Neither VHF nor UHF is universally better. Choose based first on the radio service and channels you are authorized to use, then on the route, terrain, antenna height, buildings, interference and whether your system uses a repeater. In the United States, a radio’s ability to tune a frequency does not itself grant permission to transmit on it.

What VHF and UHF mean

VHF and UHF are broad frequency ranges, not single channels or interchangeable consumer-radio services. For U.S. land-mobile planning, NTIA identifies VHF high band as 138–174 MHz and UHF bands including 406.1–420 MHz and 450–512 MHz. These are allocation references, not blanket authorization to transmit. See NTIA’s land-mobile spectrum planning material.

Frequency allocations and operating permissions vary by jurisdiction and service. This comparison uses U.S. regulatory examples; elsewhere, check the relevant national regulator and local rules.

Which works better: VHF or UHF?

There is no reliable universal winner or distance figure. Whether a particular link works depends on the frequency and equipment, but also on the terrain profile, obstructions, antenna pattern and height, interference, and surroundings. NTIA’s Irregular Terrain Model guide describes propagation modeling as a planning aid, not a guarantee that a specific handheld radio link will work.

As a result, claims such as “VHF always reaches farther” or “UHF always works better indoors” are too broad. Building penetration and antenna patterns can be part of a propagation estimate; the result depends on the particular path and setup. A band label or advertised range cannot establish coverage in your building, worksite or route.

How to choose for your situation

Start with the authorized service and channels

Identify the radio service, exact assigned frequencies or channels, country, and operator requirements before choosing equipment. Confirm that the radio is permitted and appropriately certified for that service and supports the channels you need. In the United States, the FCC has warned about VHF/UHF equipment capable of operating outside amateur allocations; amateur operation requires a license and compliance with applicable rules. A “dual-band” label does not authorize use of every frequency the radio can tune. Consult the FCC equipment and compliance advisory and current service-specific requirements.

PoC + Analog Two-Way Radio with GPS & SOS – Nationwide Push-to-Talk Over Cellular, 8W VHF/UHF Walkie Talkie (136-174MHz & 400-490MHz), Pre-Installed SIM, Multi-Carrier Network (Green, 5288 Plus)
  • DUAL MODE POC + ANALOG COMMUNICATION: Combines Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) with 8W VHF/UHF analog radio operation, giving users the flexibility to communicate nationwide through cellular networks or locally through traditional radio frequencies.
  • BUILT-IN GPS TRACKING & SOS EMERGENCY ALERT: Integrated GPS positioning enables real-time location tracking through the GLOBAL-PTT dispatch platform. The dedicated SOS emergency button provides instant emergency alerts, enhancing worker safety and team coordination.
  • HIGH-POWER 8-WATT ANALOG RADIO: Featuring a powerful 8W transmitter, the 5288Plus delivers strong, reliable analog communication on both 136-174MHz VHF and 400-490MHz UHF frequencies, ideal for large job sites and rural areas.
  • PRE-INSTALLED SIM & NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: Each radio comes with a pre-installed IoT SIM card and automatically connects to the strongest available carrier, providing seamless Push-to-Talk communication across the country without repeaters.
  • MULTI-CARRIER NETWORK AUTO SELECTION: The radio automatically selects the best available network for maximum coverage and reliability, helping teams stay connected even in challenging coverage areas.

Evaluate the coverage path

Consider where the radios will be used: indoors or outdoors, across open ground or uneven terrain, and with what obstructions between antennas. Antenna location and height above nearby terrain can materially affect signal attenuation. For a fixed installation or critical coverage need, a site-specific assessment is more useful than a generic VHF-versus-UHF range claim.

Check for a repeater or network

If you need coverage beyond a direct radio-to-radio path, find out whether an authorized repeater or network is available and whether your radio supports its channel plan and technical configuration. The FCC’s 1995 public-safety report says a repeater system “can provide greater geographic coverage than land mobile systems not employing repeaters.” That describes the system’s potential, not a guarantee for every site or radio. The report is historical and concerns public-safety land-mobile systems.

  • GPS + LOCATION SHARING (APP + RADIO) – Built-in GPS with location tools and sharing between the radio and app (radio↔app) for better coordination during events, field work, and off-grid activities.

Match the equipment to the use

Once the service and system are settled, compare the radio’s supported frequencies, antenna, power, battery, durability, accessories and support against your actual requirements. If coverage depends on an external antenna, make sure its frequency range and connector match the radio and installation; a generic antenna recommendation is not enough.

Why power and advertised range do not settle the choice

A transmitter’s power is only one factor in a link, and historical figures should not be mistaken for current product specifications. The FCC’s 1995 public-safety report described portable handheld units in that context as typically using 2–6 watts, base stations 50–100 watts, and vehicle mobile units up to 100 watts. Those figures describe the report’s historical public-safety context, not a universal recommendation, a present-day consumer-radio specification or a range guarantee. The report also noted that handheld units had very small antennas.

For a practical decision, ask what coverage the authorized system provides on the route or inside the buildings you care about, and how it was assessed. No single miles-or-kilometers comparison applies across different radios, antennas, terrain, buildings and services.

U.S. frequency and rule checks

NTIA’s United States Frequency Allocation Chart page reports a September 2025 update based on data as of March 2025. Allocations and service rules can change; check the current chart, FCC rules and local requirements before operating or selecting equipment. The chart is a reference, not a substitute for determining whether a particular operator and radio may use a particular frequency.
