In Warhammer, a Chaos champion is a mortal—or former mortal—who gives body and spirit to one Ruinous Power or to Chaos as a whole, earns a patron’s mark or gifts, gathers followers and risks ending as a corpse, a Chaos Spawn or a Daemon Prince. It is a role and a progression, not one boxed army. For a new Age of Sigmar collector in 2026, the clearest entry is Spearhead: Darkoath Raiders; the definitive named centrepiece is Archaon the Everchosen. Your first decision is whether you want a god-specific force, Chaos Undivided and the Everchosen, or the mortal oath-bound culture of the Darkoath.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Darkoath Raiders Spearhead | First champion-led force | 26 miniatures: Warqueen, 5 Fellriders, 10 Savagers and 10 Marauders | Age of Sigmar Spearhead; Slaves to Darkness | Oct 2026 |
| Archaon the Everchosen | Ultimate named centrepiece | Archaon and Dorghar; community list examples use 780 points | Age of Sigmar matched play and narrative play | Oct 2026 |
| Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain | Single-character project | Mortal leader on the Path to Glory | Age of Sigmar; Slaves to Darkness | Oct 2026 |
| God-specific army | Unambiguous allegiance | Blades of Khorne, Maggotkin of Nurgle, Hedonites of Slaanesh or Disciples of Tzeentch | Age of Sigmar | Oct 2026 |
| Warriors of Chaos | Classic armoured look | Chaos Warriors, Knights and chariots; the Bloodwind Legions Spearhead is the example force | The Old World or Slaves to Darkness | Oct 2026 |
Prices and stock change by country and seller. A US launch retail figure for Darkoath Raiders was $145; later US listings were about $123–$156, and one UK listing was about £83.45. Treat those as October 2026 market snapshots, not a guaranteed Games Workshop RRP.
What are Chaos champions in Warhammer?
Across Warhammer Fantasy, The Old World and Age of Sigmar, a champion offers service to a Chaos god—or to Chaos Undivided—then proves that loyalty through violence, conquest and sacrifice. A successful champion receives marks, mutations or other gifts, attracts a warband and climbs toward apotheosis. Failure can bring death or transformation into a mindless Chaos Spawn. A champion may be a god-marked warrior, a sorcerer, a named warlord such as Archaon, a Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain, or a leader inside a larger unit.

Chaos existed from the first Warhammer Fantasy Battles in 1983, but the 1990s made the allegiance immediately visible through dedicated armour, trophies, mutations and silhouettes. That design history still informs the best first purchase: decide whose gifts, symbols and battlefield style you want before buying a large collection.

“Chaos was present from the very beginning of Warhammer Fantasy Battles in 1983, but it was the 1990s that ushered in a plethora of new Champion models directly themed to each of the gods.” — Games Workshop, Warhammer Community, 27 October 2026
What factions do Chaos champions belong to?
The four classic gods remain the foundation, while Undivided, the Everchosen and Darkoath provide different kinds of allegiance. Age of Sigmar also has Chaos factions devoted to Hashut and the Great Horned Rat; they are part of the wider alliance but are not the seven miniature families highlighted in the 2026 history.
Khorne
Khorne champions pursue martial aggression, trophies and direct confrontation. Collect them as Blades of Khorne, or use Slaves to Darkness units carrying the Mark of Khorne. Studio commentary describes that mark as a way to make cavalry hit with the force associated with a Bloodcrusher.

Nurgle’s champions spread decay, disease and corrosion, treating physical ruin as a blessing. The dedicated army is Maggotkin of Nurgle; a Slaves to Darkness unit with the Mark of Nurgle is the tougher infantry interpretation described by the studio.
Slaanesh
Slaanesh champions seek excess, sensation and theatrical perfection. Hedonites of Slaanesh give you a fully dedicated army, while the Mark of Slaanesh on Slaves to Darkness represents speed and reaching the decisive fight first.
Tzeentch
Tzeentch champions embrace change, sorcery and unstable transformation. Disciples of Tzeentch are the god-specific army. In the 2024 Slaves to Darkness faction explanation, the Mark of Tzeentch offers protection against enemy spell and manifestation abilities, including a 4+ ward example; check the current faction rules before treating that number as permanent.

Chaos Undivided
Undivided champions serve the pantheon rather than one exclusive god. Archaon and several Slaves to Darkness leaders use this identity. The 2024 faction focus gave an Undivided example that improved wound rolls against Heroes and Monsters, but exact effects are edition-dependent.
The Everchosen
Everchosen is a supreme leadership title, not a fifth god. Archaon holds it after previous contenders failed to unite Chaos as he did. His title places him above ordinary god-marked champions without making him a deity.
Darkoath
Darkoath are Age of Sigmar’s developed mortal marauder culture. Their leaders swear oaths to spirits guarding their territory; those spirits are minor aspects of the Ruinous Powers rather than direct worship of one named god. Darkoath society is kin-bound, proud and hostile to Sigmar’s settlements, making it the most accessible mortal-champion story for a new collector.
“They do not directly worship the Chaos Gods, instead pledging oaths to spirits who guard their territory – and in fact, minor aspects of the Ruinous Powers.” — Games Workshop, Warhammer Community, 18 June 2024
Adjacent Chaos factions
The current Age of Sigmar Chaos navigation also lists Helsmiths of Hashut and Skaven. Hashut’s Chaos Duardin and the Great Horned Rat’s Skaven broaden the alliance; Games Workshop noted in 2024 that the ascension of the Great Horned Rat means five Chaos Gods. Neither replaces the four classic god identities when you are choosing a traditional Chaos champion collection.
Which named champions should I know?
| Figure or group | Power model | Role in the setting |
|---|---|---|
| Archaon | Everchosen; Chaos Undivided; rides Dorghar | Pinnacle of the Path to Glory and ruler from the Varanspire |
| Be’lakor | First Daemon Prince | Denied the Everchosen mantle; manipulates events from the shadows |
| Abraxia, Spear of the Everchosen | Varanguard-raised commander | Named Slaves to Darkness hero; community primers describe her as a solo operator |
| Darkoath Warqueen or Chieftain | Mortal oaths and tribal leadership | Early stage of the climb and the leader of Darkoath Raiders |
| Daemon Prince | Successful dark apotheosis | One possible extreme end of a mortal champion’s journey |
| Chaos Spawn | Failed or cursed gifts | The catastrophic alternative to ascension |
Archaon ended the World-that-Was, retained his power in the Mortal Realms and commands vast armies from the Varanspire in the Allpoints. Be’lakor is not a Chaos God: he was the first Daemon Prince, and his arrogance cost him the Everchosen title. Games Workshop summarizes his fate plainly: “Through his arrogance he was denied the mantle of Everchosen, fated only to crown his successors.”

How do Chaos champion rules work in Age of Sigmar?
The rules express a bargain with the gods. A unit wins glory through battlefield deeds, then risks a reward or curse. The exact warscrolls and points change, so use the current Battletome: Slaves to Darkness, Faction Pack, Battlescroll and Warhammer app for legal details rather than treating a 2024 preview as an eternal rulebook.
The Path to Glory
Every Slaves to Darkness model, from a Darkoath tribesperson to a Chaos Lord, is on a metaphysical Path to Glory. At the end are either daemonhood or ruin. Lore examples include Spawndom, Slaughterer’s Strength, Murderous Mutation, Iron Flesh, Flames of Chaos, Unholy Resilience, Daemonic Legions and Dark Apotheosis, plus god-linked gifts such as Slaanesh’s Quicksilver Reflexes, Nurgle’s Regeneration, Tzeentch’s Third Eye and Khorne’s Weapon Limb.
“From the lowest Darkoath tribesperson to the most powerful Chaos Lord, everyone is on a journey known as a Path to Glory.” — Games Workshop, Warhammer Community, 18 June 2024

Not every Darkoath warrior becomes a Daemon Prince. The gods demand repeated proof, and most champions fail, die or mutate before reaching that summit.
Eye of the Gods and gifts
In the fourth-edition faction explanation, a unit that triumphed over another at the end of a turn could seek a gift unless it was Snubbed by the Gods. Named examples were Mutative Regrowth, Unnatural Grace, Lurid Aura and Slaughterer’s Might. A Champion of Chaos could choose the gift wanted, and the article stated that gifts stack; verify the current battle pack for the live procedure.
Marks of Chaos
A mark declares a unit’s patron and supplies a focused advantage. Khorne suits hard-hitting cavalry, Nurgle rewards durable infantry, Tzeentch answers hostile magic and Slaanesh improves speed or presence. Undivided effects favor fighting enemy Heroes and Monsters. Marks are therefore both a story choice and a list-building decision.

Darkoath Raiders Spearhead rules
The Darkoath Raiders preview gives the Warqueen’s warband a complete small-game identity:
- Oaths to Darkness: once per turn, reveal a battle tactic card as an oath; scoring it keeps the command available without using one of the three cards in hand.
- Rage of Arkhar: add 1 Rend to a unit in combat, excluding Companion weapons.
- Fearless Invaders: a unit can Retreat without mortal damage and still Charge.
- Oath of Supremacy: the Warqueen gives a friendly unit wholly within 12 inches +1 to hit until your next turn.
- Visions of Glory: a Savager unit with a Godspeaker rolls eight dice; each 6 permits one of the listed re-rolls.
- Reinforcements: Marauders can return during the Spearhead game.
Spearhead rules are available as a free Warhammer Community download, and the box supplies a complete Spearhead force. At its 2024 launch it was described as about 500 points for Age of Sigmar matched play; points are edition-volatile.
Where should I start collecting Chaos champions?
- Start with Darkoath Raiders if you want a playable mortal warband. The box contains 26 plastic miniatures—one Warqueen, five Fellriders, ten Savagers and ten Marauders—made from 291 components. Its kit identifier is 70-836 (GW-70-836), barcode 5011921220953. It is the most coherent first purchase for learning Spearhead and later expanding toward a Slaves to Darkness army.
- Choose Archaon if the character matters more than the entry cost. His Dorghar model is the visual and narrative summit of Chaos champion collecting. A Woehammer General’s Handbook 2026–27 list-construction report uses 780 points for Archaon as a general; that is a community figure, not an official app value. He is an expensive centrepiece to build around, not the sensible first box for someone learning the game.
- Buy a single Warqueen or Chieftain for a focused hobby project. The Marakarr Blood-Sky Warqueen kit and Darkoath Chieftain let you practice skin, scars, trophies and weathered equipment without committing to an army. The Warhammer Day 2026 miniature Oath Fulfilled is another scarred Darkoath Warqueen, sold in stores for the Saturday 31 October celebration; it is a timed commemorative release, not the evergreen starter box.
- Pick a god-specific army when the patron is non-negotiable. Start with Blades of Khorne, Maggotkin of Nurgle, Hedonites of Slaanesh or Disciples of Tzeentch if every model should advertise one god. This route gives a stronger visual and narrative identity than a mixed Darkoath force.
- Choose Warriors of Chaos for the classic plate-armour silhouette. Chaos Warriors, Knights and chariots fit Slaves to Darkness and The Old World. The Bloodwind Legions Spearhead, featuring a Chaos Lord, Knights, Chariot and Warriors, is the armoured counterpart to Darkoath Raiders.
- Leave Daemon Princes and Chaos Spawn for later. A Daemon Prince represents the desired apotheosis; a Spawn kit represents the warning that the gods’ gifts can go wrong. They make excellent additions once your mortal warband has a story.
What is in the Darkoath Raiders box?
The 26-model mix is deliberately varied: mounted Fellriders provide mobility, Savagers supply aggressive infantry and Marauders add bodies that can return through Reinforcements in Spearhead. The Warqueen is both general and narrative anchor. Retail listings identify the box as “Warhammer Darkoath Raiders – Slaves to Darkness Spearhead Age of Sigmar”; check current seller stock and regional pricing before ordering.
How should I expand after Spearhead?
Play the free Spearhead rules first, then add units that support the story you chose—more Darkoath for infantry waves, marked Chaos Warriors for a disciplined host, or a Daemon Prince for the apotheosis theme. Move to Battletome: Slaves to Darkness when you are planning a 2,000-point army, and recheck the General’s Handbook 2026–27 and the latest Battlescroll, dated 23 September 2026 in the current season.
What does current Slaves to Darkness play look like?
Woehammer’s primer, updated 28 October 2026, describes three broad community styles rather than official classifications: Darkoath infantry waves, Daemon Prince or monster builds, and “Herohammer” armies centered on Archaon or Be’lakor. The same primer mentions Darkoath lists using Gunnar Brand, Savagers and a Daemon Prince. These are competitive observations, not Games Workshop win-rate data, and formations and points can change with the next Battlescroll.

How are Fantasy Chaos champions different from 40,000 Chaos Space Marines?
They share gods but not armies, technology or setting. Fantasy and Age of Sigmar champions are mortal warlords, marauders, sorcerers and daemon ascendants using oaths, marks and the Path to Glory. In Warhammer 40,000, a “champion” usually means a traitor Space Marine specialist: an Aspiring Champion leading Legionaries, a Terminator or Possessed Champion, a Plague Champion, Skull Champion or Exalted Champion. Power armour, boltguns and 40k detachment rules do not belong in a Darkoath army.

June 2026 coverage of the 11th-edition Chaos Faction Packs lists 40k detachments such as Cabal of Chaos, Devotees of Destruction and Murdertalon Raiders. Archaon’s Dorghar, Darkoath oaths and the Path to Glory are fantasy concepts, even though Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch appear in both universes.
Is this the 2018 Warhammer Champions card game?
No. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Champions was a separate living-card game. Its 2 August 2018 comprehensive rules used 38-card constructed decks, four Champion cards kept separate and four Alliances—Chaos, Death, Destruction and Order. A question about plastic Chaos miniatures, Spearhead or Archaon concerns the tabletop settings, not that card game.
How should I choose between Darkoath, a god and the Everchosen?
- Patron: choose one god for a single visual language, Undivided or Everchosen for pan-Chaos authority, or Darkoath spirits for mortal tribal identity.
- First purchase: 26-model Spearhead, one Warqueen, or a large Archaon monster each implies a different budget and painting workload.
- Game: Spearhead is the compact entry mode; matched play needs current points; Path to Glory emphasizes campaign narrative; The Old World and 40k use different rules.
- Look: decide between barbarian flesh and trophies, hellforged plate, daemonic transformation or 40k baroque power armour.
- End state: a Warqueen is still climbing, Archaon is already at the summit and Be’lakor is the denied rival working from the shadows.
How should I paint a Chaos champion?
Begin with the sculpt’s story: Darkoath models reward weathered skin, scars, furs and trophies; god-marked warriors reward a restricted palette and repeated symbols; Archaon rewards patient work on armour, dragon-like details and Dorghar. Games Workshop promoted Oath Fulfilled as a subject for its Warhammer Tone Pro range. Citadel paints are the straightforward hobby choice; retailer recipes such as a Wraithbone undercoat with Contrast paint are suggestions, not mandatory studio formulas.
How did we pick these starting points?
The recommendations follow the evidence available for October 2026: a complete 26-model Spearhead force for a first game, a named character for a centrepiece, god-specific armies for uncompromising allegiance, armoured Spearhead options for classic Chaos aesthetics and the current distinction between mortal champions, daemonhood and failure. Prices, points, stock and rules are treated as changeable rather than permanent specifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chaos champion be a sorcerer instead of a warrior?
Yes. A Lexicanum overview defines a Champion of Chaos as either a warrior or a sorcerer devoted to a particular god or to Chaos Undivided. The model’s battlefield role can therefore differ from the heavy-armour champion archetype without changing the underlying pledge.
What does “Snubbed by the Gods” mean?
It is the negative condition used in the Eye of the Gods explanation: a unit that is Snubbed cannot claim the gift that would otherwise follow its triumph. The exact trigger and test belong to the current faction rules, so use the latest Battletome or Faction Pack for the legal wording.
Why is Archaon called Grand Marshal of the Apocalypse?
The title describes his command over Chaos armies and his role in the destruction of the World-that-Was. It is an honorific of authority, not evidence that Archaon is a fifth Chaos God.
