If your vMix stream to YouTube keeps buffering on Airtel broadband, first check the stream’s actual resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations. Then test sustained upload performance from the computer and connection you will use, inspect vMix’s network buffer, and check CPU and GPU load. The title alone does not establish whether the cause is Airtel, Wi-Fi, household traffic, the route to YouTube, or the streaming computer.

Why is my vMix YouTube stream buffering on Airtel broadband?

Buffering or poor stream health can arise when the upload path cannot reliably sustain the encoder’s bitrate, when vMix’s encoding load is too high, or from other parts of the network path. An advertised broadband speed or one speed test is not proof that the connection can sustain a live stream throughout an event. Without your Airtel plan, measured upload results, router and Wi-Fi details, and test observations, there is no basis to assign the fault to Airtel or recommend a plan upgrade.

Use a controlled test to distinguish likely causes: reduce output demands and see whether stability improves, while observing both vMix system load and YouTube stream health. These results can point toward a limiting factor, but they are not a remote diagnosis.

Match vMix output to YouTube’s bitrate guidance

YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The values below are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations; the accessed page did not state a publication year. Recommendations for other codecs differ, so match the row to the encoder actually selected in vMix. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are encoder targets, not proof that a particular Airtel connection can deliver them reliably. YouTube’s separate AV1/H.265 table includes different recommendations—for example, 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60—so do not apply those figures to H.264. Consult the current table for the codec and output you use; YouTube’s recommendations can change.

Record the actual output settings

  • Note the output resolution and frame rate, rather than relying on a project preset or intended setting.
  • Identify the selected video codec or encoder and configured video bitrate.
  • Check that the stream size matches the aspect ratio, as vMix’s guidance advises.
  • Compare the combination with YouTube’s row for that codec, resolution and frame rate.

Find a stable starting point

If the current stream is unstable, temporarily lower the output resolution or frame rate and set a bitrate appropriate to that exact output and codec. Test again. If stability improves and the computer remains responsive, the upload path is a likely constraint, though repeated tests are needed to confirm. Increase one setting at a time while watching upload behavior and YouTube stream health; do not jump straight back to a demanding output after one successful test.

Test the upload connection under realistic conditions

YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and testing before the live event. Run the test from the streaming computer, using the same wired or wireless setup planned for the event. Repeat it at a time that resembles when buffering occurs: network conditions can vary, and a short test cannot establish sustained performance through a full broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also recommends testing before going live.

  1. Connect the streaming computer using the intended setup. If the event will use Wi-Fi, test on that Wi-Fi; if it will use Ethernet, test with the planned cable and port.
  2. Run an upload speed test and note the result and time. Repeat it rather than treating a single measurement as a guarantee.
  3. Start a representative test stream before the event, with similar audio and motion to the planned program. Use a private, unlisted or otherwise appropriate test arrangement.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test, and compare them with vMix’s performance and network observations.

If the upload result varies or YouTube reports stream-health problems, try a less demanding output and repeat the test. Consider other traffic sharing the connection and whether the test reproduces the event’s conditions before drawing conclusions about the ISP.

Check vMix’s streaming quality and network buffer

In vMix, open the streaming settings and inspect the available Streaming Quality controls. The exact labels or options can vary by installed version; vMix documentation covers different guide versions, so use the help for your release. Check video bitrate, encode size, audio bitrate, encoder settings, network buffer and Strict CBR.

Network Buffer

vMix says to “Increase the Network Buffer if the maximum network speed available is unreliable.” The buffer controls how many seconds of stream data vMix can keep buffered and therefore affects potential latency from vMix; streaming servers and players add their own buffering too. Increasing it may help tolerate speed variation, but it does not increase upload speed or repair a weak connection or packet loss. Raise it only as a measured trial, and account for the added delay if low latency matters. See vMix’s Streaming Quality settings guidance.

Strict CBR and stream size

vMix’s Strict CBR option tries to keep streaming speed close to the selected bitrates and may reduce quality. Treat it as a configuration to test for a specific need, not a general cure for an upload bottleneck. Also verify that the stream size has the correct aspect ratio.

Rule out encoding and system load

Streaming compression uses computer resources as well as network capacity. vMix says the CPU is used primarily for audio and video compression, and that recording and streaming also use CPU. During a representative test, inspect CPU and GPU usage and note whether performance worsens when the stream starts. See vMix’s performance guidance.

If an NVIDIA graphics card is installed, vMix suggests trying “Use Hardware Encoder” to reduce CPU use. This is a trial, not a guarantee: results depend on the GPU, driver, project and vMix version. Compare system load and stream behavior before and after changing the encoder, changing one variable at a time.

Use test results to narrow the cause

  • Lower bitrate or output becomes stable while vMix remains responsive: the upload path is a likely limiting factor. Repeat the test under representative conditions before deciding.
  • Upload tests appear adequate, but vMix performs poorly even at reduced output: investigate encoding and system load, including whether a hardware-encoder trial helps.
  • Results vary between tests or times: compare the connection arrangement, other household or office traffic, and YouTube stream-health behavior. The evidence does not by itself identify whether Wi-Fi, the router, Airtel provisioning, or the route to YouTube is responsible.
  • A larger network buffer appears to help: weigh any improvement against the additional potential latency. The buffer is not a substitute for a stable connection.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom or check What to do
Output bitrate is high for the measured connection Lower resolution or frame rate, then choose the matching codec-specific YouTube bitrate and run another realistic test.
Upload speed varies across tests Repeat tests from the streaming setup at representative times; monitor YouTube stream health during a test stream.
Network speed is unreliable Try a larger vMix Network Buffer if added latency is acceptable; do not treat this as a speed increase or packet-loss fix.
CPU usage or vMix performance is poor Check CPU and GPU load during streaming. If an NVIDIA graphics card is present, test vMix’s “Use Hardware Encoder” option.
Settings appear correct but the issue persists Change one variable at a time, repeat the test, and compare output settings, upload behavior, system load and YouTube health messages. The available details do not establish an Airtel-specific cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than stream a camera or live vMix production, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
