Choose FFmpeg for the clearer documented route from a looping video file to YouTube Live. Its official documentation shows real-time file output to RTMP and documents RTMPS variants. VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) can loop a broadcast input list, but that alone does not confirm that your installed VLC build can publish successfully to YouTube’s selected ingest endpoint. Whichever tool you use, test an unlisted or private stream before relying on it for a lesson.

What the choice comes down to

Looping prerecorded media and delivering a live encoder feed are separate jobs. A player’s repeat function may replay a file locally without sending any live stream to YouTube. You need both a repeat mechanism and an encoder output configured for YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key.

Question FFmpeg VLC with VLM
Can it loop media? Can be configured to repeat an input; the exact command depends on the file and installed build. VLM documentation describes a broadcast input list with a loop property.
Is the YouTube delivery path documented? FFmpeg documentation gives a real-time file-to-RTMP example and lists RTMPS protocol variants. VideoLAN documents VLM looping, but the cited documentation does not establish direct YouTube RTMPS compatibility for a particular VLC version.
What should you verify? Input compatibility, selected YouTube URL, stream key, output settings and build support. All of those, plus whether the installed VLC build supports the chosen output protocol and configuration.

This is a documentation-based distinction, not proof that VLC cannot work or that FFmpeg is universally more reliable. FFmpeg is the better-supported starting point for this specific end-to-end workflow.

Prepare the YouTube live stream

  1. Check eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository or share it in screenshots.
  3. Choose RTMPS when available. Copy the RTMPS ingest URL from Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it; the default URL may instead be RTMP. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  4. Choose output settings together. Select a supported video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval that your file, encoder build and upload connection can sustain. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video codec options, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder support varies with the software build and selected codec.
  5. Test the actual stream. Use a private or unlisted test, check the Live Control Room preview, inspect audio and moving video, and watch stream health. YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event; see its live streaming tips.

Set bitrate, keyframes and quality sensibly

YouTube’s settings page recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 table gives these examples:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that an upload connection at the same nominal rate will be stable. Leave upload headroom for normal network variation and test at the intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current table varies by codec, resolution and frame rate; consult the full encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than treating the examples above as universal settings.

Use FFmpeg for a documented encoder path

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates sending a file in real time to an RTMP server using -re, an input with -i, and FLV output with -f flv. It also documents RTMPS among its RTMP protocol variants and lists reconnect-related options. See FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

  1. Confirm your build and input. Check that your installed FFmpeg build can read the lesson file and supports the protocol and codecs you intend to use. The command must match the file, chosen YouTube ingest URL, stream key and output settings; a generic example is not a guarantee that every build or input will work.
  2. Use real-time input pacing. For file-to-live delivery, the documented RTMP pattern includes -re before the input so the file is read at a real-time rate, rather than pushed as fast as possible.
  3. Configure looping and output deliberately. Set the repeat behavior for your chosen input and configure video, audio, bitrate, keyframe interval and FLV/RTMP(S) output as appropriate. Verify the exact option syntax against the FFmpeg version installed; the cited FFmpeg documentation establishes the protocol pattern, not a single complete command for every lesson file and build.
  4. Keep the key private. Supply the stream key through a private local configuration or other protected method. Avoid placing it in a public script, command history that others can access, or shared logs.
  5. Observe a test before teaching. Start the encoder against a private or unlisted YouTube event. Confirm that the preview appears, audio is intelligible, video moves smoothly, and the stream remains healthy through a file loop.

For a continuous lesson stream, test the transition where the file reaches its end and begins again. A successful first playback does not prove that looping, reconnect behavior or long-running delivery will work as intended.

Use VLC VLM only after verifying your build’s output path

VideoLAN’s VLM documentation describes a broadcast made from an input, an output and a loop property; an input list restarts after its last input finishes. That confirms a looping mechanism. It does not, by itself, verify direct YouTube RTMPS output for every VLC version or configuration.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  1. Check the exact installation. Verify the version and available streaming output modules on the machine you will use. Confirm it can publish to the precise RTMP or RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room.
  2. Configure a VLM broadcast. Define the lesson input, the output destination and the loop behavior using the syntax supported by your VLC version. Refer to VideoLAN’s VLM documentation.
  3. Test a YouTube event privately. Do not infer successful YouTube delivery merely because VLM repeats the local input. Confirm the Live Control Room preview and stream health, including the handoff from the end of the file back to its start.

If the installed VLC build cannot publish reliably to the chosen ingest endpoint, use a documented FFmpeg RTMP(S) path or another tested encoder route rather than assuming local playback repeat is equivalent to a live stream.

Monitor the lesson and end the stream cleanly

  • Keep the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators open during the test and, where practical, during the lesson.
  • Check that audio is present and synchronized, the picture is moving as expected, and the loop boundary does not leave a gap or stop the broadcast.
  • If YouTube reports a dropped connection, check the encoder process, network path and stream health before restarting. FFmpeg documents reconnect-related protocol options, but their behavior depends on the command and build; test recovery rather than assuming it.
  • When finished, stop the YouTube stream and the encoder as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube shows no incoming stream Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported protocol/output, encoder not running Re-copy the URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, confirm RTMP versus RTMPS support, and inspect the encoder’s output for connection errors.
Local video plays but the live preview is blank Playback is working, but encoder output is not reaching YouTube Check the output destination and protocol separately from the local loop setting; test against a private or unlisted event.
Stream starts and then stalls or drops Upload capacity, network variation, encoder process or ingest connection Reduce output demands if necessary, leave more upload headroom, inspect YouTube stream health and test any reconnect behavior with the exact build and command.
The stream ends when the lesson file ends Loop behavior was not enabled or is configured incorrectly Verify the repeat configuration: FFmpeg’s chosen loop method or VLC VLM’s broadcast loop property. Test through a complete end-to-start transition.
Video works but audio is missing or unsuitable Input audio track, output codec or encoder configuration Check the source file’s audio stream and ensure the output uses an audio format accepted by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3.
VLC loops locally but cannot publish to YouTube Installed VLC version or output module may not support the selected ingest configuration Verify protocol and module support for that exact build; use FFmpeg’s documented RTMP(S) path if VLC cannot pass a private test.

Copyright and lesson-content checks

Before streaming a prerecorded lesson, confirm you have the rights to every included video, image, music track and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules. A private or unlisted technical test checks delivery; it does not grant rights to the content or establish that a public stream complies with YouTube policies.
