Bloodlines is the action-RPG choice, Swansong is built around investigation and social consequences, and Coteries of New York is a text-led political narrative. They share the Vampire: The Masquerade setting, but they are not three interchangeable chapters of one campaign. Pick the game whose format matches how you want to play.
The short answer: which game should you play?
Choose Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines if you want the most conventional role-playing game of the three: explore an urban setting, accept quests, develop a vampire character and make clan-influenced decisions. Choose Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong if you prefer investigation, conversations, evidence and choices that affect characters and the Boston Camarilla. Choose Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York if you want a reading-heavy story about faction politics, dialogue and atmosphere, with your clan changing the perspective on events.
There is no required story order established for these games. A newcomer can start with any of them. The practical order is preference-based rather than chronological: systems-first players should start with Bloodlines, consequence-and-investigation players with Swansong, and text-and-politics players with Coteries of New York.

What the three games have in common
All three adapt a modern-gothic vampire world in which supernatural societies operate behind ordinary human life. Clans, political factions, secrecy and the conflict between vampire identity and humanity are more important than a simple humans-versus-monsters plot.

The tabletop setting is described in the 2024 Vampire: The Masquerade rulebook preview as involving “alternative history, clan politics, and bloody feuds.” That background explains why the games repeatedly return to questions of allegiance, status, secrecy and personal control. The exact mechanics differ, however. A clan is not just a cosmetic team selection: it can affect abilities, social position, narrative viewpoint and the role-playing options available to you. Each game implements that idea differently, so a clan choice in one title should not be assumed to work like the same choice in another.
The shared setting also means that knowing a little about vampire society can make the political terminology easier to follow. It is not a prerequisite. Each game introduces its own characters and immediate conflict, and none of the cited descriptions establishes that one must be completed before another.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
What it is
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is a 2004 action role-playing game developed by Troika Games and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows. Of the three games here, it most closely follows the familiar action-RPG loop: move through an urban environment, investigate locations, complete quests and shape a vampire through role-playing choices.
Why players choose it
- Exploration: the game gives you reasons to leave the main path and investigate the city beyond a single linear mission route.
- Quests and builds: it is the strongest fit for players who expect character development, quest-solving and a more traditional RPG structure.
- Clan-driven role-playing: clan identity helps create different experiences and changes how you approach situations.
- Agency through role-play: the appeal is not only winning fights; it is deciding what kind of vampire you are and how you respond to the people and factions around you.
That combination makes Bloodlines the best entry point for someone asking for a “real RPG” in the conventional sense. It has the broadest emphasis on exploration, quests and a playable character identity rather than presenting its story primarily through reading and conversation screens.
What to expect from its format
Bloodlines is not simply a dialogue game with vampire artwork. Its structure asks you to move through spaces, pursue objectives and use your character’s capabilities while making role-playing decisions. The important qualification is that its strengths are systemic and exploratory, not a promise that every choice produces a completely separate storyline. Pick it for the feeling of inhabiting a vampire in an RPG world, not because it is the newest or most streamlined presentation of the setting.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong
What it is
Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is a narrative RPG released on May 19, 2022, with the cited United States PlayStation listing covering PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It follows three vampire protagonists inside the political world of the Boston Camarilla.
PlayStation’s official description summarizes its central promise in one sentence: “Every choice determines the fate of the three main characters and of the Boston Camarilla.” That is a useful way to understand the game’s priorities. The defining activity is not twitch combat. It is examining situations, talking to people, interpreting information and deciding how far to trust, pressure or protect them.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInvestigation and social interaction
The game explicitly emphasizes consequences in both investigation and social interactions. You are therefore evaluating more than whether an answer is factually correct. A conversation can change what a character reveals, while an investigative decision can affect what happens later. The three-protagonist structure also gives the setting multiple viewpoints rather than asking you to see Boston through one uniform vampire identity.
- Investigation: gather and interpret information instead of treating every scene as a combat arena.
- Social encounters: conversations are a primary way to advance the story and manage relationships.
- Consequences: decisions can alter the fate of the protagonists and the wider Boston Camarilla.
- Multiple protagonists: the three playable vampires provide distinct perspectives on the same political crisis.
Who should start with Swansong?
Start here if you enjoy detective fiction, dialogue-heavy role-playing and branching outcomes. It is the clearest choice for a player who wants decisions to be the central activity and who prefers examining motives and evidence to repeatedly fighting through levels. It is also a better match than Bloodlines if your main question is, “Which game makes investigation and social choices matter most?”
Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York
What it is
Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York released on December 11, 2019. Steam describes it as a single-player narrative experience set in the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition universe. Its central conflict is between the traditionalist Camarilla and the independent Anarchs, and your selected clan changes how you see the events.

- Essential supplement resource: Expand your Vampire 5th Edition chronicles with tactics, lore, and game mechanics that deepen your World of Darkness campaigns
The official Steam description states: “Depending on your choice of the Clan you will be able to see the events from a distinct perspective.” That distinction is the key to the game. Clan selection is a narrative lens: it influences the viewpoint from which you understand alliances, threats and political choices.

It is best described by its official label, a single-player narrative experience, rather than by forcing it into the systems-heavy RPG category. In practical terms, it is much closer to interactive fiction or a visual-novel-style reading experience than to an action game. You spend more time reading, choosing dialogue and following political developments than exploring a combat-focused 3D world.
That does not make it a lesser version of Bloodlines. It is designed around a different pleasure: watching a factional struggle develop, understanding the social vocabulary of the setting and replaying from another clan’s perspective. It is the strongest fit for readers who want atmosphere and political storytelling, and the weakest fit for anyone expecting extensive character builds, free-roaming quests or action-RPG combat.
The Camarilla–Anarch conflict
The conflict between the Camarilla and Anarchs gives Coteries of New York a clear political spine. The Camarilla represents traditionalist vampire authority in the game’s central struggle, while the Anarchs stand for an independent alternative. The important point for a new player is not to memorize every faction detail before starting; it is to recognize that your choices are interpreted through competing ideas about who should hold power and how vampire society should be organized.
Bloodlines, Swansong and Coteries compared
| Axis | Bloodlines | Swansong | Coteries of New York |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core format | Action RPG | Narrative RPG | Text-led narrative experience |
| Main appeal | Exploration, quests and clan-driven role-playing | Investigation, social interaction and consequences | Political storytelling, dialogue and atmosphere |
| Primary setting emphasis | Vampire society and urban exploration | The Boston Camarilla | New York and the Camarilla–Anarch conflict |
| Player perspective | Role-play a customizable vampire identity | Follow three vampire protagonists | See events through a clan-dependent narrative perspective |
| Best for | Players wanting classic RPG systems | Players wanting investigative branching drama | Players wanting reading-heavy political fiction |
| Newcomer strength | Strongest systems-first entry point | Strongest consequence-and-investigation entry point | Strongest text-and-faction entry point |
Which game has the most choices?
There is no fair single winner because “more choices” can mean different things. Bloodlines gives you the broadest role-playing space: exploration, quests, clan identity and decisions made while inhabiting a customizable vampire. Swansong makes choices most visibly consequential within investigation and social encounters, with outcomes affecting the three protagonists and the Boston Camarilla. Coteries of New York makes perspective and political alignment the center of choice, especially through clan selection and the Camarilla–Anarch struggle.

If you want the most ways to approach an RPG situation, choose Bloodlines. If you want decisions to reshape a mystery and its characters, choose Swansong. If you want to reconsider the same world through a different political or clan viewpoint, choose Coteries. These are different forms of agency, so claiming that one has objectively more choices would obscure what each game is trying to do.
Do you need to play Bloodlines before Swansong?
No. The available descriptions do not establish a required story order, and the games focus on different protagonists, cities and structures. Bloodlines is associated with urban exploration and classic RPG systems; Swansong centers on three vampires and the Boston Camarilla; Coteries of New York presents a New York political conflict. Shared terminology may become more familiar if you play more than one, but prior completion is not presented as a condition for understanding the next title.
For a first-time player, choose by format rather than release date. Release dates are useful context—2004 for Bloodlines, December 11, 2019 for Coteries and May 19, 2022 for Swansong—but they do not form a stated narrative sequence.
A decision guide for newcomers
Choose Bloodlines when you want to…
- Explore an urban vampire setting outside a strictly linear path.
- Take quests and develop a character in a conventional RPG structure.
- See how clan identity changes role-playing opportunities.
- Combine narrative decisions with movement, objectives and game systems.
Choose Swansong when you want to…
- Investigate situations and interpret evidence.
- Spend most of your time in consequential conversations and social encounters.
- Follow three vampire protagonists rather than one player-defined identity.
- See decisions affect individual characters and the Boston Camarilla.
Choose Coteries of New York when you want to…
- Read a dialogue-heavy, politically focused story.
- Explore the Camarilla–Anarch conflict in New York.
- Use clan choice to change your perspective on events.
- Play something closer to interactive fiction than an action RPG.
What clan choice means across the games
“Clan” carries setting meaning in all three titles, but it should not be treated as a universal character-class screen. In Bloodlines, clan identity is tied to abilities, role-playing possibilities and the way you approach quests. In Swansong, the defining structure is three established vampire protagonists, so its perspective is not identical to choosing one custom character and building that identity from scratch. In Coteries, the selected clan explicitly changes your perspective on the events.
This difference matters when comparing screenshots, reviews or recommendations. A player seeking mechanical build variety should look first to Bloodlines. A player seeking several authored viewpoints should look to Swansong. A player seeking replayable political interpretation should look to Coteries. The shared vocabulary does not imply shared implementation.

The tabletop rulebook as a companion
These video games adapt a tabletop role-playing world. The Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition tabletop rulebook is the most directly relevant companion for readers who want to understand the clans, political structures and role-playing framework behind the games. Its setting preview connects the world to alternative history, clan politics and bloody feuds, the same broad ideas that appear in different forms across the three digital titles.
Use the rulebook when you want the source framework rather than another video-game campaign: it can clarify the setting’s vocabulary and give context for why clan identity and factional allegiance matter. You do not need it to start any of the games, and the games should still be judged on their own formats.
The verdict
Bloodlines is the action-RPG classic and the safest recommendation for a player who wants exploration, quests and role-playing systems. Swansong is the investigation-and-consequence narrative RPG, built around social encounters, three protagonists and the fate of the Boston Camarilla. Coteries of New York is the text-heavy political experience, with clan choice shaping your view of a Camarilla–Anarch struggle.
