No—Waze is not a dependable offline navigation app. Waze says that without an internet connection, “you won’t be able to locate or navigate a route.” If service disappears during a trip, information already loaded on your phone may remain briefly, but Waze does not promise turn-by-turn guidance, rerouting, or a usable map through a coverage gap. Before driving somewhere with weak reception, download the entire area in Google Maps or use a dedicated GPS navigator with maps installed on the device.
Will Waze work if I lose cell service?
Not reliably. Waze depends on an active data connection for full operation, and its official help says that without internet it cannot locate or navigate a route. That applies both to starting a trip and to relying on Waze after a connection is lost. Waze does not offer a user-selectable, persistent offline-map download.
There is an important difference between losing service halfway through a route and opening Waze when already offline. In the first case, some map or route information previously loaded on the phone might remain available. Waze volunteer product experts have described that possibility, but it is not a guarantee from Waze. The official guidance remains that Waze cannot locate or navigate a route without internet. A cached screen is not the same as supported offline navigation.
So treat any information that remains after a signal drop as a temporary bonus, not as a plan. Do not depend on it to get to the destination, change destinations, calculate a new route, or recover if you miss a turn. What changes when the signal disappears?
The outcome depends on whether the connection is intermittent or completely unavailable. With intermittent data, Waze may try to retrieve current traffic and hazard information, but those updates can be unreliable. With no connection to Waze’s servers, server-dependent features cannot be counted on.
If you are already following a route
The route or map displayed before the interruption may still be visible for a time, depending on what Waze had loaded. That does not establish that the app can continue giving reliable turn-by-turn directions or recalculate the route. If you leave the displayed route, the app may not be able to find a way back. A volunteer answer also notes that changing the destination without internet may not work; it should not be read as a promise about what will work in every case.
If you need a new route or destination
Do not assume Waze can search for a place, calculate a new trip, or respond to a missed turn while offline. Those actions require the app to locate and navigate a route, which Waze says it cannot do without internet. If you know a coverage gap is ahead, arrange your backup before entering it rather than waiting until a route change becomes necessary.

Live traffic and hazard information may become stale or unavailable when data is intermittent. Without a connection to Waze’s server, hazard reports cannot be submitted, and Waze does not hold reports or map issues to send later. Do not expect a current ETA, automatic rerouting, or a report to go through once service returns.

Why are GPS and mobile data different?
GPS determines a device’s position using signals from satellites; mobile data connects Waze to information and services it needs online. One does not replace the other. Waze describes both GPS and cellular connectivity as necessary for correct operation, while a dedicated navigator can calculate a route from maps installed on the device.
This distinction explains why a phone might still show a GPS position after losing cell service without being able to provide dependable Waze navigation. It also prevents the opposite misunderstanding: having a data connection does not mean a device has satellite reception. How can I prepare an offline backup in Google Maps?
Download the map area while online, before you leave. For driving directions to work offline, the downloaded area must contain the entire route—not just the starting point or destination. Check the map’s coverage and update status before departure, and remember that Google says offline map downloads are restricted in some countries or regions.

On Android
- Connect to the internet and open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile image or initial, then choose Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map, then adjust the selected area so it covers the complete drive.
- Tap the download control and wait for the map to finish downloading before leaving service.
- Before departure, return to Offline maps and check the downloaded area’s coverage and update status.
Google Maps also documents downloading an area from a place listing. On a suitable Android device, an SD card can be used to store offline maps. On Android 6.0 or later, Google requires the card to be configured as portable storage. These are Google Maps storage options; they do not add offline maps to Waze.

- Download the selected map and check that it is available before you begin driving.

What offline Google Maps does—and does not—cover
Google Maps can provide driving guidance offline only when the full route lies inside the downloaded area. It does not provide offline traffic information or alternate driving routes. Offline walking, cycling, and transit directions are unavailable. If your trip crosses the edge of the saved area, do not expect the downloaded map to cover the rest of the journey.
Download a generous area that includes the route and nearby roads you might need, rather than drawing the boundary tightly around the planned line. If you change your plans, check that the replacement route is still within the downloaded map. If not, download a larger area while connected. A saved map is a backup for the area it covers, not a guarantee that every possible detour will work offline.

For an occasional trip, an offline map on your phone is usually the simplest preparation. For recurring drives through dead zones, a dedicated navigator may be worth considering. The choice depends on whether you need live, community-informed routing where service is available, an offline backup for a particular trip, or a separate device with maps installed.

A standalone navigator is an alternative to Waze, not a way to make Waze work offline. Before choosing one, verify that the specific device variant includes maps for the geography you drive in, determine whether traffic information is included, and consider how the device will be powered. What should you do before entering a dead zone?
Prepare while you still have a reliable connection. The most useful backup is one you have downloaded and checked in advance, not a route screen that happens to remain visible after Waze loses data.
- For an occasional gap: download the full driving area in Google Maps and verify that the trip fits inside it.
- For regular remote driving: consider a dedicated GPS navigator with maps installed for your region; confirm the exact device variant and traffic features.
- For a Waze route: use Waze where connected, but do not treat a previously loaded route as guaranteed offline guidance.
- For a changed plan: while still online, check the new destination and route, and expand your offline map if the changed trip is not covered.
If Waze stops updating, do not mistake a visible route or position for proof that routing and alerts are still functioning. Switch to the backup you prepared. If you have no offline map or independent navigator, wait until you have a connection before relying on a newly calculated route.

What is the safest way to think about Waze offline?
