For a small remote office, start with the WatchGuard Firebox T25; for a branch of roughly 20 users, compare the T45; and for a busy site of up to 50 employees, consider the T85. Larger rackmount deployments can start by comparing the M290 and M390. Those user counts are vendor sizing guidance—not capacity guarantees. Choose by expected inspected traffic, VPN workload, interfaces, remote-access requirements, licensing, and support, not by headline firewall throughput alone.

Which WatchGuard Firebox do I need?

Use the following models as starting points. WatchGuard’s “ideal for” user counts help narrow the choice, but a site with heavy simultaneous traffic, extensive inspection, or many VPN users may need more capacity than its headcount suggests.

Model Vendor’s user guidance UTM full-scan HTTPS full-scan VPN throughput Mobile VPN tunnels Branch-office VPN tunnels
Firebox T25 5 users 403 Mbps 216 Mbps 1.02 Gbps UDP (1518-byte packets); 300 Mbps IMIX 10 10
Firebox T45 20 users 557 Mbps 301 Mbps 1.58 Gbps UDP (1518-byte packets); 460 Mbps IMIX 30 30
Firebox T85 50 users 943 Mbps 576 Mbps 2.04 Gbps UDP (1518-byte packets); 680 Mbps IMIX 60 60

All figures in this table are WatchGuard-published comparison specifications; the comparison page is undated and was accessed in 2026. WatchGuard says its rates use multiple flows through multiple ports and vary with environment and configuration. They are not independent benchmarks or a promise of throughput in a particular installation. See WatchGuard’s Firebox comparison.

Small remote office or virtual office: T25

WatchGuard positions the T25 for a few users and straightforward networking, including a remote virtual office or home. Its wireless models use Wi-Fi 6. The vendor lists 10 mobile-user VPN tunnels and 10 branch-office VPN tunnels; those are separate limits for different VPN uses. If several people will use inspected HTTPS traffic or VPN at once, size from the relevant throughput figures and workload rather than treating the five-user guidance as a guarantee.

Small-to-midsize branch: T45

The T45 is the next comparison point for about 20 users. It provides higher listed full-scan and VPN capacity than the T25 and supports 30 mobile-user and 30 branch-office VPN tunnels. Hardware variants matter: WatchGuard identifies Wi-Fi 6 options, PoE+ on specified variants, and a T45-CW with built-in 5G cellular. Check the exact suffix and included features on the quote or listing; “T45” alone may not identify the configuration you need.

Busy or larger branch: T85

WatchGuard positions the T85 for up to 50 employees or a busy, high-traffic site. It has eight 1 Gb interfaces, with optional SFP+ or 4G/LTE expansion options listed in the comparison. Its published VPN tunnel figures are 60 for mobile users and 60 for branch-office VPNs. Confirm that the port layout and any expansion option fit the intended uplinks, LAN, and failover design.

Rackmount and higher-capacity deployments: M290 or M390

For rackmount deployment and greater capacity, WatchGuard’s comparison lists the M290 for 75 users and the M390 for 250 users. Their listed UTM full-scan rates are 1.18 Gbps and 2.4 Gbps, respectively; VPN throughput using UDP 1518-byte packets is 2.4 Gbps and 5.2 Gbps. The listed mobile VPN limits are 75 and 250. These are vendor comparison figures, not a recommendation by headcount alone. The comparison’s listed mobile VPN limits do not establish branch-office VPN limits, so verify that requirement separately. See WatchGuard’s M-series comparison.

How should I compare Firebox capacity?

WatchGuard’s headline firewall rate is not enough to predict how a device will perform with security inspection and remote access enabled. Compare the metrics that match the traffic the appliance will actually handle.

  • Performance and scale: UTM up to 710 Mbps with inspection on; flexible VPN topologies for hub and spoke or mesh designs.
  • HTTPS and UTM inspection: Full-scan rates are more relevant than an uninspected firewall headline when the deployment will inspect encrypted or security-filtered traffic. For example, WatchGuard lists HTTPS full-scan rates of 216, 301, and 576 Mbps for the T25, T45, and T85, respectively, on its undated comparison page accessed in 2026.
  • VPN traffic mix: The comparison provides VPN rates for both UDP 1518-byte packets and IMIX. Packet mix affects the comparison, so match the metric to the workload where possible rather than treating one figure as universal VPN speed.
  • Concurrent users and applications: User guidance is a planning anchor. Many simultaneous calls, cloud apps, downloads, or inspected sessions can create a different load from the same number of light users.
  • Tunnel type and count: Mobile VPN is for individual remote users; branch-office VPN is for site-to-site connections. A model’s limit in one category does not answer the other category’s requirement.
  • Interfaces and optional hardware: Check the exact need for LAN and WAN ports, Wi-Fi, PoE, cellular failover, and expansion. A model that meets throughput needs may still be the wrong variant for the site design.

Which Firebox is best for remote users and a branch office?

For remote employees connecting individually, compare the mobile VPN tunnel limit with the number of users who may connect at the same time, then assess VPN throughput and inspected traffic. For a branch linking to another office, check the branch-office VPN tunnel allowance separately. A device can have adequate user-VPN capacity but not meet the site-to-site tunnel requirement, or vice versa.

If browser-based access to internal resources is part of the plan, verify Access Portal support rather than assuming every Firebox and license includes it. WatchGuard describes Access Portal as clientless access for web applications, RDP and SSH sessions, and internal applications through a browser. Its documentation lists the T45 and T85 with Standard Support, Basic Security Suite, or Total Security Suite; other model groups can have different license requirements. Access Portal connections must use TLS 1.2 or higher. Confirm the exact model, license, and Fireware release before relying on the feature. Read WatchGuard’s Access Portal documentation.

What should I check before buying?

  1. Estimate the real workload. Record expected concurrent users, inspected traffic, applications, VPN users, and site-to-site links. Use inspected throughput and the relevant VPN figures as comparison points.
  2. Choose the physical configuration. Match port count and speed, Wi-Fi, PoE, cellular, and expansion options to the site. Verify the full model name and suffix in the quote.
  3. Confirm software and remote-access compatibility. Check that the exact device and Fireware release support the intended feature. WatchGuard’s Fireware v12.12 release notes list the T25, T45, T85, M290, and M390 among supported models; that is version-specific information, not a guarantee for every release. Check the Fireware v12.12 release notes.
  4. Price the required support and security suite with the appliance. Verify the license term, support level, and services included in the item being quoted. Hardware price alone may not represent the cost of the coverage or features the deployment needs. Check the current licensing guide and support terms for the specific model and region. Review WatchGuard’s licensing guides.
  5. Verify supply and lifecycle. Confirm regional availability, seller authorization, product lifecycle, and replacement options before ordering. WatchGuard comparison pages still show some older models for reference only; their presence is not evidence that they are currently sold or supported. For used or existing equipment, establish lifecycle, software support, licensing, and replacement availability independently. Check the comparison page for legacy labels.

Are older Firebox models still good buying choices?

Not just because they appear in a product comparison. WatchGuard labels models including the T50/T50-W and T70 “No longer being sold, for comparison purposes only.” Do not treat them as current purchase recommendations. If evaluating used hardware or an installed device, verify its lifecycle status, current Fireware support, licensing eligibility, and replacement path for the relevant region before committing.
