First check whether VLC is actually moving playlist rows or simply starting another item. If playback is selecting entries in an unexpected sequence, set playback order to normal and turn off random or shuffle. If the rows themselves move, inspect the playlist’s sort setting and check whether an external playlist or controller is changing it. These are separate controls, so the right fix depends on which symptom you see.

Identify what is changing

  • Rows move in the visible playlist: Look for a sort setting or a source that may be changing the list.
  • Rows stay put, but playback switches items: Check random or shuffle playback, and whether the current item has ended.

VLC treats playlist sorting and playback order as different functions. Interface wording and menu locations can vary by VLC release and operating system.

Fix unexpected playback order

  1. Set playback order to Normal. In VLC’s playback-order controls, choose the normal sequence rather than random or shuffle. VLC’s playlist implementation defines normal and random playback modes, but the exact control location depends on the version and platform.
  2. Turn off Random or Shuffle. If the control is enabled, VLC may select playlist entries in a different order even though their rows have not moved.
  3. Check whether the current item ended. If VLC switches only after an item finishes, that is playback advancing, not necessarily a playlist reorder. As a diagnostic, try repeat-current-item and see whether the unexpected advancement stops. A community report describes this helping with an M3U playlist, but it is anecdotal and does not establish a fix for YouTube live playback or visible rows moving.

Fix rows moving in the visible playlist

  1. Inspect the applied sort. VLC’s documented remote interface includes sort modes such as ID, name, author, random, and track number. A sort changes the displayed row order; it is distinct from random playback.
  2. Compare a saved list with the live session. Save or export the playlist before and after the order changes. If the saved list changes too, the playlist contents may be getting altered rather than merely displayed in a different playback sequence. VLC supports playlist export through its source API.
  3. Check how the stream was opened. Note whether you opened a YouTube URL directly or loaded it through an M3U or M3U8 file. Also check whether a remote-control or API client is connected; an external source or controller may be modifying the list.

Understand the YouTube live playlist distinction

A YouTube live stream may use an HLS media playlist: a list of media segments that make up the stream. RFC 8216 says a server’s media playlist contains segment URIs “in the order in which they are to be played,” and describes rules for updating that list. That HLS segment playlist is not the same thing as VLC’s visible playlist of media items or URLs. Its ordering rules therefore do not, by themselves, explain or fix rows moving in VLC.

RFC 8216 also requires playlist changes to be made atomically from the client’s point of view and restricts how a live playlist may be changed. Those requirements concern the server’s HLS segment list, not VLC’s playlist display.

If the order still changes

No single YouTube-specific cause or confirmed fix for a particular VLC release is established here. Record the details below so the issue can be diagnosed against your actual setup:

  • VLC version and operating system.
  • Whether you opened the YouTube live URL directly or used an M3U/M3U8 file.
  • Whether rows visibly move, or playback alone advances to another item.
  • Whether a remote-control or API client is connected.
  • Whether saving the playlist before and after the change shows different item order.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
