The claim that NVIDIA delayed the GeForce RTX 5070 to counter AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 launch was an attributed rumor, not a confirmed explanation from NVIDIA. Tom’s Hardware reported on February 12, 2025, that a post by MEGAsizeGPU said RTX 5070 retail availability had shifted from February to early March. NVIDIA later confirmed the card was available on March 5, 2025.
Was the RTX 5070 delayed to counter AMD?
That was the theory attached to the reported schedule change, but the evidence cited at the time did not establish NVIDIA’s motive. Tom’s Hardware reported that MEGAsizeGPU had posted: “The RTX5070 will be delayed. Instead of February, it will be on the shelf in early March.” The suggestion that the shift was intended to respond to AMD was market speculation, not an explanation NVIDIA confirmed.

The timing made the theory plausible to observers: AMD announced its Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on February 28, 2025, after the RTX 5070 delay report and shortly before NVIDIA’s stated availability date. The sequence alone does not prove that AMD’s launch caused NVIDIA to change its schedule.
When did the RTX 5070 actually launch?
| Date | What was reported or announced |
|---|---|
| January 2025 | NVIDIA unveiled the RTX 5070 family and discussed a February launch window, as summarized in Tom’s Hardware’s contemporaneous report. |
| February 12, 2025 | Tom’s Hardware reported MEGAsizeGPU’s allegation that retail availability had moved from February to early March. |
| February 28, 2025 | AMD announced the RDNA 4 Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070. |
| March 5, 2025 | NVIDIA said the RTX 5070 was “out now.” Board-partner cards were available; the limited Founders Edition was scheduled for later in March. |
So the confirmed availability date was March 5, 2025, rather than the originally discussed February window. NVIDIA’s announcement distinguished partner cards from its limited Founders Edition, which was not scheduled to arrive until later that month.

What RTX 5070 configuration and price were reported?
Tom’s Hardware reported the reference specifications as 48 streaming multiprocessors (SMs), 6,144 CUDA cores, and 12GB of GDDR7 memory on a 192-bit interface, with 672GB/s of memory bandwidth. It reported NVIDIA’s launch MSRP as $549.
That MSRP is a reference price, not proof that every partner model was available at that price or that buyers could find one in stock for $549. Actual availability and retail pricing depend on the specific card and seller; the launch announcements cited here do not establish current stock or prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the launch timeline show which card is faster or the better buy?
No. The announcement dates and reported RTX 5070 specifications do not provide an independent performance comparison with the Radeon RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT. The fact that the products launched close together is not evidence that either card is faster or offers better value.
For a buying decision, compare current prices and stock for the exact models available to you, then look at benchmarks for the games and workloads you use. Relevant differences include raster performance, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation features, VRAM capacity, power requirements and connectors, and compatibility with creator applications or other software you rely on. Without comparable test results for those workloads, a blanket recommendation between the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 series would not be supported.
