Yes. Wasmer’s Swift SDK targets iOS 27 and later, letting Swift apps run WebAssembly packages in local sandboxes on the device. Wasmer’s September 23, 2026 announcement names Python, Node.js and FFmpeg among its demonstrations. Which workloads and features are available depends on the runtime backend and the capabilities exposed by the SDK.
What Wasmer’s iOS support means
Wasmer announced its Swift SDK targets for iOS 27 onwards and macOS on September 23, 2026. The Swift bindings give an app a way to create a sandbox, load a package, execute commands, stream output, and read or write files locally. This is an embedded runtime approach: the app can run supported WebAssembly workloads on-device rather than sending every task to a server.

Wasmer Founder and CEO Syrus Akbary described the announcement as adding iOS (27 onwards) and macOS as SDK targets through Swift bindings. The announcement also presents WasmerShell, a native iOS terminal demonstration that installs dependencies and runs packages on the device.
Which Wasmer backends work on iOS?
The runtime backend determines how WebAssembly code is executed. Wasmer’s current feature table marks two backends as iOS-capable and three as unsupported:

Wasmer says iOS JIT restrictions make it challenging to ship a compiler. For the relevant execution path, its approach uses an engine already available through WebKit instead of shipping a WebAssembly compiler or interpreter. The feature table still matters when choosing a backend: it identifies V8 and Browser as the iOS-capable options, rather than treating every Wasmer backend as interchangeable.
This builds on earlier iOS work. Wasmer 5.0, announced October 29, 2024, had bindings for V8, Wasmi and WAMR in an interpreted mode. The 2026 Swift SDK adds a Swift-facing API on top of that runtime work.

What can an app run locally?
Wasmer’s official examples show several kinds of workloads:
- Python: standard-library servers and frameworks including Flask, Django and FastAPI.
- Node.js: programs such as a small HTTP server, with Express and Next.js examples.
- Command-line tools: FFmpeg and yt-dlp.
- Packages in a terminal interface: WasmerShell demonstrates installing dependencies and running packages on an iOS device.
These are demonstrations, not a guarantee that every package or dependency will work on iOS. The SDK shares an API across platforms, but optional features can differ. Wasmer specifically points developers to wasmer.capabilities to check for capabilities such as terminal support, directory mounts and HTTP previews before relying on them.

How developers add the Swift SDK
Wasmer’s SDK repository documents Swift Package Manager support for macOS and iOS 27 or later. Its Swift integration uses a UniFFI facade, and the repository notes that iPhone execution requires an iOS-capable backend. In practice, the deployment target and backend choice are both relevant: a Swift package integration alone does not make an unsupported backend usable on iOS.

Wasmer reports a score of 20,408 on the richards.js benchmark, approximately 5% below the native JavaScript environment on a desktop. This is a vendor-reported result in Wasmer’s launch post, not an independent test, and it is desktop evidence—not an iPhone performance measurement. It should not be used to predict how a particular app or workload will perform on iOS.
