How do you use units, objectives, and campaign orders in Battleplan? Start by reading the scenario briefing, then build mixed formations, assign each zone a realistic mission, and keep a reserve for emergencies. Battleplan is an operational-level World War II strategy game: you direct formations across a battle area, coordinate combined arms, protect routes and supply, and adapt plans as the situation changes. It is not a nation-building game with a nationwide economy or diplomacy layer.
Matrix Games’ October 2, 2026 preview announced a launch package of 11 historical missions, covering the D-Day landings through Operation Varsity, plus two tutorial levels. The same preview describes campaign progression through army customization, officer recruitment, historical-unit unlocks, and consequences that carry between battles. Those are announced features; exact unit values and mission content can change in later patches.
What Battleplan asks you to manage
Each scenario represents a specific World War II operation, generally lasting about two weeks in the game’s timeline. You plan offensives, assign formations to sectors, combine infantry with armor and support weapons, and decide when to advance, hold, or give up ground. You are managing an army in a battle area rather than running a country.

The most important beginner habit is to think in local problems. A division that is powerful on paper can fail if it is spread across too much frontage, attacking uphill, or moving without the support types that make it effective. Conversely, a smaller force can hold a key route when terrain, fortifications, elevation, and reserves are used correctly.

Before every battle: read the briefing and identify the real objective
There is no single victory condition that applies to every mission. The official material does not establish that every scenario is won by capturing the same amount of territory or destroying every enemy unit. At the start of each battle, inspect the mission briefing and the currently listed objectives. Treat those objectives, not a generic rule of “take the map,” as your decision framework.
A five-minute briefing check
- Read every objective and its wording. Note whether the requirement concerns a location, a route, a time limit, survival, or a combination of conditions.
- Mark the terrain around each objective. Towns, forests, elevation changes, beaches, wetlands, and swamps affect movement, defence, and firepower differently.
- Find the routes that connect objectives. Roads, depots, crossings, and narrow approaches are more useful than isolated ground if they let you move reserves or protect supply.
- Estimate the frontage you can actually hold. A long line with too few troops creates gaps and makes a breakthrough difficult to stop.
- Choose a reserve area before issuing attacks. Headquarters and support elements can remain behind the forward line, ready to reinforce a threatened zone.
Write a short plan in plain language before deploying: for example, “Hold the wooded ridge, seize the road junction, and keep one headquarters and an engineer formation behind the centre.” The exact wording is yours; the discipline of defining priorities is what matters.
How unit roles fit together
Battleplan rewards mixed forces. A June 12, 2026 developer diary says different unit types within roughly one square kilometre provide nearby friendly units with stat bonuses. Those support bonuses do not stack, and a unit does not grant its own same-type bonus to itself. The practical implication is to combine complementary roles rather than surrounding one unit with several copies of the same support provider.
| Unit or group | Primary beginner use | Developer-published support effect |
|---|---|---|
| Infantry, mechanized infantry, and paratroopers | Hold ground, attack through difficult terrain, and provide infantry support to nearby distinct unit types. | Infantry support gives nearby friendlies +20% defence and +30% morale. |
| Light and medium tanks | Exploit openings, add mobile firepower, and support attacks where movement is practical. | Tank support gives +25% damage and +30% morale. |
| Heavy tanks | Anchor a decisive attack or a hard defensive position when their weight can be brought to bear. | Heavy-tank support gives +50% damage, +10% defence, and +50% morale. |
| Engineers | Prepare positions, clear or lay mines, and improve the effectiveness of attacks against fortifications. | Engineers provide mine immunity, improve fortification destruction and entrenchment, and can clear mines. |
| Scouts and reconnaissance | Extend movement support and reveal enemies beyond the frontline when reconnaissance spots them. | Scout support increases nearby movement speed by 50%. |
| Anti-tank guns and artillery | Stop armored threats and provide ranged support. Artillery can bombard from a distance. | Both provide support-gun benefits; artillery barrages weaken as enemies find cover. |
| Headquarters | Coordinate nearby friendly units and keep formations under officer command. | Headquarters provide support; every formation requires an officer in a headquarters. |
The percentages above are figures published by the developer in 2026 and are therefore patch-sensitive. Use them to understand the design, but check current in-game values after updates.
Build for a task, not for a universal “best” army
A force for a wooded defensive line should not look like a force for a fast road advance. Infantry and engineers are valuable when you must hold or clear difficult ground. Tanks and scouts matter more when open routes let them move. Anti-tank guns become a priority when the briefing or enemy composition indicates an armored threat. Artillery is most useful when a target cannot simply disappear into cover and when your attack benefits from preparation.

Because support does not stack, placing several identical providers together wastes opportunities. A tank supported by infantry, scouts, engineers, and artillery can gain several distinct advantages; five tanks do not multiply the tank-support bonus on the same unit.
Formations, headquarters, and deployment weight
Headquarters are not decorative. Formations require an officer-led headquarters, so include one when restructuring a force or assigning it to a plan. Keep headquarters close enough to support the units they command but far enough back that a single breakthrough does not remove your coordination layer.
Each mission sets a total deployment weight. Before a battle, you can restructure your available units and decide which formations fit that limit. A powerful formation that exceeds the mission’s weight is not a plan; it is an unavailable option. Compare combat value with the space it consumes, and reserve enough weight for the command and support elements required by the mission.
Timeline orders and Zone Orders
Battleplan offers the earlier Timeline orders and an optional system called Zone Orders. The developer introduced Zone Orders as “an OPTIONAL way of commanding your troops in addition to the previously described TIMELINE orders.” Use Timeline orders when you need a sequence of actions over time; use Zone Orders when you want a clear area-based plan that assigns regiments to sectors.
How a Regimental Plan works
- Draw the operational area. Outline the section of the map where the plan will operate.
- Let the game divide it into zones. The zones are based on the regiments available to the plan.
- Assign regiments to zones. Put the units needed for each local task into the appropriate sector.
- Place headquarters and support in reserve when appropriate. They can remain in a safer reserve area instead of being committed to the first line.
- Choose a tactic for each zone. Seize Ground and Balanced Hold produce different behavior.
- Read the zone information panel. Check allocated units, local enemy strength, participating divisions, soldier counts, elevation change, and difficult-terrain indicators.
- Resize or reinforce weak zones. If the attack or defence prediction is poor, allocate more troops or draw a smaller zone.
- Execute, observe, and revise. Zone boundaries can be adjusted during execution as enemy positions and local strength change.
Seize Ground
Seize Ground is the aggressive choice. It tells the assigned force to push for territory even when the advance demands concentrated combat power. Use it where the objective is time-sensitive, the route is favorable, or you have enough local strength to absorb losses. Do not assign it automatically to every zone; an aggressive order on a weak flank can turn a manageable line into a breakthrough.

Balanced Hold
Balanced Hold advances only when the developer-described conditions are favorable: flanks are secure and the units are not outnumbered. It suits a measured advance behind a stable line. If the panel shows that a zone is exposed, outnumbered, or climbing through difficult terrain, Balanced Hold may wait rather than spending the formation in a low-probability attack.
How to interpret the prediction panels
The attack and defence panels are estimates, not guarantees. Use them as a structured comparison between your allocated force and the local enemy. A weak attack prediction means you should add troops, add a complementary support type, improve the approach, or reduce the zone. A weak defence prediction means shorten the frontage, move to better terrain, reinforce the sector, or hold a reserve where it can arrive quickly.
Defensive planning that survives contact
Deploying a unit in a good position before the mission begins matters because units gain fortifications when the mission starts. Stationary units continue digging, and engineers can create more effective entrenchments. Fortifications improve defence and firepower, but combat degrades them; artillery and air attacks can damage them faster.
Use terrain for a reason
- Towns and forests: improve defence and firepower but slow movement.
- Higher ground: improves visibility and provides firepower and defence benefits.
- Swamps and wetlands: impose broad penalties and should not be treated as neutral open ground.
- Beaches: can impose broad penalties, making an exposed landing or counterattack especially demanding.
- Difficult terrain: appears in the zone information panel and should influence the size and composition of the assigned force.
If you cannot cover a wide line, give up some ground and hold a shorter, more favorable front. The developer’s defence diary summarizes this with the deliberately humorous line, “Defending everything is the same as defending nothing,” attributed there as “Sun Tzu, probably.” It is useful advice, not an authenticated quotation from Sun Tzu.
Mines, engineers, and routes
Minefields penalize units moving through them. Engineers can lay mines for defence and clear them for an advance, while their mine immunity lets them operate where other formations are slowed. Put engineers where they can influence the route that actually matters rather than leaving them at the extreme edge of a front that will never move.

Keep a reserve
A reserve is a formation deliberately held back to respond to a breakthrough, protect a depot, reinforce an objective, or restore a damaged line. Place it near the routes it must use, but outside the first enemy bombardment zone. Headquarters and support elements can be part of this reserve; committing every useful unit to the opening line removes your ability to react.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Campaign setup and progression
At campaign start, create a fictional officer, select a country, and create a fictional corps. The selected country determines the starting division. The campaign allows recruitment from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Before the first tutorial, you receive an infantry division containing infantry, anti-tank guns, artillery, engineers, anti-air guns, and several headquarters. That starting force is designed to teach combined arms: infantry holds, guns answer specific threats, artillery supports from range, engineers alter the terrain problem, and headquarters keep formations under officer command.
Requisition and recruitment
Missions award requisition. Spend it to recruit additional formations, but compare every purchase with the mission’s deployment-weight limit and your existing gaps. A new formation is valuable when it solves a recurring problem—such as a shortage of engineers, mobile infantry, or anti-armor capability—not merely because its name is prestigious.
Historical divisions and officers
Historical divisions and officers become recruitable after missions in which they appeared. You can also create custom formations. This creates a gradual campaign arc: early battles teach the basic roles, successful missions expand the pool, and later army construction lets you tailor the corps to the operations still ahead.

A repeatable beginner battle workflow
- Briefing: identify the exact objectives, timing, and any locations or routes that must be protected.
- Map reading: mark elevation, towns, forests, difficult terrain, mines, depots, and likely approach routes.
- Force design: fit a headquarters-led mixed force inside the deployment-weight limit.
- Deployment: place defenders on favorable terrain, engineers where fortifications or mines matter, and the reserve behind the threatened sector.
- Plan: draw Regimental Plan areas, divide them into zones, assign regiments, and select Seize Ground or Balanced Hold according to local conditions.
- Check: read attack and defence predictions. Reinforce weak zones or make them smaller before execution.
- Execute: watch for enemy movement, artillery effects, damaged fortifications, and exposed flanks.
- Adapt: adjust zone boundaries, commit the reserve only when its intervention changes the local balance, and protect the route to the objective rather than chasing every enemy unit.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Spreading a small force across the whole map
Symptom: every sector contains a few units, but none can resist a concentrated attack. Fix: shorten the front, concede less important ground, and concentrate enough strength around the objective and its approaches.
Using one unit type as the entire solution
Symptom: identical units are grouped together, yet the force lacks movement, anti-armor, engineering, or morale support. Fix: add distinct complementary types and remember that same-type support does not stack.
Ignoring the prediction panel
Symptom: a zone attack collapses immediately or a defensive sector is outnumbered. Fix: compare local strength before execution, reduce the zone, reinforce it, or choose a more cautious tactic.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Putting headquarters in the first line
Symptom: a breakthrough removes command and support at the moment the front needs them most. Fix: keep headquarters close enough to support but use a reserve area when the terrain and mission allow it.
Treating every objective as a territory race
Symptom: you capture ground that does not advance the briefing’s requirements while exposing a key route. Fix: reread the scenario objectives and prioritize the locations, routes, and timing conditions they actually specify.
Leaving engineers idle or unsupported
Symptom: attacks stall in minefields or fortifications remain intact. Fix: attach engineers to the route where clearing, mine immunity, entrenchment, or fortification destruction will change the outcome.
Keeping advice current
The launch package, unit values, and balance can change after release. The 11-mission and two-tutorial announcement comes from Matrix Games’ October 2, 2026 preview, while the support percentages and the roughly one-square-kilometre proximity rule come from 2026 developer diaries. Treat those figures as the developer’s published values for that period, not permanent constants. After a patch, verify the current briefing, unit tooltips, support descriptions, and prediction panels before relying on an old plan.
