Why VisualScraper settings cannot be named reliably yet
Available searches did not identify authoritative documentation for a screenshot product called VisualScraper. A similar name is not proof that a different tool is the same product: the documented command-line utility shot-scraper and the Crawlbrulee service are separate products. Their controls and defaults should not be attributed to VisualScraper.
Before following product-specific instructions, establish the vendor, exact product name, version, and whether it is a desktop app, browser tool, or screenshot API. Use that product’s own documentation or support materials to check the current setting labels and behavior.
What “retina” means in a screenshot
A screenshot has a CSS viewport size and a pixel density. Device pixel ratio (also called device scale factor in some tools) describes the relationship between CSS pixels and the pixels captured on the display surface. Operating-system display scaling can make physical and logical screen resolutions differ, so a display’s advertised resolution does not by itself tell you what dimensions a capture will have. For a fixed viewport, a 2× scale factor doubles the image’s width and height in pixels, producing four times as many total pixels. That can preserve more fine detail when an image is shown at a high-density display size, but it can also increase file size and capture work. The actual increase depends on the image format and page content.
Keep pixel density separate from compression quality
Density controls how many output pixels represent the CSS viewport. Compression quality controls the tradeoff between file size and image fidelity for a lossy format such as JPEG. Raising a JPEG quality value does not necessarily create a higher-density screenshot; increasing density does not itself specify the JPEG compression level.

As an example of why controls must be checked in the correct product, the shot-scraper documentation describes --retina as a device scale factor of 2. Its example turns a 400 × 600 CSS-pixel viewport into an 800 × 1200 image. It separately documents a positive floating-point --scale-factor option and says it cannot be combined with --retina. The documentation also treats JPEG --quality as a separate file-size tradeoff, using 80 as an example; its retina demonstration uses PNG. These are shot-scraper instructions, not VisualScraper settings.
How to choose and validate settings once you identify the product
- Confirm the product. Record the vendor, product edition, version, and capture method. Find documentation published for that exact product and version.
- Find the relevant controls. Look for viewport width and height, device pixel ratio or scale factor, output format, and compression quality. Check whether any controls conflict and whether the product imposes size or runtime limits.
- Hold the viewport constant. Capture the same page at 1× and at the higher density you want to evaluate. Keep the URL, viewport dimensions, and other capture settings unchanged so the comparison is meaningful.
- Check both output dimensions and appearance. Verify the resulting pixel width and height, then compare text and interface details at the intended display size—not only when zoomed in.
- Check file size and page behavior. Note the output size and capture time. Confirm that the page’s responsive layout did not change because the CSS viewport changed; a scale-factor adjustment should not be confused with increasing the viewport itself.
- Choose the least costly setting that meets the use case. Use the higher density when the target display or downstream use benefits from its extra detail. If file size matters, test format and compression separately rather than lowering density by reflex.
What cannot be recommended for VisualScraper
Without verified VisualScraper documentation, no specific setting name, default, command, UI path, supported output limit, or recommended factor can be established. Do not paste shot-scraper commands into VisualScraper or infer that the two products share behavior. No special monitor, capture device, or accessory is established as necessary; this is a software configuration question.

Does a 2× screenshot always have four times the file size?
No. It has four times the pixel count for the same CSS viewport, but the file-size change depends on image format, compression, and page content.

Not necessarily. Compare output detail, dimensions, file size, capture performance, and the intended display size, while checking the limits documented by the specific tool.
