For wet trails, waterfall stops, rocky viewpoints, or long days outside, choose waterproof footwear with a dependable tread. For a trip centered on Reykjavík streets and short, dry outings, comfortable water-resistant shoes may be enough. Let your itinerary, season, expected exposure, and the fit of the footwear decide—not the label alone. For ice, consider traction aids; for glacier activities, follow the operator’s equipment instructions.
Choose by itinerary and conditions
Iceland’s weather can vary, and conditions may become threatening. Wind can be much stronger on mountains and cliff tops, so footwear is one part of preparing for the specific area and forecast. The Environment Agency of Iceland’s traveler safety guidance advises checking conditions and choosing clothing and footwear carefully.
Mostly Reykjavík or paved urban stops
Comfortable, well-fitting water-resistant footwear may suit an urban-focused trip in mild, dry conditions. Visit Reykjavík’s seasonal packing advice recommends comfortable, water-resistant footwear and calls for good footwear on winter streets. That guidance is for city travel; it does not establish that the same shoes will work well on wet trails or ice.
Waterfalls, muddy or rocky viewpoints, and longer outdoor days
Favor waterproof walking or hiking footwear with a useful tread when you expect rain, spray, mud, or rough ground, or will spend extended time outdoors. Visit Reykjanes recommends “waterproof and sturdy walking shoes with a good tread/grip.” That is regional packing advice, not a guarantee that one type of shoe suits every route.

Hiking
For a hike, prioritize a secure fit, grip, and support that suit the route. Ferðafélag Íslands, Iceland’s hiking association, highlights weather and wind as distinctive challenges and recommends navigation equipment and wind- and waterproof clothing. It says other equipment depends on personal needs, trip length, forecast, and season. Its advice is for hiking, not a requirement that every visitor wear hiking boots.
Winter streets and icy paths
Footwear tread alone may not provide enough traction on ice. Visit Reykjanes suggests winter visitors consider ice cleats, ice grips, or anti-slip soles. Whether you need them depends on the surface and conditions.

Glacier trips
Glacier travel is a separate equipment question, not simply a choice between water-resistant and waterproof boots. The Environment Agency warns that glacier tongues can be slippery and that visitors need special equipment and knowledge; it identifies organized trips with experienced guides as the safer option. Follow your tour operator’s specific footwear and equipment requirements.
What “waterproof” and “water-resistant” tell you—and what they do not
The labels are not consistently defined across consumer footwear. In a GORE-TEX article dated 1 July 2016, technical consultant Jonathan Swegle said, “There are no agreed upon footwear industry standards for water-repellent, water-resistant, or waterproof footwear.” That makes the label a useful starting point, not a universal performance rating.

ISO 17702:2003 is a more specific reference: it describes a method for testing footwear upper materials’ resistance to water penetration while flexing, to assess suitability for an end use. ISO says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. It is a test method for a defined property; it does not make all retail waterproof labels directly comparable.
GORE-TEX describes its own whole-footwear assessment, which includes a walking simulation in a water bath, leak testing, and tests of components for wicking. That is the brand’s testing approach, not an independent universal standard or proof that all footwear sold as waterproof performs alike.

Compare the factors that matter for your trip
- Exposure: Think about likely rain, waterfall spray, and how long you expect to be outside.
- Surface: Check whether your route is paved, muddy, rocky, or potentially icy; choose tread that suits the ground.
- Duration and support: A short stop and a long hike put different demands on comfort and support. There is no single boot height prescribed for every route.
- Season: Consider the forecast and the possibility of ice, rather than treating a season label as a substitute for current conditions.
- Fit: Choose footwear that fits securely and comfortably for the activity you plan to do.
- Activity requirements: A hike, glacier excursion, or other guided activity may have specific preparation or equipment needs; check the relevant guidance or ask the operator.
What to pack based on your plans
If your plans include wet outdoor routes, longer walks, or hikes, waterproof hiking boots are a sensible category to consider. Match their grip, support, fit, and insulation to your route and season rather than choosing by the waterproof label alone. If winter conditions make ice likely, shoe traction aids such as slip-on ice cleats may be useful; they are not automatically needed for every visit.
For a trip focused on paved urban sightseeing and short outings in mild, dry conditions, comfortable water-resistant shoes may be adequate. Reassess if the forecast, route, or activity changes. For current conditions and activity-specific advice, consult the Environment Agency of Iceland’s safety guidance, the Ferðafélag Íslands hiking equipment advice, and Visit Reykjanes’ seasonal packing guidance. Conditions, access, and alerts can change, so check again close to travel.
