Virtustream’s Healthcare Cloud was announced as a managed cloud option for complex, mission-critical healthcare applications, particularly Epic and Meditech. The launch emphasized migration and operations support, a HIPAA/HITECH-compliant environment, hybrid deployment, and availability service-level agreements (SLAs) of up to 99.999 percent. Those are historical launch claims, not confirmation of Virtustream’s current service catalogue or the terms available to a customer today.
What Virtustream Healthcare Cloud was designed to do
Virtustream positioned the service for healthcare organizations seeking to run demanding electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) applications in the cloud without treating them like ordinary, easily interchangeable workloads. Its announcement named Epic and Meditech and paired cloud infrastructure with migration and managed services. Virtustream executive Scott Millard described the aim as bringing capabilities used for SAP into healthcare.
The technical rationale was workload fit. Virtustream characterized these legacy EMR applications as especially intensive in input/output (I/O) and memory, and argued that they could be difficult to place on undifferentiated commodity public-cloud infrastructure. That is Virtustream’s positioning in the launch announcement, not a general finding that Epic or Meditech cannot run on other cloud platforms.
Could it host Epic or Meditech?
Yes, the announcement specifically targeted Epic and Meditech applications. Virtustream presented its offer as hosting plus associated migration and managed operations, rather than infrastructure alone. It said customers could onboard applications in public-cloud environments alongside on-premises and off-premises managed services, with migration support intended to avoid rewriting applications.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
The announcement does not establish which Epic or Meditech versions, modules, configurations, or customer environments were supported, nor does it provide a current compatibility or certification list. Organizations evaluating a deployment would need to confirm those details, along with vendor support requirements, with Virtustream and the relevant application vendor.
What the HIPAA/HITECH and availability claims mean
CRN reported that Virtustream described the launch environment as HIPAA/HITECH-compliant and cited service and infrastructure availability SLAs of up to 99.999 percent. “Up to” matters: this was a maximum figure reported for the historical launch, not a universal guarantee for every workload, customer, or contract. The announcement summary does not specify covered services, measurement windows, exclusions, remedies, or whether the figure applies to application-level availability.

A cloud provider’s compliance claims also do not by themselves establish that a healthcare organization’s complete system is compliant. Buyers need to understand the division of responsibilities for the application, data, access controls, integrations, operations, and any required agreements. The launch claim is not a substitute for reviewing current contractual terms and the organization’s own compliance obligations.
Migration, hybrid deployment and VMware integration
Migration and managed operations
Virtustream’s proposition combined migration assistance with ongoing operations, aiming to move complex applications without requiring a rewrite. This approach is relevant where an organization wants to preserve a legacy application and its operating model while changing where it runs. The announcement does not provide a standard migration timeline, workload-by-workload process, or a guarantee that every environment can move without application changes.

Hybrid environments
The launch described onboarding in public-cloud environments alongside on-premises and off-premises managed services. This indicates a hybrid operating model rather than a requirement to move every component into one location. The EMC acquisition announcement also described Virtustream as focused on I/O-intensive, mission-critical enterprise applications, with service-level commitments spanning infrastructure availability, application performance, and transaction latency. Those corporate-level descriptions provide platform context, not healthcare-specific terms for a particular customer.
VMware connection
Virtustream’s Enterprise Cloud Connector for VMware vRealize Automation was designed to let VMware customers extend virtualized mission-critical workloads to Virtustream resources. EMC’s acquisition announcement said xStream was integrated with VMware vSphere. These points indicate integration with VMware-based environments; they do not establish that every VMware configuration or workflow is supported in the healthcare service.

What healthcare customer evidence is available
A February 2021 Virtustream announcement named OmniSYS as a customer using Virtustream Enterprise Cloud and xStreamCare for pharmacy software during the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rollout. The release said OmniSYS supports half of U.S. retail pharmacies and described the need to keep systems available while scaling with demand. This is a concrete healthcare-related example of cloud and managed-services use, but it is not evidence that OmniSYS ran Epic or Meditech on the service.
Virtustream’s 2020 xStreamCare announcement described broader migration and operations services, including system-copy services for SAP and custom operating-system image management. Those examples illustrate the wider managed-services model; they are not proof of particular healthcare capabilities.

How to interpret Virtustream’s published ROI figure
A 2021 Virtustream release cited a Virtustream-sponsored IDC study reporting more than 340 percent average three-year return on investment among surveyed Virtustream customers. This was sponsored research across surveyed customers, not a healthcare-specific result, and should not be treated as a forecast for an Epic, Meditech, or other healthcare deployment.
What a buyer should verify before relying on the launch claims
- Whether Virtustream currently offers the relevant healthcare hosting service in the buyer’s geography, and whether the intended Epic or Meditech configuration is supported.
- The exact SLA for the proposed services: what is measured, how availability is calculated, what exclusions apply, and what remedies the contract provides.
- Which security and compliance controls Virtustream supplies, which remain the customer’s responsibility, and what contractual documentation is available for the specific deployment.
- How migration, testing, cutover, rollback, backups, disaster recovery, and ongoing application operations are scoped and priced in the proposal.
- How the proposed environment connects to existing VMware, on-premises, and other cloud systems, including support boundaries for each component.
