Virata’s Azurite was a 2001 chipset package for manufacturers building VoIP gateways, not a standalone consumer phone adapter. It paired one of Virata’s communications processors with a Texas Instruments DSP and Virata voice software, aiming to bring networking and voice functions into a compact gateway design and shorten development time.
What was Virata’s Azurite?
Virata introduced Azurite in November 2001 as an integrated VoIP chipset package for original-equipment manufacturers. The package combined a Virata Helium 210-80 or Nitrogen 210-80 communications processor, a Texas Instruments C54xx digital signal processor (DSP), and Virata voice software. EDN’s launch report described it as a two-chip solution: the processor and DSP supplied the hardware, while the associated software provided voice and gateway capabilities.
Azurite was aimed at the builders of consumer, small-office/home-office, small-to-medium-enterprise, and enterprise networking equipment. It was not simply a voice-only chip: the integration was intended to help equipment makers add telephony to network gateways.
How did Azurite integrate voice into DSL gateways?
The package brought communications processing, voice processing, and software together for equipment that connected local networks and telephone lines. Virata’s listed capabilities included:
#1 Best Overall
- Expand Your Phone System with 2 Ports: This VoIP gateway adapter offers 2 standard RJ11 ports, allowing you to connect up to two separate analog phones or fax machines to your network. Perfect for a home office setup, it effectively bridges your existing phone hardware with modern internet phone services without requiring complex configuration.
- Compatible with SIP V2 Protocol: Built to support the widely adopted SIP V2 protocol, this internet phone adapter ensures seamless and reliable connectivity with most major VoIP service providers. It provides a stable and clear communication platform for both personal and business calls, eliminating the need for a dedicated computer to make calls.
- Easy Plug and Play Setup: Simply connect the included network cable between the adapter and your router, then plug in your analog phone. The device is pre-configured for easy installation, so you can start making internet phone calls in minutes. It is ideal for users seeking a straightforward upgrade from traditional phone lines to an IP phone system.
- Compact Design for Home or Office: The streamlined and ultra-compact chassis is designed to fit discreetly on your desk, shelf, or mount on a wall. Its small footprint saves valuable workspace, making it an excellent choice for home offices, small business environments, or any space where a full-sized enterprise system is unnecessary.
- Reliable Network Adapter for Consistent Calls: As a dedicated phone adapter, it maintains consistent call quality and connection stability. This compact device ensures your calls remain clear and uninterrupted, providing a dependable communication solution for work, with direct connectivity to your network router for optimized performance.
- 10/100 Ethernet, HomePNA, and home-wireless interfaces.
- MGCP and H.248/MEGACO signaling support for controlling voice sessions.
- A dynamic jitter buffer to manage variation in packet arrival times.
- A patent-pending lost-packet compensation scheme intended to mitigate the effects of missing voice packets.
These features were relevant to gateways carrying voice over broadband connections: signaling handled call control, while buffering and packet-loss compensation addressed common impairments in packet-based voice. The reports identify these capabilities but do not provide independent test results or quantify call-quality improvements.
Target equipment
Virata’s target devices included home routers, multi-service gateways, and integrated access devices. A related launch report described a small-business or home-office gateway combining a local-area network and as many as four analog telephone lines over one SHDSL connection. That report framed the design as a way to bring voice and data services together in a single gateway.

What did Virata claim Azurite could save?
Virata said the integrated package could reduce a typical gateway development cycle from 12–18 months to about 3–6 months. Lee Beckstrom, Virata’s voice-products manager, described the shorter schedule as an estimate for a company using the Azurite two-chip VoIP solution, not as an independently measured result.
The separate launch report also recorded historical company claims of $95 in parts cost per gateway for Azurite, compared with $130 for a multi-vendor solution. It listed a one-time software license of $135,000 and no per-unit royalties. These figures describe Virata’s 2001 commercial claims; they are not current prices, a present-day cost comparison, or a verified total-cost analysis.

Was Azurite a VoIP gateway chip?
It is more accurate to call Azurite an integrated chipset package for gateway makers than a single gateway chip. Its processor, DSP, and software were building blocks for OEM equipment; the finished router or access device still had to be designed and produced by a manufacturer. That distinction matters when comparing Azurite with a complete retail ATA or VoIP gateway, which is a finished product rather than an embedded chipset platform.

What does the 2001 launch tell us about the VoIP market?
Virata positioned integration as a way to make VoIP gateway development quicker and less expensive. EDN also reported a Probe Research forecast cited by Beckstrom: nearly $20 billion in worldwide VoIP network spending. That was a 2005 forecast, not a measured market result, and should be read as contemporary market context rather than evidence that the forecast came true.
The available later category context is distinct from Azurite: D2 Technologies issued a 2021 release about integrated VoIP software on a networking system-on-chip. It illustrates that combining networking and voice functions remained a product category, but it does not establish a Virata successor or a relationship between the companies. D2 Technologies’ release is about its own offering.
