Short answer: A VPN does not guarantee access to US streaming services from Australia. Peacock lists availability in the United States and specified US territories, not Australia; YouTube TV says international travelers cannot access programs and warns that a VPN or proxy can prevent some streams. Netflix and Paramount+ have Australian services, but their catalogs and rules do not promise access to US titles. Check whether a specific show is licensed locally before treating a VPN as the solution.
What “requires a VPN” really means
There is no reliable list of services that “require” a VPN and will therefore work once you connect one. A VPN can change the apparent network location, but it cannot provide streaming rights, an eligible account, or a verified home location. Services may also check device location or restrict VPN use. Their official guidance describes availability and rules—not guaranteed VPN playback.
Separate three questions: Is the service offered in Australia? Is the US show licensed for its Australian catalog? And do the service’s territory, account, travel, and location rules permit your viewing situation? A local version of a brand does not necessarily carry the same shows as its US version.
Service-by-service guide for Australians
| Service | Australian service | What official guidance says | What that means for US TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Yes; Netflix says its library varies by country and changes periodically. | With a VPN, you may see only titles Netflix has licensed worldwide. Netflix also provides help for VPN/proxy error messages. | A VPN is not a dependable way to get the US catalog. Check whether the specific title is available in Australia. |
| Peacock | Australia is not among the territories listed on Peacock’s availability page. | Peacock says it is available in the United States and specified US territories. The page does not establish that a VPN will work elsewhere. | Peacock is a clear example of a US-territory service, but its availability page is not a promise of VPN access from Australia. |
| YouTube TV | Not listed as an Australian service; Google describes it as available throughout the United States. | Google says international travelers cannot access programs. It also says some content cannot be streamed while connected to a VPN or proxy. Access depends on home area, current location, and device location permissions. | A VPN is not a supported workaround; home-area and location checks matter as well as network location. |
| Paramount+ | Yes; Australia has its own Paramount+ service. | Australian terms say subscribers generally must be in the territory where they subscribed and prohibit VPN use to circumvent geographic restrictions. | The local service does not establish US-catalog parity, and using a VPN to bypass geographic restrictions conflicts with the Australian terms. |
| Other major brands | ACMA lists Apple TV, BINGE, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount+, Prime Video, and Stan among services regulated for the 2026 reporting year. | The listing confirms local offerings for those brands, not that every US show is available or that catalogs match. | Search the Australian service’s catalog for the particular show rather than assuming a US listing applies. |
How to check whether a US show is available in Australia
- Search the Australian service first. Look up the exact show and, where relevant, its season. Catalogs vary by country and can change.
- Confirm which service holds the Australian rights. A show associated with Peacock, YouTube TV, or another US platform may have a different Australian distributor—or may not be available locally.
- Read the service’s territory and travel rules. Check the rules for your subscription country and situation, especially if you are traveling or trying to watch a service from another territory.
- Check location requirements before troubleshooting your network. YouTube TV, for example, relies on home area, current location, and device location permissions; changing an IP address does not satisfy every check.
- Treat VPN errors as a service restriction, not proof that you need a different VPN. Netflix publishes guidance for VPN/proxy errors, while YouTube TV warns that a connected VPN or proxy can prevent some content from streaming.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do
A VPN routes traffic through a network endpoint and may change the IP-based location a service sees. That is not the same as having the right to watch a program in Australia or satisfying a service’s account and device checks. A VPN subscription or router cannot create streaming rights, make an ineligible account eligible, or establish a verified home area.
