If your vMix YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first identify where the failure occurs: in vMix, on the connection to YouTube, or only during viewer playback. Record the time, vMix status, session log error, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health message before changing settings. Then follow the evidence: a vMix orange status usually points to congestion, while a failed connection at startup may be caused by an incorrect stream URL or key.

First, identify what is disconnecting

A stream can appear to drop for different reasons. The encoder may stop sending, YouTube may report an ingestion error, or viewers may buffer even though the encoder is still connected. Those symptoms call for different fixes.

What you see What to check first
vMix Stream button stops or reports an error Open View Status and inspect the latest vMix streaming log.
vMix changes from red to amber/orange Check sustained upload capacity, other network traffic, and local-network congestion. vMix says this status change usually indicates network congestion.
YouTube Live Control Room reports an error Use the timestamped stream-health message to check the relevant setting or connection at that time.
Viewers buffer, but vMix remains connected Check YouTube stream health and viewer playback separately; buffering alone does not establish that vMix disconnected.

Capture the evidence before changing settings

  1. Note the event time. Write down the time and timezone, whether the Stream button is red, amber/orange, or stopped, and whether the local program output still looks and sounds correct.
  2. Check YouTube at the same time. In YouTube Live Control Room, record the stream-health status and exact error message. YouTube attaches timestamps to detected errors, which helps distinguish a cause from an unrelated warning.
  3. Open vMix status details. In vMix, open Streaming settings and select View Status to inspect technical stream information.
  4. Preserve the session log. Check C:ProgramDatavMixstreaming and keep the newest log. If you cannot interpret it, vMix advises sending the log to its support team.
  5. Change one variable at a time. Note what you changed and when, then observe whether the same symptom returns. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to connect a fix to the failure.

These steps follow vMix’s Settings guide, its FFMPEG streaming-log guidance, and YouTube’s live-stream error guide.

Use the vMix status and log to narrow the cause

Log shows an FFMPEG I/O disconnect

If the log contains av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error or Input/output error, vMix says the stream has disconnected. Possible causes it lists include a local internet outage, an outage or closure at the streaming provider, and third-party antivirus or security software. The message does not identify which one occurred on your system.

  • Check whether other internet services failed at the same time.
  • Ask your internet or streaming provider whether there was an outage.
  • Review security software and network rules for interference with the streaming connection.

Do not assume that changing resolution or bitrate will address an outage or software block. See vMix’s log explanations and streaming-error diagnosis.

vMix changes from red to amber/orange

vMix says an amber/orange status after the button was red usually indicates network congestion; inadequate computer or graphics-card performance is less likely in this particular situation. Compare the outgoing bitrate with upload capacity you can sustain, not just a peak speed-test result. Check for other devices uploading, local-network bottlenecks, or congestion that coincides with the dropout.

The connection fails immediately

Check the destination server URL and stream key against the current values in YouTube Live Control Room. vMix identifies invalid URL or key details as possible causes of connection errors. A provider may also reject invalid credentials or an expired stream. If a key may be stale or rejected, retrieve the current one from Live Control Room and update the encoder using YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.

“Real-time buffer too full” appears

At startup, vMix says this message can simply mean the provider or CDN is taking longer to connect. If it appears after the stream was already red and the status becomes amber/orange, investigate congestion instead of treating the message alone as a diagnosis.

Read YouTube’s stream-health errors

Use the error timestamp that matches your dropout. YouTube classifies red messages as critical; they may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow messages are moderate and can degrade quality. A warning is useful evidence, but it is not automatically the root cause.

  • URL, protocol, or key: Confirm the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
  • Video and audio streams: Check that codecs and stream counts meet YouTube’s requirements. Its errors include unsupported codecs, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and channel-count problems.
  • Bitrate: Match bitrate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and to the upload connection you can sustain. YouTube advises lowering resolution when the available bandwidth cannot support the selected settings.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Frame rate and keyframe interval are linked in its error guidance.
  • RTMPS: If using RTMPS, confirm the address is the supplied rtmps server URL. YouTube says to check encoder support; port 443 may be a relevant configuration when the URL requires it.

Use YouTube’s live-stream error messages, encoder troubleshooting, and RTMPS guidance alongside the current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Match the encoder profile to the connection

YouTube’s currently surfaced H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates. They are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that an uplink will remain stable.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps

Check YouTube’s current settings page for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use; do not copy a bitrate from a different mode. Your sustained upload capacity needs to support the outgoing stream, with room for network variation and other traffic.

Test the connection, encoder, and long-duration setup

Separate internet problems from encoder problems

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. If the encoder output looks healthy but the stream fails, investigate the outbound internet path; contact your internet provider if a connection test reveals a problem. If the encoder output itself looks or sounds poor, inspect source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load. Trying another encoder can be a comparative diagnostic, not proof that the original encoder was at fault.

Rehearse under representative conditions

Before a long run, test with the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, motion, audio, routing, and expected network load. Watch both vMix status/logs and YouTube stream health throughout. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the event.

Plan for the limits of a 24/7 run

The vMix and YouTube guidance covers setup, diagnostics, and monitoring; it does not establish that a vMix encoder will reconnect automatically after every disconnect or guarantee an uninterrupted 24-hour feed. For a long-duration stream, arrange an operator or alert path to monitor ingestion, viewer playback, encoder status, disk space or local recording, and network connectivity. Rehearse recovery and verify any failover using the exact setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That limit matters if you rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a continuous stream; make a separate recording plan where needed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide also identifies cloud services for continuous prerecorded-video playout, which is a different workflow from a live vMix production.

Tune vMix settings only when evidence supports it

Use the recommended streaming application

vMix’s current Help 27 guidance recommends FFMPEG and describes FMLE as legacy. Compatibility can differ by provider, so confirm support before changing codec or protocol settings.

Consider the Network Buffer for unreliable speed

vMix’s Network Buffer control sets the maximum time it can keep data buffered. Its guidance says to increase it when maximum available network speed is unreliable. Test the resulting delay: this setting can add latency from vMix. It is not a fix for a full outage, invalid key, provider outage, or saturated or failed connection. See the vMix Streaming Quality guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the job is continuous prerecorded-video playout rather than a live vMix production, StreamNeo is an alternative designed to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is YouTube-only and does not replace vMix for live camera production. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
