There is no well-supported four-way winner: the available official information documents Veo’s generation controls, describes Runway as a create-and-edit workspace, does not establish Kling’s current capabilities, and confirms that Sora is discontinued. For a new project, start with the workflow you need—generated audio and detailed clip guidance, an integrated creative workspace, or a service you can currently use—and verify the specific plan and access route before committing.
How do Veo, Runway, Kling, and Sora compare?
| Service | What the available official information establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Google Veo 3.1 | Google documents native audio generation, image and motion guidance, camera controls, scene extension, and 1080p or 4K output. It names several ways to access or build with Veo. | That every listed feature or resolution is available through every Google product, plan, or region. |
| Runway | Runway describes Creative as a cloud workspace for generating and editing video, images, and audio; it also lists a separate API-oriented developer platform. | Feature parity with Veo’s specific controls, or the precise capabilities of individual models. |
| Kling | It is a relevant option to investigate. | Current official features, pricing, availability, model versions, output limits, or native-audio support. |
| OpenAI Sora | OpenAI’s Help Center says the web and app experiences ended April 26, 2026, and the API ended September 24, 2026. | Availability for new work; those discontinuation dates have passed. |
The comparison is intentionally uneven where the evidence is uneven. It is not a ranking of output quality or value: current comparable prices and credit use were not established for all four services.
Which option fits your video workflow?
Choose Veo when the generation brief needs sound and direct visual guidance
Google DeepMind describes Veo 3.1 as generating sound effects, ambient audio, and dialogue natively. Its page also lists reference images for scenes, characters, or objects; style references; camera controls; first- and last-frame transitions; scene extension; outpainting; object insertion and removal; character controls; and motion controls. It says output can be 1080p or 4K. These are model-page capabilities, not a guarantee that every access route exposes every control or resolution. Google lists Gemini, Google Flow, Google Vids, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as Veo surfaces. Check the specific surface you intend to use. (Google DeepMind’s Veo page)
Audio needs a qualification: Google says that producing natural, consistent spoken audio—particularly short speech segments—remains an area of active development. If dialogue is central to the clip, treat native audio as a capability to evaluate, not an assurance of consistently finished speech. Google also says Veo videos are marked with SynthID.

Choose Runway when you want generation and editing in one cloud workspace
Runway’s product description positions Creative as a place to generate and edit video, images, and audio. That makes the platform’s integrated workspace the clearest documented reason to consider it. Runway also lists Runway Dev, an API platform with models and creative tooling for production output. The available description does not establish that Runway’s models match Veo’s listed audio or camera controls, so compare the actual tools offered in the product or API route you plan to use. Evaluate Kling only after confirming its current offer
The available official information is insufficient to make a feature, price, or availability comparison for Kling. Before selecting it, confirm its current model version, generation controls, audio behavior, output limits, supported regions, and plan terms on an official source. Do not treat a remembered specification or an unsourced comparison as a current guarantee.

Remove Sora from a shortlist for new work
OpenAI states that Sora’s web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and that its API was discontinued on September 24, 2026. For existing Sora content, OpenAI’s notice covers export, data deletion, refunds, and credits. (OpenAI Help Center: Sora discontinuation)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do the published Veo benchmarks tell you?
Google DeepMind reports that Veo 3.1 led certain preference, alignment, or visual-quality comparisons on its page, with results labeled as last updated in October 2025. The page describes evaluations using 1,003 prompts from Meta’s MovieGenBench for text-to-video comparisons, 355 image-and-text pairs from VBench for image-to-video comparisons, and 527 MovieGenBench prompts for text-to-video-and-audio comparisons. These are counts of evaluation inputs, not a universal quality score. They are Google-reported comparisons, not an independent, apples-to-apples test of Veo, Runway, Kling, and Sora or a promise about how a particular prompt will perform. (Google DeepMind’s Veo page)

- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
What should you verify before paying or building around a tool?
- Access and region: Check the current country availability, plan limits, and signup requirements for the exact product surface. Google names multiple Veo routes, but its model page does not establish that all have identical access or feature coverage.
- Cost: Compare current subscription terms, credits, and likely usable-clip costs directly in each service. A comparable price or credit-consumption figure for all four services is not established here.
- Feature-to-route match: Confirm that the interface or API you plan to use exposes the controls your project requires; a model capability does not automatically mean that every product route includes it.
- Kling status: Verify the current official feature set and terms rather than relying on a secondary comparison that may be stale.
- Dialogue quality: If spoken audio matters, evaluate short lines and consistency in the actual workflow; Google explicitly describes this as an area still in development for Veo.
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down the non-negotiable need: native audio, reference-driven direction, editing in the same workspace, API integration, or a specific output format.
- Use the comparison above to eliminate options that do not meet that need or are no longer available for new work.
- For the remaining services, verify the exact model, product surface, region, plan, and output settings you would use.
- Run the same representative prompt and edit workflow in each viable option. Judge the result on your own requirements—such as dialogue, continuity, control, and finishing effort—rather than extrapolating from another vendor’s benchmark.
