On February 19, 2025, VAST Data announced native block storage for its platform and launched Event Broker, a Kafka-API-compatible service built into VAST DataEngine. The announcements position VAST as a single platform for file, object, block, table and streaming data, with storage, database and compute services for AI and analytics workloads. Event Broker is intended to connect event streams directly to those services—not to serve as a standalone Kafka product.

What VAST means by a unified AI data platform

VAST said the addition of native block storage completed an architecture covering five data types: file, object, block, table and streaming. The platform combines storage with database and virtualized compute services, with AI and analytics workloads as its stated focus.

That description is about bringing these capabilities into one platform architecture. It does not, by itself, establish that every data type has identical interfaces, features or operational behavior. Those details depend on the specific service and configuration.

What Event Broker does

Event Broker is VAST’s native real-time event-streaming engine, integrated with VAST DataEngine. Its purpose is to let applications publish and consume events, query topics, run analytics and trigger AI or other event-driven workflows within the VAST environment. VAST presents this as a way to avoid maintaining a separate Kafka cluster for those workloads.

Jeff Denworth, VAST Data co-founder, described the launch as “a fundamental shift in the market for real-time data processing.” That is the company’s characterization of the product, not an independent assessment.

Is VAST Event Broker compatible with Kafka?

It is compatible with parts of Kafka’s API, but the documented feature set is not full Kafka equivalence. VAST’s Knowledge Base lists producer and consumer APIs, consumer groups, topic queries through the database, selected administrative operations, topic compaction and SSL. It also documents exclusions and limits that can affect whether an existing Kafka application or operating model will work unchanged.

Capability or limit What VAST documents
Producer and consumer APIs Supported
Consumer groups Supported, with some consumer-group features limited or unsupported
Topic queries Supported through database queries
Administrative operations Selected admin APIs supported
Topic compaction and SSL Supported
Transactions and automatic topic creation Unsupported
Idempotent producing and some Kafka client behaviors Unsupported or limited
Message size Up to 1 MB
Partitions Up to 20,000 per topic and 200,000 per Event Broker view

These capabilities and limits are from VAST’s documentation; they should be checked against the specific client libraries, features and workloads an organization uses. API compatibility alone does not guarantee that a Kafka application can be moved without changes.

How Event Broker differs from using a separate Kafka cluster

The central distinction is architectural. VAST positions Event Broker as part of its data platform, alongside storage, database and compute services. That may reduce the need for a separate streaming cluster when the required event workloads fit VAST’s supported feature set and deployment model.

It is not enough information to conclude that VAST can replace every Apache Kafka deployment. A decision should account for required Kafka APIs and client behavior, throughput and latency under the same workload conditions, security and observability requirements, operational responsibilities, integration needs and procurement costs. The available performance claims do not establish a general result across those variables.

What VAST says about performance

At launch, VAST claimed more than 10 times Kafka’s performance on like-for-like hardware and throughput above 500 million messages per second across its largest cluster deployments. A VAST white-paper benchmark separately reported six times higher message throughput per broker than Apache Kafka on identical hardware. These are vendor-reported figures; they should not be treated as independently validated or generalized beyond the hardware, test methodology and conditions used for each claim.

What configuration requires

Event Broker is configured on a VAST cluster rather than deployed as an independent consumer product. VAST’s setup documentation calls for a virtual IP pool with protocol roles, a user with the required S3 permissions, and a view with the Kafka protocol enabled.

  • Enabling Kafka on the view also enables the S3 Bucket and Database protocols for that view.
  • Only one virtual IP pool can be associated with a Kafka-enabled view.

Those dependencies matter when planning network access, identity permissions and the view’s other protocol use. The documented setup is infrastructure administration, not simply creating a Kafka endpoint in an application console.

When to evaluate Event Broker

Event Broker is most directly relevant when an organization is already evaluating VAST for AI or analytics data workloads and wants streaming integrated with its storage and database environment. It may also merit evaluation where the Kafka API coverage matches application needs and the team wants to avoid operating another cluster.

For a migration or replacement decision, inventory the exact Kafka APIs and client features in use, then verify them against VAST’s documented support. Benchmark representative message sizes, partition counts, latency targets and failure scenarios on the intended infrastructure, and assess security, replication, observability and total operational cost. VAST’s launch announcement and vendor benchmark figures alone do not answer those deployment-specific questions.
