. Five Spacecraft—Type-03 Borg Vessel, Borg Scout Sphere, Transwarp Hub, Class-4 Tactical Cube, and Queen’s Diamond—use the separate station mechanic. Stationing taps another untapped creature at sorcery speed to add charge counters; a Spacecraft can become an artifact creature when it reaches its printed threshold.

Which cards make the engine work?

  • Locutus of Borg: gives lifelink and creates a 1/1 colorless Borg artifact token whenever an artifact creature you control deals combat damage to a player.
  • One, Borg Evolved: gives artifact creatures flying, double strike, vigilance, menace, lifelink, and ward {2}. With the Queen and Tempered Steel, even a 1/1 token can attack as a 5/5 double striker.
  • Battle of Wolf 359: gives nonartifact creatures -X/-X, where X is your artifact-creature count. Because the stock list has no nonartifact creatures, this sweeper is one-sided in the precon.
  • Join the Collective: destroys all creatures, then creates X 1/1 Borg tokens for the number of nonartifact creatures destroyed. Your own Borg creatures die too; the spell rebuilds from opponents’ nonartifact creatures rather than preserving your board.
  • Hugh, First of Many: gives artifact spells replicate {2}{U}, turning spare mana into additional artifact bodies or enters-the-battlefield triggers.

How do you upgrade the We Are the Borg precon?

Start by solving the Queen’s seven-mana timing problem. Replace slow tapped lands and expensive charge-counter artifacts with cost reducers, efficient rocks, and artifact lands. Keep new creatures as artifact creatures when possible so Battle of Wolf 359 remains one-sided and every artifact anthem still applies.

Thopter Spy Network $0.23 Emergency Regeneration
Chief of the Foundry $0.19 Shore Leave Planet

This package preserves 37 lands and 13 ramp pieces while increasing artifact density and reducing the cost of deploying the Queen’s support.

About $7 in thematic upgrades

A separate budget guide priced five cards at roughly $7 on 11 October 2026: Agent of Treachery, Reflections of Littjara, Steel Overseer, Thopter Spy Network, and Fellwar Stone. Reflections multiplies legendary and nonlegendary token production, while Agent adds another theft effect. Check the date on any list you follow: older articles suggested Glacial Fortress, Drowned Catacomb, and Underground River as additions, but all three are already in the official 99.

$25, $50, and $100 upgrade paths

Budget tier Quoted total Main additions and purpose
$25 $24.63 Etherium Sculptor, Foundry Inspector, Shuri, Wakandan Inventor, Urza, Chief Artificer, five artifact lands, Quantum Misalignment, and Clever Concealment. Artifact lands make Conquest Mission trigger on land drops; Quantum Misalignment creates nonlegendary Queen copies; Clever Concealment protects against exile.
$50 $49.51 Add Auton Soldier, Ephemerate, and Basalt Monolith with Forsaken Monument. The package supplies myriad clones, blink value, and an infinite colorless-mana line.
$100 $99.67 Add Cybermen Squadron, Simulacrum Synthesizer, and Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge for larger token and artifact payoffs.

Beyond $100, commonly cited high-cost options include Roaming Throne, Esper Sentinel, and Anointed Procession. Urza, Chief Artificer was identified as a strong single purchase at about $1.12 in one October 2026 price snapshot because affinity discounts artifact creatures, grants menace, and makes large Construct tokens for Jurati to copy.

What should you cut first?

  • Door of Destinies: it counts only Borg spells you cast. It does not count Borg tokens, assimilated creatures, or Spacecraft, and the stock list casts only 19 Borg creature spells.
  • Queen’s Diamond and other slow charge-counter cards: they compete with the need to reach seven mana quickly.
  • Join the Collective: it occupies the Queen’s expensive mana slot and destroys your own artifact creatures.
  • Conquest Mission: the stock deck has zero artifact lands, making its nontoken-artifact landfall-style trigger weaker until you add some.
  • The Best of Both Worlds: its later chapter returns the stolen creature, so it is temporary control rather than permanent theft.

Flavor or maximum efficiency?

A flavor build keeps named Borg cards and the Spacecraft package. An efficiency build adds generic Esper artifact staples, clone effects, cost reducers, and protection. Avoid adding nonartifact creatures merely because they are powerful: doing so weakens Battle of Wolf 359 and reduces the number of cards receiving artifact-specific bonuses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protection deserves special attention. Emergency Regeneration stops destruction, but indestructible and hexproof do not stop exile from effects such as Farewell. Clever Concealment, counterspells, or other phase-out effects cover that weakness.

When does the We Are the Borg deck release, and how much is it?

Wizards of the Coast announced 13 November 2026 as the release date for all four Star Trek Commander decks. The full decklist was published on 26 October 2026, on an announcement page dated 29 October.

Edition Listed MSRP What changes
Regular Commander deck $74.99 Standard treatments, one traditional-foil borderless face commander, ten non-foil tokens
Collector’s Edition $159.99 The same 100 cards in surge foil, a surge-foil borderless face commander, and tokens with surge foil on one side

These are manufacturer list prices, not guaranteed street prices. One 28 October 2026 estimate put the reprint value of We Are the Borg at $104.11 using cheapest non-foil paper prices, about $29 above the listed MSRP, but singles and sealed products can move after release. A report suggested some North American Commander decks might arrive after 13 November; that delay was not confirmed on an official Wizards page.

For playing or upgrading, the regular deck is the practical purchase. Collector’s Edition adds treatment and scarcity, not a stronger list or different strategy.

Which Star Trek Commander deck should you choose?

Among the announced decks, choose We Are the Borg if you enjoy Esper control, artifact creatures, token growth, and stealing opposing creatures. Federation Fleet is Jeskai and focuses on legendary crew, seek-out effects, and Spacecraft; Landing Party is Bant and emphasizes lands and free spells; Klingon Fury is Mardu and centers on attacks and extra combats.

Outside commentary has called We Are the Borg the most focused of the fully listed decks and a strong option on paper, but there is no official Wizards win-rate, sales rank, or power-level number. The product had not released when these lists were compiled, so no original-publisher tournament finish or verified performance result exists.

Are Star Trek Commander cards legal in Commander?

Yes, from the product’s release on 13 November 2026. Before release, card databases may display the new cards as not legal; that status reflects unreleased-set policy rather than a permanent Commander ban. Normal Commander rules—including color identity and the 100-card singleton requirement—still apply.

Is Seven of Nine in both Star Trek decks?

Yes. Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct appears in both We Are the Borg and Federation Fleet. Her reported cost is {2}{U}, so she fits both Esper and Jeskai color identities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many creatures are in We Are the Borg?

The deck has 20 creatures total, counting The Borg Queen, and 19 creatures in the 99. All 20 are artifact creatures, an unusually concentrated feature that makes Tempered Steel, Locutus of Borg, Battle of Wolf 359, and other artifact payoffs function across the entire creature base.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a red creature stolen by Assimilate in this deck?

Yes. Color identity is checked when you build the deck, while Assimilate changes control during the game. A stolen red or green creature is legal to control and becomes a Borg artifact creature after assimilation.

Should I buy two copies of We Are the Borg for upgrades?

Compare the sealed price with the value of duplicate staples, lands, and tokens first. A second copy is most useful when you want extra copies of cards such as Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talismans, or the Esper dual-land package; otherwise, buying targeted singles avoids duplicates of basic lands and weaker role-players.

What happens if an assimilated creature is blinked or changes zones?

Assimilate’s control and type changes apply to that permanent on the battlefield. If it leaves and returns, it generally becomes a new object and returns under the effect’s stated controller, so the Borg type and +1/+1 counter may no longer apply unless the effect gives them again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can The Borg Queen’s library trigger fail to find a creature?

Yes. If the targeted opponent’s library contains no creature card, the exile-until effect reaches the end of that library without finding one, and no card is assimilated. The cards exiled while searching are handled according to the spell or ability’s instructions, including the Queen’s instruction to put the rest on the bottom in random order.

Do Borg tokens count as artifact creatures for stationing and combat triggers?

They do. The supplied Borg tokens are 1/1 colorless Borg artifact creatures, so they can receive artifact-creature bonuses, trigger Locutus when they deal combat damage to a player, and be tapped to help station a Spacecraft when the station ability permits it.
