Fire OS is based on Android; Vega is a separate Linux-based platform with its own development tools and app package. Whether an app works depends on the exact Fire TV model and whether its publisher supports that platform. Check both before buying a device or expecting an app feature to carry over.
What changes between Vega OS and Fire OS?
| Question | Fire OS | Vega OS | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android. | Amazon describes Vega as Linux-based and built around React Native and the Vega development stack. | Android compatibility on Fire OS does not establish compatibility with Vega. |
| App development | Android-based app development, with Amazon-specific services and device requirements. | Vega SDK, Developer Tools, packaging, and submission. | App availability is specific to the platform and the publisher’s support. |
| App package | Fire OS app package. | Vega apps are submitted as VPKG files. | A Fire OS app may need a port or separate build for Vega. |
Amazon identifies Fire OS and Vega OS as separate operating systems in its Appstore developer documentation. Its Fire OS overview says Android apps will most likely run on Fire devices, but that statement is about Fire OS—not Vega.
Will your Fire TV apps work on Vega OS?
Do not assume they will. The official Amazon sources describe Vega’s own SDK and app binaries, but do not provide a complete, current list of consumer streaming apps available on Vega or a service-by-service feature comparison. Check the named app’s current support information or the app listing on the exact device before relying on it.
For a specific app, confirm that its publisher supports the device’s operating system, then check the features you need: playback, sign-in, live TV, discovery, purchases, or remote-control behavior. An app being available does not by itself prove feature parity with its Fire OS version.

Which Fire TV devices use Vega OS?
The Fire TV name alone does not identify the operating system. Amazon’s model table currently lists these examples:
| Amazon-listed device | Operating system in Amazon’s table |
|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025), model AFTCA002 | Vega OS 1.1 |
| Fire TV Stick HD (2026), model AFTCL001 | Vega OS 1.1 |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) | Fire OS 8 |
| Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED Series (2025), Fire TV 2-Series (2025), and Fire TV 4-Series (2025) | Fire OS 8 |
| Hisense U7 (2026), TCL QM64L Premium QD-Mini LED TV (2026), and Onida 4K Smart Fire TV (2026) | Fire OS 14 |
These are examples from Amazon’s currently published device table, not a guarantee for every regional variant or later model; Amazon notes that device and build models can vary. Confirm the full model and operating system in the device settings or Amazon’s current documentation.

What does porting a Fire OS app to Vega involve?
Amazon’s App Porting guide describes different paths based on what the developer already has:
- Fire OS WebView app: port to a Vega WebView app.
- Fire OS React Native app: port to React Native for Vega.
- Fire OS native Java or Kotlin app: convert to React Native for Vega; Amazon describes this as a full rewrite and the path requiring the most manual review.
- Web URL without source code: create a Vega WebView app.
The documented workflow can analyze source, propose a migration plan, generate code, build and validate the app, and install it on a connected device or virtual device. Amazon calls the workflow beta and says generated output may need manual adjustment for app-specific patterns or dependencies. Developers should review the generated migration guide and NextSteps file and test on real hardware before considering the result production-ready. Amazon’s July 13, 2026 Vega development guide names a Fire TV Stick 4K Select as a hardware test device and describes the Vega Virtual Device; it says Windows and WSL are not currently supported for the described Developer Tools setup.

How app listings and purchases differ
Amazon allows developers to submit Fire OS and Vega binaries under one Developer Console listing. In that setup, metadata is shared, reviews appear together, and in-app purchase items can be available to both versions. Amazon says the package names should match, and apps using in-app purchases need Vega IAP libraries integrated.
Developers can also submit separate listings. Amazon’s Vega submission guidance says metadata, purchase configuration, reviews, and retail discovery are then separate; an entitlement to the Fire OS app or its in-app purchase does not automatically transfer to a separately submitted Vega app. The guide specifies a VPKG binary and the com.amazon.category.main manifest category. Amazon says Vega submission uses the Developer Console process used for Fire OS, with the Vega device target selected. Its Vega documentation is marked open beta, so submission requirements may change.

What to check before choosing a Fire TV
- Identify the exact model. Use the full model name or number, not just “Fire TV Stick.”
- Confirm the operating system. Check Amazon’s current device table and the device’s own settings.
- Check each essential app. Confirm support with its publisher or the device’s current app listing.
- Verify the features you rely on. Look for confirmation of playback, login, live TV, purchases, and other app-specific behavior rather than assuming parity.
