Short answer: Streamlabs Desktop is the more production-oriented choice if you need scenes, overlays, and its streaming workflow. VLC may suit straightforward prerecorded playback, but current authoritative instructions for using it to send a looping local file to YouTube Live—and for recovering automatically after interruptions—are not established here. What you need before going live
- Live streaming enabled on the YouTube channel. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- A YouTube live event and its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not show or share it.
- An encoder configured to match YouTube’s current guidance: RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Upload bandwidth with headroom, plus time to test the exact files and settings in a preview before making the event public.
- A plan for local recording if you need a complete archive. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table to choose bitrate for your resolution and frame rate rather than copying an old tutorial. Settings should match the actual encoder and the upload capacity of your connection. Check stream health during the test and confirm that any local recording is being written and remains playable.
Set up and test the desktop workflow
- Enable YouTube Live. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or select the live event. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, obtain the server URL and stream key for the event. Keep the key confidential.
- Configure the encoder. In the application’s current YouTube integration or custom RTMP settings, enter the URL and key. Set H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Load the prerecorded content. Configure the app’s current playback or playlist controls for the intended sequence. Verify that playback actually repeats at the end; do not infer 24/7 looping from a successful one-time playback.
- Preview before going public. Start a private or unlisted test and check video, audio, stream health, and the local archive. Confirm that the feed stays stable for long enough to expose ordinary file transitions and resource problems.
- Exercise recovery deliberately. Test what happens if the media ends, the network drops, the app closes, and the computer restarts. Record which failures require manual intervention, and arrange monitoring accordingly.
- Choose an archive strategy. If preserving the whole broadcast matters, maintain a local recording and check its integrity; alternatively, plan shorter sessions rather than depending on one YouTube archive for an uninterrupted day-long output.
24/7 limitations to plan around
YouTube archives are not a complete safety net
YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams may also have limited DVR rewind. If the video itself must be preserved, use a checked local recording or design shorter sessions around the archive requirement.

A running desktop app still depends on the computer
A desktop encoder needs the host machine, power, application, and internet connection to keep working. A UPS can help with brief power loss, but it does not prevent internet outages, application crashes, operating-system restarts, or YouTube-side interruptions. Treat it as one supporting measure, not a 24/7 guarantee.
Copyright and monetization are separate from technical uptime
A stream that connects successfully is not automatically permitted or eligible for monetization. Make sure you have the rights needed for every video and audio track, and review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and material. Repeating content does not by itself establish that you hold the necessary rights or meet monetization rules. You can use the copyright safety checklist as a planning aid.

Costs and practical choice
VLC and Streamlabs Desktop are desktop-software paths, but a 24/7 setup also has operating costs: a computer left running, electricity, a stable internet connection, and time to monitor and recover failures. If those responsibilities are acceptable and production controls matter, evaluate Streamlabs Desktop. If the goal is simple playback, test VLC with the exact files and current version before committing to it.
