VRS and HLTV rankings are separate systems, not two versions of the same leaderboard. Valve’s monthly Valve Regional Standings (VRS) rank rosters and provide the basis for Direct VRS Invites. HLTV’s world ranking is its own weekly ranking of teams. Their positions and points use different methods, so a team’s place in one cannot be converted into an equivalent place in the other.
What is the difference between VRS and HLTV rankings?
The main difference is what each ranking is for. Valve defines VRS in its Tournament Operation Requirements as its official system for ranking roster performance; it is published monthly and is the basis for Direct VRS Invites. HLTV describes a separate world ranking of competitive teams, updated weekly.
Valve’s Major rulebook gives VRS a further tournament role: regional VRS lists order rosters for invitations, while the global VRS is used for pre-event seeding after invitations are accepted. HLTV’s ranking is not a substitute for those official Valve standings.
How do the systems differ?
| Comparison | Valve Regional Standings (VRS) | HLTV world ranking |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Official Valve roster-performance ranking; basis for Direct VRS Invites. Major regional lists sort rosters for invitations, and global VRS is used for pre-event seeding after invitations are accepted. Valve Tournament Operation Requirements; Valve Major rulebook. | HLTV’s separate editorial world ranking of competitive teams. HLTV ranking methodology. |
| Update cadence | Monthly, under Valve’s requirements. Tournament-specific rules may specify which published standings apply. Valve Tournament Operation Requirements. | Weekly, according to HLTV’s methodology page. HLTV ranking methodology. |
| Ranking unit and continuity | A roster is five specific athletes, regardless of their current or later association with an organization. Valve Tournament Operation Requirements. | Past points are retained when a team keeps a three-player core. HLTV ranking methodology. |
| Evidence horizon | Valve’s cited requirements establish the ranking’s purpose and monthly publication schedule; they do not establish HLTV’s time windows as VRS factors. | Prior-year achievements with severe monthly point decay, recent form over the last two months, and performance at the last ten LAN events. Online matches and tournaments also count with a diminishing factor. HLTV ranking methodology. |
| Geographic scope | Regional standings are used for Major invitations; global VRS is used for seeding after invitations are accepted. A roster’s region is based on the majority of its players. A tie is resolved using the region with greater Major representation, in this order: Europe, Americas, then Asia. Valve Major rulebook. | The cited methodology describes a world ranking. It does not provide a regional assignment rule corresponding to Valve’s Major-region rules. HLTV ranking methodology. |
Why can a team rank differently on VRS and HLTV?
The rankings update on different schedules
VRS is published monthly, while HLTV updates weekly. HLTV can therefore reflect a more recent change in results before the next VRS publication. A difference in position does not by itself indicate an error; the two lists may reflect different update dates as well as different methods.

They use different ranking methods
HLTV’s methodology explicitly considers achievements over the prior year, with severe decay in points throughout each month, recent form over two months, and results at the last ten LAN events. It also says that online matches and tournaments count with a diminishing factor. Those are HLTV’s stated criteria, not a description of Valve’s formula.
Valve’s requirements identify VRS as the official monthly roster-performance ranking used for invites, but the cited material does not establish the exact VRS sub-factors or their calculations. HLTV’s feature article describes five VRS sub-factors, but its existence is not enough to infer their exact formula. The two rankings should therefore be compared by purpose and published position—not by assuming they reward identical results.

They do not treat roster continuity in the same way
Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes independently of their association with an organization. HLTV’s methodology uses a three-player core as the condition for retaining past ranking points. A team name or organization can persist through lineup changes, but the unit being ranked and the continuity rule may differ between systems.
Which ranking is used for Major invites?
Valve’s VRS is the relevant system for Direct VRS Invites. Under Valve’s Major rulebook, regional VRS lists sort rosters for invitations. Once invitations are accepted, the global VRS is used for pre-event seeding. HLTV’s ranking may offer a separate view of team performance, but it is not the official Valve standings for those functions.

Is HLTV’s VRS ranking official?
No. HLTV’s world ranking is published by HLTV and is distinct from Valve Regional Standings. Valve’s Tournament Operation Requirements define VRS as Valve’s official ranking system. HLTV may discuss or analyze VRS, but that does not make its own world ranking an official Valve ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare a team’s positions?
- Check the date of each list. A monthly VRS snapshot and a weekly HLTV update may not cover the same point in time.
- Check the scope: compare Valve’s regional list with the relevant region in mind, or distinguish it from global VRS used for seeding.
- Keep the ranking unit in view. Valve’s roster is five named athletes; HLTV’s continuity rule is based on a three-player core.
- Do not compare raw points as if they shared a scale. The rules establish separate systems, not a point conversion or a claim that one ranking is more accurate.
Standings and methodology can change. For a live comparison, use the dated Valve VRS release and current HLTV ranking rather than relying on an old position or an undated points total.
