Vultr describes two distinct routes: its Broadcaster Marketplace app, which its guide says to deploy on an A16 GPU instance, and a self-managed Ubuntu server running OBS and FFmpeg. Its published Ubuntu baseline is 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth; that is a suggested starting point, not proof of reliable performance for every stream.
Choose Vultr if you want to manage a VM, transfer your media, monitor resource use and bandwidth, and handle ongoing maintenance. If your priority is looping uploaded videos without keeping a home computer on or operating OBS, StreamNeo is a simpler YouTube-only alternative.
What Vultr offers for a 24/7 YouTube stream
Vultr’s streaming documentation covers two ways to run OBS in the cloud. They are different deployment choices—not two names for the same Cloud Compute plan. The Marketplace guide calls for a specific A16 GPU instance; the Ubuntu guide gives a general VM baseline for a self-managed OBS and FFmpeg installation.
- Marketplace Broadcaster: a browser-accessible OBS implementation configured with scenes and GPU integration. Vultr’s instructions direct users to deploy the One Click Vultr Broadcaster A16 GPU instance.
- Self-managed Ubuntu: install and configure OBS Studio and FFmpeg on an Ubuntu server, then send the output to YouTube.
Vultr’s Broadcaster guide says that for a 24/7 stream, you should upload your source files to the server. It describes SFTP for transferring them and also mentions FTP, SCP, and Rsync. Its page uses the phrase “Unlimited Network Bandwidth” for the described offering; do not assume that wording applies to every Cloud Compute plan.

Consider the Marketplace route if you prefer its browser-accessible OBS workflow and GPU-backed deployment. Consider Ubuntu if you specifically want to manage the server and software yourself. The published Ubuntu resource figures are a baseline recommendation, not a promise that a particular scene, codec, or stream will run smoothly on it.
Self-managed Ubuntu: resources and OBS settings
Vultr’s guide, dated April 1, 2025, recommends starting with an Ubuntu server with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, 80 GB of storage, and 3 TB of bandwidth. Use that as a planning baseline, then check the actual VM’s CPU behavior and transfer allowance against your stream. A demanding scene or higher output can change resource needs.

In OBS, set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the stream you intend to run. Keep the stream key private: enter it in the appropriate YouTube destination or stream settings, and do not include it in screenshots or logs you share. Vultr’s guide recommends setting OBS automatic reconnect delay to 3 seconds or less and maximum retries to 1,000 or more.
Operational monitoring
Watch CPU use while the stream is active. Vultr warns that utilization above 90% can lead to dropped frames and buffering; this is the guide’s operational warning, not a measured result for every VM. If CPU use is excessive, Vultr advises reducing resolution or upgrading the server. Track outgoing bandwidth as well, particularly when the chosen plan has a transfer limit.
Bandwidth, pricing, and the real monthly cost
A continuously active stream sends data for as long as it runs. The bitrate and active time therefore affect outgoing transfer use: a higher bitrate or longer streaming period consumes more data. Estimate the transfer you expect, compare it with the allowance for the exact plan and region you are considering, and check what happens if you exceed it. Vultr’s bandwidth dashboard shows transfer use and overage fees.

At the time of retrieval, Vultr’s Cloud Compute overview displayed a starting price of $0.005 per hour for a configuration with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage. That entry configuration is smaller than the Ubuntu streaming baseline in Vultr’s guide and is not a cost estimate for hosting a stream. The available information does not establish a full monthly bill or a current plan-specific bandwidth allowance. Confirm the selected plan’s price, included transfer, and overage terms at purchase time.
Vultr’s Cloud Compute FAQ includes questions about whether instances can run web applications and services and whether stopped instances incur charges. The answers were not available in the material reviewed for this article, so check Vultr’s current FAQ and billing terms before relying on either point for your setup.
How credible is Vultr for uninterrupted streaming?
Vultr’s guides show that it documents ways to configure OBS for YouTube, and the Ubuntu guide supplies practical resource and reconnect recommendations. That makes the setup plausible for operators comfortable managing a cloud server. It does not establish guaranteed 24/7 availability, expected latency, or how a particular configuration will perform. The cited guidance is not an independent uptime test or a configuration-specific service-level commitment.

Plan for operational work: keep the source files accessible, monitor CPU and transfer use, and verify that reconnect behavior works for your setup. A cloud VM removes the need to leave your own computer running, but it does not remove the need to configure and supervise the streaming system.
