Yes—VS Code can open Excel files for code-connected inspection and data cleaning. With Microsoft’s Data Wrangler, you can explore an .xls or .xlsx file, transform its data, and generate Pandas code without changing the original unless you export. It complements Excel; the documented workflow does not make VS Code a replacement for Excel’s full workbook interface or feature set.

Can I open an Excel file in VS Code?

Yes. Microsoft’s Data Wrangler is integrated into VS Code and VS Code Jupyter Notebooks, and supports .xls and .xlsx files as well as .csv, .tsv, and .parquet. You can open a local file from a folder in VS Code, or load data into a Pandas DataFrame in a notebook and open that data object in Data Wrangler. For an Excel file, you may specify a sheet when applicable.

Microsoft describes Data Wrangler as “a code-centric data viewing and cleaning tool that is integrated into VS Code and VS Code Jupyter Notebooks.” Its sandbox lets you explore and transform data without changing the source file. Changes take effect in an output only when you explicitly export.

What can VS Code do with an Excel spreadsheet?

Inspect the data

Data Wrangler presents data in a grid and can show column statistics and visualizations. That makes it useful for checking the shape and contents of a table before you write analysis code or pass data into another workflow.

Clean and transform it

Use Data Wrangler’s cleaning and transformation operations to prepare the data. As you work, it generates the corresponding Pandas code. You can copy that code or export it to a notebook, turning an exploratory cleanup into steps you can review and reuse.

Export a data file

You can export cleaned data as a new CSV or Parquet file. This is a data-preparation workflow, not editing and saving a fully featured Excel workbook in place; the documented export options are CSV, Parquet, notebook code, or copied code.

How to try the Excel-to-code workflow

  1. Open a folder in VS Code. Put the local Excel file in the folder you are working with.
  2. Open the file with Data Wrangler. Use the documented Data Wrangler action to load the supported file, selecting a sheet if needed.
  3. Inspect and transform the data. Review the grid, column statistics, and visualizations, then apply the cleaning operations you need. Data Wrangler generates Pandas code for the transformations.
  4. Choose an output deliberately. Export the cleaned data to a new CSV or Parquet file, export the generated code to a notebook, or copy the code. The original file is not modified until you export changes.

You can also begin in a notebook: read the file into a Pandas DataFrame, then open that data object in Data Wrangler. This route is useful when you need notebook code to control how the file is read.

When Excel is still the better fit—and when VS Code helps

This is a task-based distinction, not a formal feature-by-feature comparison. Excel is the natural choice for spreadsheet-first work with a workbook’s interface and features. VS Code with Data Wrangler, Python, and Jupyter is useful when the job is to inspect tabular data, clean it, analyze it, or make transformations repeatable as code. You can use both: prepare a dataset in VS Code, then use the resulting data file in a spreadsheet workflow.

Microsoft’s Data Science profile template combines Data Wrangler, Jupyter, and Python as a starting setup for data work in VS Code. You can select that profile when you want a convenient foundation rather than assembling the tools one by one.

What you need for notebooks and Python

For notebook work, install and configure Python and the Jupyter extension as needed. Microsoft says the Python and Jupyter extensions work together to let you view and modify notebook code cells, run them, and debug them. A suitable Python environment with the Jupyter package is required.

These requirements can change as the extension evolves, so check the current Data Wrangler documentation if setup differs on your machine.

File-loading problems and extension checks

If a file will not load

A direct file load can fail with UnicodeDecodeError when a file uses a non-UTF-8 encoding or is corrupted. Microsoft documents reading the file through a notebook with explicit encoding options as a workaround. This also gives you a place to control file-reading parameters before opening the resulting DataFrame in Data Wrangler.

Before installing extensions

Use the VS Code Marketplace to discover extensions, but do not treat Marketplace availability alone as a safety guarantee. Microsoft recommends reviewing an extension’s publisher, install count, rating, README, dependencies, and setup requirements. Its documentation also describes security measures for extensions; check those details alongside the extension’s own information before installing.

Why this is a useful Excel companion

The value is not that VS Code turns into another spreadsheet app. It gives Excel users a path from a table to inspectable, code-backed data work: explore a supported file, clean it in a sandbox, and keep the transformation as Pandas code when it needs to be repeated. For workbook-first editing, stay in Excel; for repeatable data preparation and analysis, Data Wrangler and notebooks offer a practical companion workflow.
