The most reliable beginner plan in Wartales is to build a company around jobs, not a universal tier list. Pick a frontline class that can safely engage enemies, add damage from a second angle, keep at least one fragile ranged companion out of contact, and recruit only when the new role fills a real gap. Class determines a companion’s weapons, specializations, and skill-tree access; level milestones then let you shape that companion into a tank, damage dealer, support fighter, or utility specialist.
What classes do in Wartales
Wartales is an open-world role-playing game in which you lead a mercenary company, recruit companions, accept contracts, and customize both combat skills and camp development. The official game page describes it this way: “Wartales is an open world RPG in which you lead a group of mercenaries in their search for wealth across a massive medieval universe.” That premise matters mechanically: you are managing a roster and an economy as much as you are moving individual units on a battle map.
A companion’s class is the starting frame for that management. It influences the weapons the companion can use effectively, the specializations available to them, and the class skill tree from which later choices are made. It does not, by itself, dictate a finished build. Equipment, attributes, professions, companions recruited later, and the skills you select at each milestone all change how the same class functions.

The six classes commonly presented as starting choices by an older Steam Community beginner guide are Swordsman, Warrior, Spearman, Brute, Ranger, and Archer. That guide associates Swordsman, Warrior, Spearman, and Brute with Strength, and Ranger and Archer with Dexterity. Treat that list as an orientation to the starting roster rather than a current ranking: balance changes and recruit variations can make a specific class or opening skill look different in your version.

What are the best starting classes for a beginner in Wartales?
There is no single best class without defining your difficulty, preferred party size, combat style, and game version. A safer beginner question is: which class gives me a job I understand and a role my company currently lacks?
| Class | Broad orientation in the community guide | Good beginner use | What to check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swordsman | Strength-based frontline | Anchor a fight, occupy an enemy, or develop toward damage | Whether its current weapon and opening skills reward engagement or a more aggressive position |
| Warrior | Strength-based damage or tank role | Add a durable melee threat beside your first frontline companion | Whether your selected skills make it a control piece or a finisher; do not duplicate a role accidentally |
| Spearman | Strength-based support and reach | Support an engagement from a safer tile and contribute without crowding the frontline | Range, area coverage, and Action Point costs in the current tooltips |
| Brute | Strength-based damage or tank role | Provide a second heavy body when enemies overwhelm a single anchor | Armor, movement, and whether the chosen weapon makes it a focused attacker or a control unit |
| Ranger | Dexterity-based damage | Finish an engaged target or reach a vulnerable enemy from an angle | How safely it can enter and leave contact; a damage role still needs a retreat path |
| Archer | Dexterity-based ranged damage | Apply pressure while frontline companions hold enemies away | Line of sight, minimum safe distance, and whether the map gives it room to work |
These descriptions come from the older community guide and are deliberately broad. They are not official developer roles or a promise that one class outperforms another. Use them to choose a first function, then read the actual companion’s weapon options and starting skills.
Choose a class by the job you want to perform
- Want a simple frontline anchor? Start with Swordsman, Warrior, or Brute and build for durability and reliable engagement. Your first goal is to keep dangerous enemies occupied, not to maximize a damage number on turn one.
- Want a safer damage plan? Pair a durable melee companion with an Archer or a carefully positioned Ranger. The ranged unit is valuable only while it remains out of unnecessary contact.
- Want formation support? A Spearman can contribute from behind or beside the engagement. Check its current reach and Action Point costs rather than assuming every recruit has the same opening package.
- Already have a strong frontline? Recruit for the missing job instead of adding another copy of the role you already perform well. This is a recommendation from the beginner guide, not a hard game rule.
How Wartales skills and level milestones work
The Game Wiki’s skills reference describes two useful categories:
Recommended Free Tools
- Active skills are actions you select in combat and that consume Action Points or other listed resources. They solve an immediate problem: movement, damage, control, protection, or positioning.
- Passive skills are persistent bonuses or automatic triggers. They shape what happens whenever a condition is met, often without requiring a separate action on your turn.
That reference says each class has its own tree and lists 89 unique skills across nine classes, with one skill selected at each listed tier. The count is a secondary reference’s figure, accessed in 2026, rather than an official publisher statistic. The starting six classes are therefore not the same thing as the nine-class total in that reference.
| Milestone listed by the skill reference | How to use the choice |
|---|---|
| Level 2 | Establish the companion’s first clear job. Prefer a skill that improves the way you intend to take fights, not one that is merely impressive in isolation. |
| Level 5 | Reinforce the role: survivability for an anchor, reliable output for a damage dealer, or positioning and utility for support. |
| Level 8 | Check whether the build still works with your equipment and party. A skill that looked attractive early may compete with another companion’s job now. |
| Level 10 | Invest in the part of the kit you use repeatedly. Action Point costs and the number of turns needed to reach a target matter as much as the listed effect. |
| Level 12 | Cover a weakness exposed by harder encounters, such as poor mobility, weak protection, or a lack of dependable focus damage. |
| Level 15 | Finish the role you actually play. Do not choose a late skill solely because a guide labels it optimal for a different party shape. |
The exact ability text and balance can change. Inspect the current in-game tooltip at every milestone, especially for Action Point requirements, range, conditions, and whether an effect is active or passive. The community guide also notes that some starting skills can vary by recruit, so two companions with the same class should not be assumed to open identically.
Build around roles, not a universal tier list
A useful comparison uses five axes: frontline durability and engagement control; damage delivery (melee, ranged, area, or focused); support and utility; weapon and armor preferences; and the skill and Valour Point demands of the plan. These axes are practical ways to compare options, not an official ranking.
Frontline anchor
An anchor is the companion you expect to enter contact with a dangerous enemy and remain functional while doing so. Strength-oriented Swordsmen, Warriors, and Brutes are common starting candidates because the community guide places them in damage or tank categories. Give the anchor a clear approach route, and avoid sending every melee unit into the same tile cluster: an engaged enemy is useful only if your formation can exploit the space it creates.

Second frontline or control piece
A second durable companion prevents one failed engagement from collapsing the whole battle. This can be another heavy class or a Spearman positioned to support the first contact. Its job may be to occupy a second threat, protect an exposed ally, or help finish the target your anchor has pinned. Choose the job explicitly so you do not spend levels and equipment making two companions compete for the same place.
Focused damage
Focused damage removes one enemy quickly, reducing the number of active attacks you must absorb. A Warrior, Brute, or Ranger can fill this slot depending on weapons and current skill options. Prioritize access to the target, a safe exit, and enough Action Points to complete the attack sequence; a theoretical high-damage skill is less useful if the companion cannot reach the enemy without being surrounded.
Ranged pressure
An Archer can apply damage while your frontline holds contact. Keep a clear line of sight and a retreat tile. The beginner guide specifically recommends keeping archers and rangers out of contact when possible. That is a positioning guideline, not an absolute prohibition: if entering contact prevents a larger threat from reaching the rest of the party, make the trade deliberately and have a way to disengage.
Support and utility
Support can mean reach, protection, positioning, or a skill that improves the party’s ability to spend resources efficiently. Spearmen are the broad example in the community guide. Utility is valuable when it solves a problem your other companions cannot; it is less valuable when it duplicates a damage action you already have in abundance.

These are templates for thinking, not prescriptions. Replace any class when a recruit’s actual skills, equipment, or personality make another choice better.
| Party shape | Core jobs | How to play it | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced four-role group | One anchor, one second frontline, one focused melee or Ranger, one Archer | Engage the most dangerous threats with durable units, focus one target, and let the Archer work from safety | Too few bodies if both frontline companions are pulled away at once |
| Durable melee group | Two or three Strength-oriented frontliners plus one support or ranged slot | Occupy several enemies and win through controlled focus fire | Limited reach against enemies that refuse contact or stand behind obstacles |
| Ranged-leaning group | One or two anchors protecting Archer/Ranger damage dealers | Use terrain and engagement control to create turns in which ranged companions attack freely | A flank or movement mistake can expose fragile companions to immediate contact |
When the company grows, add the role that is failing in real fights. If the Archer is repeatedly surrounded, another damage dealer will not solve the problem; you need a better anchor, engagement timing, or a safer route through the map.
A practical early-game route
The Game LB beginner guide recommends beginning in Tiltren County and completing nearby work before pushing into more dangerous areas. It also says regions use fixed difficulty tiers rather than scaling to your party, while roads may be open before your company is ready. Because that is a secondary guide’s claim and encounter balance can change, use the levels shown by current encounters as the final check.

- Start with a manageable roster. Recruit enough companions to cover the first missing combat role, but do not expand simply because a recruit is available. Every additional person increases food and wage pressure.
- Complete nearby contracts in Tiltren. Learn how your chosen anchor engages, how much room your ranged unit needs, and which skills actually consume your Action Points before committing to a larger route.
- Check patrol and encounter levels. The guide specifically advises checking patrol levels. A road being accessible does not mean the current company can win the fight waiting on it.
- Reach several specialization milestones before moving on. The recommendation is to let companions gain several upgrades in the local area rather than leaving at the first opportunity.
- Pause recruitment when upkeep becomes uncomfortable. Keep wages and food sustainable, then add a companion only when the new role is worth the recurring cost.
- Improve the camp early. Assign professions and put early attention into the cooking pot and tent upgrades described below. Confirm their current effects in your version before planning around an exact number.
Combat fundamentals that prevent early wipes
Engage with a purpose
Use a durable companion to occupy a threat when doing so protects the rest of the formation. Engagement is not merely a way to deal damage; it determines which enemies can freely walk toward your vulnerable units. Place the anchor where the enemy has a reason to stay and where allies can reach the target without creating a new opening.

Keep Archers and Rangers out of contact whenever the map allows. Before moving one into range, identify the enemy that can reach it next turn, the tile it can retreat to, and whether another companion can intercept. A damage turn that leaves the unit surrounded is often a poor trade even when the attack lands.
Focus one target
The beginner guide recommends focusing enemies so fewer remain active. Concentrate attacks on a threat that is engaged, isolated, or capable of reaching your back line. Removing one enemy generally reduces incoming actions more reliably than spreading light damage across the entire opposing group.
Hold Valour Points for a decisive turn
The guide advises saving Valour Points rather than spending them immediately. Treat that as a practical recommendation: preserve the resource when an ordinary action is sufficient, then spend it to finish a priority enemy, rescue a threatened companion, or swing a turn in which several attacks can connect.
Retreat when the fight is going bad
Withdrawal is a strategic option, not a failure of the build. If the enemy has surrounded your anchor, your ranged units have lost safe tiles, or the remaining target priority is no longer achievable, retreating can preserve the company and its equipment. Re-enter with better positioning, more supplies, or a different contract order.
What professions should beginners take in Wartales?
The Game LB guide highlights Cook, Blacksmith, Miner, and Alchemist as useful early assignments. Professions level through use, so it recommends assigning them early and avoiding needless shuffling. The best first choice still depends on party size, injuries, equipment needs, and how often you are traveling.
| Profession | Why the beginner guide values it | When it deserves priority |
|---|---|---|
| Cook | Improves food economy and supports sustainable rests | Your company is growing, resting often, or spending too much money replacing food |
| Blacksmith | Helps with equipment maintenance and related gear work | Companions are fighting frequently and equipment upkeep is limiting your route |
| Miner | Provides mining income and materials | You have accessible mining opportunities and need funds for wages or upgrades |
| Alchemist | Supports injury care and related consumables | Injuries or recovery items are slowing the company more than raw income is |
Do not rotate a companion through every profession just to sample them. You delay the leveling benefit when you constantly reassign, and the company loses the advantage of having a specialist who is already practiced at a job.

Camp upgrades, food, and company size
The same guide recommends early attention to the cooking pot and tent. It reports that a tier 2 cooking pot saves four food per rest and that a tier 3 tent grants one Valour Point at the start of battle. Those are guide-reported mechanics, not permanent guarantees: check the current upgrade tooltip and patch notes in your edition before treating either figure as fixed.
- Food first when rests are the bottleneck. A larger roster that cannot afford regular rests will perform worse than a smaller, well-supplied company.
- Wages are a recurring commitment. Keep enough income for the next payroll cycle before recruiting another companion.
- Use camp space to support the formation. Upgrades that improve rest efficiency or combat resources matter because they reduce the number of compromises you make between contracts.
- Match growth to your route. A company that can defeat local patrols may still be under-equipped for the next region if its armor, professions, and specialization milestones lag behind.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Chasing a tier list
Symptom: You select a class because it is called optimal, then discover that your weapons, recruit skills, or party size do not support the recommendation.
Fix: Define the role first and compare candidates by durability, damage delivery, utility, equipment, and resource demands. Re-read the actual tooltip on the companion you recruited.
Sending every melee companion forward
Symptom: Your frontline blocks itself while enemies walk around it toward the Archer.
Fix: Give each melee unit a target and a lane. Keep at least one route open for ranged attacks and a retreat tile for fragile companions.
Recruiting faster than the economy can support
Symptom: Food and wages consume the money that should fund camp improvements or equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix: Pause recruitment until the current company can rest comfortably and complete contracts. Spending Valour Points automatically
Symptom: The resource is empty when an enemy must be finished or a companion must be saved.
Fix: Hold Valour Points through ordinary turns and spend them when they change target priority, survival, or the number of attacks you can complete.
Assuming every recruit starts the same
Symptom: A class guide’s opening sequence does not match the companion in your roster.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Fix: Inspect that recruit’s starting skills and weapon options. The community guide reports variation, so treat any generic opening as a plan to adapt rather than a script.
Leaving the opening region too soon
Symptom: The next road is open, but patrols defeat the company before its members have several specialization choices.
Fix: Finish nearby Tiltren work, check encounter levels, improve camp support, and move only when your formation can handle the displayed threats.
How to keep builds current after an update
Class balance, skill wording, and resource costs are patch-sensitive. Before copying a build from an older guide, verify the in-game tooltip for the skill, the Action Point requirement, the weapon interaction, and the condition that triggers any passive effect. Recheck recruit-specific starting skills rather than assuming the class name guarantees a fixed opening. When a recommendation conflicts with the current tooltip, the tooltip and current official patch information should control your decision.
Use guides as role explanations and planning aids, not as proof that one class is universally superior. A party that reliably engages threats, protects its ranged damage, focuses targets, and keeps food and wages under control will usually teach you more about Wartales than a copied list of supposedly perfect choices.
A simple decision rule for your next recruit
- Identify the fight problem you cannot currently solve: surviving contact, reaching a target, protecting the back line, dealing focused damage, or sustaining the company.
- Inspect candidates’ classes, weapons, starting skills, and personalities rather than judging by class label alone.
- Choose the recruit whose job is distinct from the jobs already covered.
- Plan the next skill milestone around that job, then adjust when the actual tooltip or equipment makes another option better.
- Recruit only when the company can pay the added food and wages without delaying essential camp or equipment work.
That process produces a coherent early party while leaving room to learn the game. It also remains useful when a patch changes an ability or when a randomly generated recruit arrives with a different starting skill.
