First check whether only the shortcut is broken, then look for the installed app and any antivirus action. If Code.exe is actually gone, reinstall VS Code without deleting your settings or projects.
Why VS Code may be missing after a restart
A Windows issue report opened in 2018 describes VS Code disappearing after the computer was shut down with an update downloaded but not yet applied. That makes an interrupted update a plausible explanation, not a confirmed cause in every case. In a separate report opened in January 2026, a user said the updater removed the existing installation before the new one was complete; the issue was closed as a duplicate, and that account is not an official determination of the updater’s behavior. The 2018 issue report and the 2026 report concern Windows; they do not establish the same cause on macOS or Linux.
Other explanations include a stale shortcut, an installation in a different location or format, or security software quarantining or removing application files. VS Code’s FAQ notes antivirus quarantine or removal as a possible troubleshooting issue, but that does not identify the cause on any particular PC. See the VS Code FAQ.
Check whether VS Code is really uninstalled
- Try the Start menu. Search for Visual Studio Code and open it. If it launches, the app is present and the desktop or taskbar shortcut may simply be stale.
- Inspect the shortcut target. Right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and check the Target field. A target that points to a missing file indicates a broken shortcut, but does not prove that another VS Code copy is absent.
- Check likely install locations. A Windows user-install is commonly located under the user’s local application programs folder. Also search for another VS Code installation or an extracted ZIP folder; the two installation types are handled differently by the official uninstall guidance. Review the uninstall instructions.
- Review security history. Check Windows Security’s protection history or the quarantine/history view in your other antivirus product for VS Code files. If files were removed, follow that product’s restore guidance only if you trust the detected files and their origin.
Reinstall VS Code if its executable is absent
If you cannot find a working installation or Code.exe, install VS Code again using Microsoft’s official Windows setup instructions. A Microsoft Q&A response for a Windows 11 case also recommends reinstalling and points to the pending-update issue, but does not establish a universal cause. Follow the official Windows setup guide.

Choose the User Installer if you want VS Code installed for your Windows account, or the System Installer if you need an installation available across accounts and have the necessary permissions. The ZIP archive is another option when you want to run the extracted application folder directly. None of the available sources establishes that one installer type prevents the reported disappearance.
Do not delete VS Code’s user-data folders as part of an ordinary reinstall. The application files and the folders that hold settings and extensions are separate; removing user data is relevant to a clean removal, not a necessary first step to restore the app. The official uninstall guidance explains the distinction.

How the Windows installation choices differ

These distinctions follow the official setup overview and portable-mode documentation. Portable mode can keep data beside a ZIP installation, but it should not be treated as a proven fix for the reported updater scenario.

- When VS Code indicates that an update is pending, let it finish and restart VS Code normally before shutting down Windows. This is prudent given the reported scenario, not a guaranteed prevention.
- Before reinstalling, preserve any relevant updater log if you can locate it. The 2026 issue reporter said they inspected a
vscode-inno-updaterlog in the user’s Temp directory; this is a user-reported clue, not formal diagnostic guidance. - Record whether the missing copy was a User Installer, System Installer, or extracted ZIP folder, and check security history. Those details help distinguish an incomplete update from a shortcut, location, or quarantine problem.
The issue reports do not provide a reliable measure of how often this happens. They are reports of individual Windows cases, not evidence that VS Code routinely removes itself after a window closes.
