No—not by lifetime sales. Nintendo reports 101.63 million Wii consoles sold worldwide, alongside 921.85 million Wii software units. Those totals make “commercial failure” a poor description of the console’s overall reach. The more complicated story is its later slowdown and the challenge of moving a huge audience to Wii U; neither, by itself, proves the Wii failed.

What does “Wii failed” mean?

Failure can mean several different things: weak lifetime sales, declining sales late in a product’s life, disappointing profit, or failure to achieve a particular strategic goal. The available figures answer the lifetime-sales question clearly. They do not establish the Wii’s lifetime profit or whether Nintendo met every strategic objective.

Nintendo’s worldwide consolidated sales page reports life-to-date totals as of June 30, 2026. Hardware and software totals show reach, not profit, customer satisfaction, or how well the console performed in every year of its lifespan.

How many Wii consoles and games did Nintendo sell?

Console Worldwide hardware units Worldwide software units
Wii 101.63 million 921.85 million
Wii U 13.56 million 103.60 million

These are Nintendo’s consolidated worldwide life-to-date sales figures, with data as of June 30, 2026, not a measure of profit. The Wii U figures provide context for the successor’s much smaller sales total; they do not change the Wii’s lifetime result. Nintendo: Dedicated Video Game Sales Units.

Did the Wii lose momentum?

Yes, its later lifecycle was not the same as its peak period. Contemporary analysis of Nintendo financial-report data described sales trends weakening after successor systems launched, while Wii sales continued after Wii U arrived and Wii software support and momentum were declining. That is evidence of a slowdown, not proof that the console was a failure across its entire lifespan. Nintendo Life’s 2013 analysis of Wii and DS sales trends.

Why was the Wii-to-Wii U transition difficult?

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said in a 2015 TIME interview that the Wii’s huge audience made it hard to persuade players to move to the next system: “The point that I was trying to get across was that Wii has sold so much and is being played by so many people, it’s not going to be easy to make them leave that and come to the next system.”

That comment supports a specific point: Nintendo viewed the scale and continued use of the Wii audience as a transition challenge. It is not a full causal explanation for Wii U’s sales, nor does it mean the Wii itself failed. TIME’s 2015 interview with Tatsumi Kimishima.

Does the Wii U’s financial performance prove the Wii was unprofitable?

No. Reporting on Nintendo’s 2013–14 results attributed Wii U operating losses in part to hardware markdowns and insufficient growth in high-margin software sales. Those are claims about Wii U, not evidence of the Wii’s lifetime profitability. The two consoles should not be treated as one financial result. What does the Wii Shop Channel closure tell us?

Nintendo closed the Wii Shop Channel to new purchases on January 30, 2019, after more than twelve years of operation. Nintendo said customers had shifted toward the eShop on Switch and 3DS. That closure reflects a change in purchasing and support priorities; it does not mean all Wii games stopped working. The cited support page does not establish the current availability of remaining services such as redownloads. Nintendo Support: Wii Shop Channel discontinuation.

Verdict: a major commercial success with a more difficult handoff

Calling the Wii a failure does not fit its reported lifetime sales. The more precise account is that it reached a very large worldwide audience, later lost momentum, and left Nintendo with the challenge of moving many players to Wii U. The Wii U’s lower sales and reported financial difficulties belong to the successor’s story; they do not erase the Wii’s own lifetime outcome.
