Nintendo says the released console uses a custom-made NVIDIA processor. The two stories are easy to conflate because Samsung does use AMD RDNA graphics technology in some Exynos chips, but that separate partnership is not evidence Nintendo adopted it.
Where did the Samsung and AMD Switch rumor come from?
On May 8, 2020, HotHardware published a report saying Nintendo might use a hybrid Samsung/AMD system-on-chip in its next-generation Switch. The headline framed the idea as an allegation, and the article described Nintendo as “tipped” to be a partner. It did not name the source of the tip or cite confirmation from Nintendo. That makes the claim a historical speculation, not a confirmed design announcement. At the time, it was a proposed possibility for a future console; it should not be presented as a specification for a product Nintendo later released.
What processor does the released Nintendo Switch 2 use?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, and released it on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s product information identifies its processor as custom-made by NVIDIA. The official UK specifications page does not disclose a detailed chip model or fabrication node, so more specific claims about the processor should not be treated as official specifications. This evidence answers what happened to the specific 2020 rumor: it was not the hardware description for the released Switch 2. It does not establish what Nintendo might choose for any future product.
Why Samsung and AMD seemed like a plausible pairing
The Samsung/AMD connection is real in a different context. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report describes RDNA-based Xclipse graphics in its Exynos product range, including the Xclipse 550, based on AMD RDNA 3, in the Exynos 1680. Samsung Electronics 2026 first-quarter interim report.

That demonstrates a technical collaboration between Samsung and AMD; it does not demonstrate a Nintendo deal. A real partnership in one company’s chip products cannot confirm an unattributed report about another company’s console. Nor do the available sources establish that the rumored Samsung/AMD configuration was ever completed or tested for Nintendo.
What Nintendo has disclosed about Switch 2 hardware
Nintendo’s public specifications give useful product-level details, but they do not amount to a full chip datasheet. The company lists maximum TV output of 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, with support for 120 fps at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440. Those are supported output modes, not independent performance benchmarks or a guarantee that every game runs at each resolution and frame rate. Nintendo’s technical director Tetsuya Sasaki was reported by Tom’s Hardware as saying, “Nintendo doesn’t share too much on the hardware spec.” Tom’s Hardware report on the April 2025 developer roundtable.

At that same roundtable, Nintendo director Takuhiro Dohta was reported as confirming DLSS upscaling and hardware ray-tracing capability for Switch 2. Those are features attributed to the released NVIDIA-based console, not evidence for the earlier Samsung/AMD rumor. Developers may choose whether to render at a lower resolution and upscale, so the console’s maximum output figure should not be mistaken for the native resolution of every game.
- Game cards: Switch 2 supports Nintendo Switch 2 game cards and Nintendo Switch game cards.
- Storage expansion: Nintendo lists microSD Express cards for additional storage. Non-Express microSD cards can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch, according to Nintendo’s product information.
- Battery: The official UK specifications page lists two battery variants, one user-replaceable and one not, and estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life. Nintendo cautions that runtime varies with the game and conditions of use; these details are specific to the UK page and should not be generalized to every regional variant.
Was the Samsung AMD Switch rumor true?
Not as a description of the Switch 2 Nintendo released in 2025. The rumor proposed Samsung and AMD RDNA hardware in 2020, while Nintendo’s later product information identifies a custom NVIDIA processor. Samsung’s separate use of AMD RDNA graphics in Exynos chips explains why the pairing was technically conceivable, but it does not change the evidence for Nintendo’s released console.
