Choose only after estimating egress from your actual bitrate and deciding whether the VM will merely send an encoded feed or also encode/transcode it.

There is no direct head-to-head YouTube ingest benchmark in these sources. A provider’s guide, bandwidth allowance, or availability term cannot establish that a specific VM will keep your channel live without interruption.
Estimate stream traffic before choosing a plan
Your stream continuously sends data from the VM to YouTube, so outbound bitrate is the key traffic figure. As a first-pass estimate, 1 Mbps running continuously for 30 days uses about 0.324 TB in decimal units. At 10 Mbps, that is about 3.24 TB per 30 days, before audio and protocol overhead or operational variation. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider quotes.
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send.
- Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for those exact settings and calculate the resulting continuous bitrate.
- Estimate monthly egress as bitrate × seconds in the month, converted to bytes; then add a margin for overhead and variation.
- Compare that estimate with the selected VM’s included outbound transfer and the applicable overage terms for its specific region and plan.
Do not compare a Hetzner dedicated root server traffic figure with Cloud VM terms. Hetzner documents separate traffic allowances for those product categories. Confirm the current Cloud price, included transfer, and overage rate for the precise model and zone in its Cloud billing FAQ.

Decide whether the VM forwards or encodes
Forwarding an already encoded stream
If the video is already encoded and the VM only sends it to YouTube, size the server around the forwarding software, network needs, and operating margin. The outbound stream still drives transfer use. Keep the source file or feed available after restart and verify the sending process resumes correctly.
Encoding or transcoding on the VM
Encoding and transcoding add CPU or hardware-encoder demands; they are not equivalent to forwarding a pre-encoded file. Do not assume a small shared-CPU VM can handle a given resolution or frame rate. Run a representative test on the exact instance class, including audio and typical motion, and check for dropped frames and sustained resource pressure before using it continuously. Vultr documents dedicated Optimized Cloud Compute for demanding applications such as video transcoding, but does not publish a guarantee for your specific stream workload.

Configure YouTube’s stream settings and protect the key
Use YouTube’s current encoder guide for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you choose. Its retrieved settings include RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, support up to 60 fps, and recommend CBR. The exact bitrate depends on the selected codec and video settings; for example, YouTube’s retrieved table lists H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Check the live table rather than treating those examples as universal settings.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Test with representative audio and movement before relying on the stream. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor YouTube stream health during operation, not only whether the sender process appears to be running.
- Keep the stream key secret: store it in a protected configuration or secret manager, restrict access to the VM, and do not include it in screenshots, logs, or public scripts. Regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Build a recovery and monitoring plan
A VM being available does not ensure that the video sender, source file, connection to YouTube, or stream itself remains healthy. Treat restart behavior and recovery as part of the design.
- Use a process supervisor or equivalent service management so the sender can restart after a process crash or VM reboot.
- Keep uploaded source files on persistent storage and confirm they remain available after a restart.
- Monitor both the sending process and YouTube’s stream health; alert on a stopped process, loss of output, or sustained errors.
- Document how to restart the sender and restore the stream key securely. Test the procedure before depending on it.
- If uninterrupted delivery is important, design and test a recovery or failover method; the provider documents cited here do not demonstrate a failover configuration for your setup.
Which provider should you choose?
- Start with Vultr if you value a directly documented OBS/Broadcaster workflow and will verify that the selected instance’s traffic allowance and compute capacity match your stream. The guide is a setup path, not a reliability benchmark.
- Consider Hetzner if an available Cloud location is suitable and the allowance and quoted price for your exact zone and plan fit your calculated egress. Check Cloud terms specifically, not dedicated-server traffic figures.
- For either provider, test first if the VM encodes or transcodes. Require a representative test on the intended instance rather than inferring capacity from a product label.
Compare the live prices for the same region, billing period, and workload assumptions. This comparison does not establish that one provider is universally cheaper: egress inclusion, overages, location, instance capacity, and recovery requirements can change the total.
