Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a playlist-based YouTube broadcast, OBS Studio is the better choice as the encoder and control room; use its VLC Video source to play and loop your videos. VLC supplies playlist playback, while OBS handles scenes, the YouTube connection and stream monitoring. For an unattended broadcast, plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning: streams that run longer may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording if you need a replay.
VLC vs OBS: what each one does
| Need | OBS Studio with VLC Video source | VLC alone |
|---|---|---|
| Play and loop a video playlist | OBS documents a VLC Video source with playlist and loop support; VLC must also be installed. | VLC plays media and playlists, but the official guidance cited here does not establish it as a drop-in replacement for OBS’s production and stream-control workflow. |
| Manage scenes and sources | OBS provides scene-based sources, including the VLC-backed playlist source. | Not established by the cited official guidance as equivalent to OBS’s scene workflow. |
| Send a live feed to YouTube | Use OBS as the encoder, configure YouTube as the destination, and choose RTMPS where available. | The sources cited here do not establish a VLC-only YouTube setup with the same encoder controls and monitoring. |
That makes OBS plus VLC the practical DIY arrangement when you want a YouTube encoder with scene and source controls. A playback-only setup may have different needs, but the official documentation reviewed here does not support treating VLC alone as an equivalent OBS replacement.
Set up an OBS playlist stream
- Install OBS and VLC. Match their architectures. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, select the files or playlist you want to play, and enable looping.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS documents “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the VLC source’s default. If you switch scenes or hide the source, consider how that setting will affect playback; test the exact scene arrangement before leaving it unattended.
- Configure YouTube as the destination. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Keep your stream key private and do not publish it in a scene, recording or screenshot.
- Choose video settings for your actual connection. YouTube advises selecting a quality your internet connection can sustain and recommends an upload-speed test. Its published H.264 guidance includes 1080p30 at 5 Mbps recommended (4 Mbps minimum) and 720p30 at 4 Mbps recommended (3 Mbps minimum). These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance.
- Test representative content. Run a test using audio and motion like the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. A speed test alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable during a long session.
- Decide how to handle the archive. If an on-YouTube replay matters, plan to end or rotate the broadcast before it exceeds 12 hours. YouTube says an under-12-hour stream can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Keep a local recording backup as well.
Plan for long sessions and Indian network conditions
Separate continuity from replay
YouTube’s archive warning is not evidence that continuous broadcasting is forbidden; it is a limitation on whether a long broadcast is captured. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need a dependable replay, shorter sessions and a local recording are safer than relying on a single 24-hour archive.
Estimate recording storage from the selected bitrate and how long you intend to retain files. There is no single storage capacity that fits every stream: higher bitrates and longer retention require more space.

Test the actual site and equipment
- Run a sustained upload test at the location and on the connection you will use; no India-wide ISP speed or reliability figure is established here.
- Check the PC’s load and temperature during a representative test at the intended resolution and frame rate. No particular computer is guaranteed to run continuously at a given setting.
- If brief power interruptions are a concern, a UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may bridge them, but it cannot guarantee continuous service. Estimate runtime for the actual load rather than assuming a universal backup duration.
- Verify that local recording has enough free storage for the planned bitrate and retention period.
When HLS is relevant
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended default in its encoder guidance. HLS can be appropriate when an encoder or codec requirement calls for it and the encoder supports it, but it is not a general fix for an unstable connection. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC source will not load: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after a scene change: check the source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible; test the relevant scene transitions.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: test sustained upload performance at the streaming location, lower the selected quality if the connection cannot sustain it, and monitor stream-health messages during a representative test.
- The YouTube replay is missing after a very long broadcast: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording and use shorter sessions when the platform archive matters.
- Viewers cannot rewind far back: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
- The broadcast stops during a local outage: a local OBS setup depends on the computer, power and network remaining available. Check each part of that chain; a UPS may help with brief power interruptions but does not guarantee uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to carry the broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
