The Tab Button searches open, synced and recently closed tabs from one panel, while also grouping duplicate tabs for cleanup. This is a historical look at what shipped in 7.6; Vivaldi’s release archive now lists newer desktop versions.
What changed in Vivaldi 7.6?
The release centered on two tab-management changes rather than a redesign of Vivaldi’s existing tab system. The Tab Bar can be rearranged and edited, and The Tab Button provides a searchable place to find, switch to or recover tabs.

Vivaldi’s announcement presents these changes as ways to reduce detours while browsing. It does not provide a user study or performance benchmark proving faster task completion or greater productivity.
How to customize the Tab Bar
You can edit the Tab Bar from its own toolbar editor:

- Right-click any button on the Tab Bar.
- Select Customize toolbar.
- Use the editor to choose the tools you want and arrange them.
- Set the Tab Bar at the window edge that suits your layout: top, bottom, left or right.
This editor concerns the Tab Bar. Vivaldi discusses other customization areas separately, including the Address Bar, Status Bar, Side Bar, themes, shortcuts, gestures and Command Chains; changing those is not implied by the Tab Bar editor.
What The Tab Button does
The Tab Button is a tab-management panel, not merely a shortcut for opening a new tab. It combines several tab locations behind one search field:

- Open tabs: Find a tab currently open in the window.
- Synced tabs: Search tabs available through Vivaldi Sync.
- Recently closed tabs: Locate a closed tab and restore it.
Choose a result to jump to an open tab or restore a closed one. The release announcement also describes duplicate tabs being grouped in the panel, with controls to close the extras or clear the duplicate group.
Recovering a closed tab
Open The Tab Button, search for the page, then select its entry under recently closed tabs. The control is intended to bring recovery into the same interface used for switching among open and synced tabs.

Cleaning up duplicate tabs
When the panel identifies duplicate tabs, use its duplicate group controls to close the extra copies or clear the group together. The announcement does not claim a measured reduction in memory use or a particular productivity improvement.

- Address Field search keywords:
@tabs,@bookmarksand@historylet you target those collections from the address field. - Reorganized context menus: Common menu commands were cleaned up and rearranged.
- Popup rules in the built-in ad blocker: Additional rules can close some ad-related pop-ups.
- Windows swipe navigation: Trackpad or touch swipes can move backward and forward on Windows.
- Hibernated-tab switching: The release notes describe faster switching to hibernated tabs.
- Tab-stack editing: The changelog says the edit-stack dialog can appear automatically when creating a tab stack.
- Link-menu layout: The changelog lists an updated link-menu arrangement.
Tab cycling, tab stacks and other tab operations documented by Vivaldi existed as part of its broader tab toolkit; they were not introduced by 7.6 itself.

The swipe-navigation change is specifically described for Windows. The customizable Tab Bar and The Tab Button are the headline desktop-browser features in the 7.6 announcement, dated September 18, 2025. Because Vivaldi’s official desktop-release archive contains later entries, 7.6 should be treated as a release milestone rather than the current version.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Jon von Tetzchner, the announcement’s named author, wrote that “A great browser should feel like familiar tools in your hands.” That is Vivaldi’s product philosophy, not an independent usability finding. The release materials describe the intended workflows and controls, but provide no adoption figures, controlled comparison with another browser, task-completion study or benchmark demonstrating speed gains.
