Vertex Pharmaceuticals is still overwhelmingly a cystic-fibrosis company by sales, but the oft-repeated 96% figure is no longer the best description of its latest results. Vertex reported $11,970.6 million in 2025 product revenue. Disclosed product categories imply that about 98.5% came from CF medicines, while the non-CF portfolio began contributing meaningful revenue through CASGEVY and JOURNAVX. A potential renal launch, povetacicept, and programs in kidney disease, type 1 diabetes, pain and rare disorders could add further pillars. The shift will be gradual: CF products continue to generate a very large and growing cash base, so new medicines must reach substantial scale before the percentage moves materially.
Is Vertex’s 96% cystic-fibrosis figure still accurate?
The 96% statistic should be treated as a historical or rounded description. Vertex’s 2025 product table supports a higher calculated CF share because nearly all revenue outside the two named non-CF launches was still generated by CF products.
| 2025 product category | Revenue (USD millions) | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO | 10,312.7 | CFTR modulator franchise |
| ALYFTREK | 837.8 | Once-daily CFTR modulator |
| CASGEVY | 115.8 | Gene-edited therapy for sickle-cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia |
| JOURNAVX | 59.6 | Oral non-opioid treatment for acute pain |
| Other CF products within “other product revenues” | 644.7 | KALYDECO, ORKAMBI and SYMDEKO/SYMKEVI |
Adding TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO, ALYFTREK and the remaining CF products gives approximately $11,795.2 million, or 98.5% of the $11,970.6 million product total. That is a calculation from Vertex’s disclosed categories, not a percentage the company reported as a standalone metric.

Why does cystic fibrosis remain such a powerful franchise?
Vertex’s CF medicines address the underlying CFTR defect rather than treating only symptoms. TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO reaches a large share of eligible treated patients in the company’s core markets, and ALYFTREK adds a newer once-daily option while extending the franchise to additional ages and geographies.
The commercial model is also unusually established. Patients receive recurring prescriptions through existing reimbursement channels, and Vertex has built manufacturing, distribution and clinical infrastructure around the disease. Those characteristics help explain why each new CF product can be layered onto a large cash-generating base instead of starting from zero.
How is CASGEVY changing Vertex’s business mix?
CASGEVY is Vertex’s ex-vivo, non-viral CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited therapy for severe sickle-cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. It creates a cell-therapy business with high value per treated patient, but its delivery process is far more complex than dispensing a tablet.
- Vertex recorded $115.8 million in 2025 CASGEVY revenue from 64 infused patients.
- By year-end, 147 people globally had undergone first cell collection, and approximately 90% of U.S. patients had reimbursed access.
- Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $76 million, up 78% sequentially and 151% year over year.
- The therapy had approvals in 39 countries, and a U.S. pediatric approval expanded potential eligibility by approximately 5,500 patients.
Every treatment requires cell collection, conditioning chemotherapy, manufacturing and infusion at a qualified center. Consequently, reimbursed access and the number and throughput of capable treatment centers can constrain revenue even when clinical demand is strong.

Can JOURNAVX become a larger-volume business?
JOURNAVX (suzetrigine) uses a different scaling model. It is an oral, selective, non-opioid NaV1.8 inhibitor approved for adults with moderate-to-severe acute pain, so prescriptions can flow through hospitals and retail pharmacies rather than specialized cell-therapy centers.
- JOURNAVX generated $59.6 million in 2025 and $50 million in the second quarter of 2026.
- Approximately 900,000 prescriptions were filled during the first half of 2026.
- About 260 million people in the United States had reimbursed access across commercial and government payers.
Its key commercial question is formulary uptake and sustained prescribing across acute-pain episodes. That is a payer and physician-adoption challenge, not a manufacturing-throughput challenge of the kind CASGEVY faces.
What is povetacicept, and why could it matter?
Povetacicept is Vertex’s most visible near-term opportunity to build another major franchise. The company has begun a rolling U.S. biologics application for IgA nephropathy, received FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation and is studying the same BAFF/APRIL mechanism in primary membranous nephropathy and generalized myasthenia gravis.

Vertex describes the asset as having “pipeline-in-a-product” potential because one medicine could address several immune-mediated diseases. It remains a future opportunity: regulatory review, approval and launch execution must occur before it can contribute product revenue.

Which other programs could broaden Vertex beyond CF?
The pipeline spreads scientific and commercial exposure across several areas:
- Kidney disease: inaxaplin for APOL1-mediated kidney disease and VX-407 for a subset of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
- Type 1 diabetes: zimislecel, a stem-cell-derived islet therapy.
- Neuromuscular disease: VX-670 for myotonic dystrophy type 1.
- Pain: additional neuropathic-pain programs alongside JOURNAVX.
- CF technology: next-generation correctors and messenger-RNA approaches intended to extend the existing franchise.
These programs diversify Vertex’s scientific exposure, but most are not yet revenue-generating and remain subject to clinical, manufacturing and regulatory risk.

How fast can Vertex’s revenue concentration change?
Vertex’s 2026 outlook illustrates why the percentage will move slowly even as non-CF sales grow. The company raised total-revenue guidance to $13.1 billion–$13.2 billion and, in its earlier 2026 outlook, expected at least $500 million from non-CF products.
| Franchise | Latest disclosed revenue signal | Delivery and scaling model | Primary near-term constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| CF products | Approximately 98.5% of 2025 product revenue by calculation | Recurring prescriptions through established care and reimbursement | Maintaining growth while refreshing a mature franchise |
| CASGEVY | $115.8 million in 2025; $76 million in Q2 2026 | Individualized cell collection, manufacturing and infusion | Center capacity and reimbursement execution |
| JOURNAVX | $59.6 million in 2025; $50 million in Q2 2026 | Oral prescriptions through hospitals and pharmacies | Formulary coverage and repeat adoption |
| Povetacicept | Pre-launch; rolling U.S. biologics application | Potential biologic franchise in several immune-mediated diseases | Regulatory decision and launch execution |
As CEO Reshma Kewalramani, M.D., put it: “Vertex delivered excellent second quarter results, expanding our leadership in cystic fibrosis; delivering strong revenue growth in sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia, and acute pain.” That describes a company adding commercial pillars without yet displacing its original one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does CASGEVY revenue depend on treatment centers?
Patients must move through a sequence of cell collection, conditioning, individualized manufacturing and infusion. A shortage of qualified centers or delays in reimbursement can therefore postpone revenue even after a patient is identified.

Is JOURNAVX intended for chronic pain treatment?
Its approval is for adults with moderate-to-severe acute pain. The product’s commercial opportunity comes from repeated episodes across a broad population rather than from a chronic-disease maintenance prescription.
What does FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation mean for povetacicept?
It identifies a medicine for an important condition when preliminary evidence suggests substantial improvement over available options and provides a framework for closer FDA interaction. It does not itself authorize marketing or guarantee approval.
Why can a growing non-CF business leave the CF percentage high?
The denominator is a very large CF franchise led by TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO and ALYFTREK. New products can post strong year-over-year growth while still representing a small fraction of total product revenue until their absolute sales become much larger.
