Video game age ratings are decision aids: they suggest age suitability and flag content or features parents may want to check, but they do not guarantee that a game is right for a particular child or list everything in it. In the United States, the main system is ESRB; labels and rules vary by country and storefront, so use the system shown in your region.

What do video game age ratings mean?

For U.S. games, ESRB uses three separate kinds of information. Read them together, because each answers a different question.

  • Rating Category: a suggested age-suitability level.
  • Content Descriptors: types of content that may have contributed to the category or may matter to parents. Descriptors are relative to the category and are not a complete inventory of everything in the game.
  • Interactive Elements: notices about features such as online interaction, purchases, random-item purchases, location sharing, or unrestricted internet access. These do not affect the age-rating assignment.

ESRB says Content Descriptors “are applied relative to the Rating Category assigned and are not intended to be a complete listing of content.” Its guide also explains that Interactive Elements highlight features that may concern parents but “do not influence the rating assignment of a product.” ESRB rating guide.

What do ESRB’s age categories mean?

The current U.S. ESRB categories provide a quick suitability threshold, not a promise that every child of that age is ready for or will enjoy the game. ESRB’s general age guidance is:

ESRB category General guidance
Everyone Generally suitable for all ages
Everyone 10+ Generally suitable for ages 10 and up
Teen Generally suitable for ages 13 and up
Mature 17+ Generally suitable for ages 17 and up
Adults Only 18+ For adults 18 and older

For any specific game, check its descriptors and rating details rather than relying on the category alone. ESRB’s current guide gives category definitions and content examples.

What does E10+ mean?

E10+ is the short form often used for ESRB’s Everyone 10+ category. ESRB describes it as generally suitable for ages 10 and up. The label is guidance, not an individual assessment of a child; read the game’s descriptors and further details to decide whether its content fits your family.

Where do I find out what’s actually in a game?

  1. Check the package or store page. For a physical game, look at the front and back of the box. For a digital game, check its storefront listing before buying or installing.
  2. Read the category, descriptors, and Interactive Elements separately. Consider which specific content and features matter for your child, including online interaction and purchasing.
  3. Search the title with ESRB. Use the ESRB ratings lookup and read the Rating Summary when one is available. ESRB says summaries for many physical games provide fuller descriptions and context; they can also be found through its free mobile app.
  4. Investigate questions the rating does not settle. A trustworthy review or gameplay footage can help answer family-specific questions about tone, play, or how a feature works.

Digital games and apps rated through the IARC questionnaire process do not receive ESRB Rating Summaries through that digital process. A descriptor is still not intended to list every content detail.

Are video game ratings the same in every country?

No. ESRB is the U.S. example, not a global standard. Other regions display their own systems, including PEGI and Australian classifications; their labels and legal implications do not necessarily match ESRB categories one-for-one. IARC’s ratings definitions show how regional systems differ.

Australia illustrates why a number should not be converted mechanically between systems: IARC says its M classification is recommended for people aged 15 and over but has no legal restriction, whereas MA 15+ is legally restricted to people aged 15 and over, subject to an adult-accompaniment exception for younger children. Check the authority and rules relevant to the region where the game is sold or played.

Does a rating tell me if a game has online chat or loot boxes?

Check the Interactive Elements, not just the age category. ESRB notices can flag Users Interact, In-Game Purchases, In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), Shares Location, and Unrestricted Internet. These identify features for parents to consider, but do not change the category. A notice about interaction is not, by itself, a full description of a game’s chat tools or how players use them.

How are game ratings assigned?

Physical retail games

ESRB says publishers submit a content questionnaire and video showing typical gameplay, missions, cutscenes, and the most extreme content. At least three trained raters review the footage and recommend a category, descriptors, and Interactive Elements. The recommendation is evaluated and confirmed; a publisher may accept it or revise the content and resubmit. ESRB may play-test a game after release to check whether the disclosure was complete.

Digital games and apps

For digital games, developers complete an IARC-developed questionnaire before release. The process assigns ratings for participating authorities and storefronts, including the relevant regional category, descriptors, and Interactive Elements. ESRB says digital ratings can be monitored and tested after release and adjusted when necessary; the questionnaire process does not make a rating an infallible or exhaustive account of a game.

Downloadable content

In most cases, the base game’s rating applies to downloadable content. If an add-on exceeds the core product’s rating, ESRB says it must be submitted and may receive a different rating. ESRB’s rating-process explanation covers physical, digital, and downloadable content.

What should parents check before a child plays?

  • Confirm the rating on the box or the current digital storefront page.
  • Use the descriptors to assess the kinds of content that matter in your household; do not treat them as a complete content list.
  • Check Interactive Elements for online interaction, purchases, random items, location sharing, and internet access.
  • Look up the title and its Rating Summary if available. Use a review or gameplay footage for questions that remain.
  • Discuss expectations with the child and set household limits. Device parental controls can offer tools for rating access, play time, spending, and internet use, but the available controls and setup menus depend on the device. Follow the device maker’s current instructions; ESRB’s parent tools page provides further guidance.
